I can't say enough good things about my bridal makeup experience with Steph!! From the start, she was professional and super easy to get in touch with - while being warm and friendly at the same time. From our first phone call through our demo and all the way through my wedding day, Steph made my mom, my bridesmaids and I so happy and comfortable! She really knows her stuff and wasn't phased at all when my MoH started with a half-up/half-down look but came back two hours later and asked for a full updo. I knew whoever I hired for to do my bridal hair and makeup would be spending a considerable amount of time in a big house with my crazy family running in and out, so it was really important to me that the person I chose could roll with the punches and help me stay relaxed in the midst of the chaos....Steph was definitely the best woman for the job. I'm still getting compliments a week later on how beautiful and natural our makeup looked, and I can't stop looking at photos of my updo and wondering how it's all my own hair. There about a million reasons why I wish I could go back and relive the day, but one of the biggest is because I wish I could get pampered and beautified by Steph all over again. She is THE BEST!

I hired Tatiana to do my makeup for my bridal shower. She was on time (at 7am!), confirmed the day before (since I forgot), texted with me, and most importantly, she did a great job! She happily dealt with my huge crazy dog and a house full of loud visiting family members. She did exactly what I asked of her and even made a change at the end when I decided I wanted to go darker on the eyes ☺️ the makeup lasted all day and looked wonderful! I would definitely recommend her 👍🏼⭐️

I had an amazing time with mylissa. She def knows how to bring out the beauty in you not only with her makeup skills but with her ease and excitement. I never paid much attention to my cheek bones until she said she couldn't wait to get her hands on them. It made me laugh and feel good about myself. Wonderful experience. Will go back for my wedding makeup as well!

Grace did my makeup for my wedding. Not wanting to feel over done, but hide my hyper pigmentation was a concern for me. She was at the venue right on time and was fun to spend time with while she did our makeup. When she was finished I was so pleased with the outcome. Fully covered but not too heavy and really stunningly done. Thank you so much for your help on one of my biggest days.

Morgan & Destiny were amazing! They arrived right on time, got all the girls and myself done quickly and did a wonderful job. The best part was I wanted some of my hair down for photos and my ceremony, but all of my hair up for the reception (so it would be out of my way to party and have a good time!) and they made arrangements to remain in the area, return after the ceremony and put my hair into an up-do plus do touch-up's on any of the girls in the bridal party who needed them! They were both total sweethearts, professional and organized (even after we switched up the schedule on them, they didn't miss a beat!). I would use them or recommend them anytime!

Ashley did the makeup for my entire wedding party on 6/23/18. Being a person that never wears makeup, and has no clue about any of it, I felt very comfortable with Ashley. She was so kind, funny, and helpful. We received many compliments on our makeup from guests at the wedding. I would 100% hire her again for any future makeup needs.

I have worked with Beth Mazza a few times and have enjoyed the time together, and have been more then pleased with the outcome each time. Her artistry is excellent, and she is willing to listen to what you want. Beth has a great personality which makes what can be a stressful time go smoothly and seamlessly. I highly recommend Beth Mazza as a makeup artist at any event you might have, wedding, night out, prom, bridal shower and more!!

Iris recently did my makeup for my wedding, as well as my bridesmaids. The entire process - from the pre-wedding hiring phase, to getting ready the day of - was a breeze thanks to Iris! She was so responsive to my millions of questions on thumbtack, quick to answer, and so sweet with reassuring me! The photos of her work speak for themselves; Iris is extremely talented. I wanted a more natural makeup look for my wedding, and she made sure to ensure my makeup wasn't caked on and heavy. She showed up on time, was a pleasure to talk to while she was doing my makeup, was quick (my entire bridal makeup took barely over a half hour!), and not overpriced like most of the other quotes I had received. Best of all, my makeup lasted the ENTIRE day without budging (through outdoor photos and ceremony, dinner, the reception - with a lot of dancing, and an afterparty). I even fell asleep in my makeup, and while my hair was a mess, my makeup still looked presentable! I truly cannot recommend Iris enough, and I hope to work with her again in the future!

My daughter hired Jess to do hair and makeup for her wedding. She did my hair in a braided up-do in a matter of minutes! It was a style that she recommended for me that I was very comfortable with. I applied half my makeup and then she finished the rest in a matter of a few minutes and made me look gorgeous. She then proceeded to do 4 other girls hair and makeup. My daughter looked stunning! I highly recommend her.

I worked with Nicole on two separate occasions for special events- my wedding and my best friends’ wedding. Nicole did IMPECABLE makeup for myself and my bridal party (October 2015) as well as the bride and the bridal party for my friends’ wedding (February 2017). She worked alone and made the best use of her time to focus on what each individual wanted, as well as talked to us in details about how to tie our individual looks together for cohesive photos. She was kind enough to do a “trial run” of my makeup a few weeks before my wedding. I’m not a huge makeup person, but Nicole was so patient and accommodating to be sure I looked EXACTLY how I wanted to on my big day. She made recommendations about what would look nice and not TOO extreme. Her makeup brands are high quality, the brushes and other materials were clean and/or new, and she left me feeling so confident, beautiful, and sexy on my big day! I would use Nicole’s services in the future and have referred her to numerous friends of mine for their special events as well. You will not be disappointed using Nicole!!!

I went to Amani Aulaqi to do my makeup for a wedding. Her work was outstanding! Even tho I showed up a little late she still took me in and made me look so beautiful. I came to her with a specific look I had in mind and let me just say, I was way beyond happy with the results. She's just an amazing artist and she makes the experience really joyful. She's very kind and even after the wedding my makeup still looked fabulous to the point that I didn't want to wash my face. Thank you Amani for your amazing work.

"Liz is simply fantastic. She did my bridal makeup in October, 2011--and I was literally a blank slate for her to work with because I have a hair loss disorder and do not have any eyelashes or eyebrows. I wanted a classic bridal look, but was nervous that because of my hair loss, I would never be able to look or feel like a "real bride." Liz chose makeup shades that brought out my best features and made me look absolutely fantastic--and still like myself. The day of my demo, my now-wife and friends kept getting distracted and would gaze at me and gush about how natural and gorgeous my makeup was. One of my friends has worked with several professional makeup artists, and she kept remarking on the quality of Liz's artistry! I had a "I'm movie-star" giddiness about me all day and did not want to wash it off that evening. On the day of the wedding, Liz was phenomenal. I felt very much like a real bride! Liz was punctual, kind, mellow, and professional--she calmed my bridal jitters and worked very well in the hectic pre-ceremony moments complete with photographer, bridesmaids, and last minute snafus. Liz Washer is supremely talented! I was really nervous about my eyelashes and eyebrows looking natural and not sliding off my face since there were no real hair for them to stick to...Et Voila! My lashes and brows looked entirely natural, really set off my eyes, and held up all night! And...I never felt weighted down by makeup or like there were pesky caterpillars on my lids. Considerate and thoughtful, Liz even gave me a touch-up goodie bag. I never needed it because my makeup, including the false lashes, held up all night through tears, laughter, and lots of dancing! I highly recommend Liz. You will not be sorry!

I highly recommend Michelle for your next event. Her prices are also great!

We chose Jennifer as the makeup artist for the bridal party for my daughter's wedding and she was fabulous. She arrived to the venue early, was very professional and was very attentive to the needs of myself, mother of the bride all the way through to the junior bridesmaid. Luckily she stayed until we were leaving for the church because she stepped right in to fix my wrist corsage that came apart. Jennifer made sure we all looked perfect and arrived to the church on time. Thank you Jennifer!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

        • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
        • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
        • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
        • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
        • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

        • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
        • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
        • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
        • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
        • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
