I purchased my German Shepherd from Robin last fall and he has honestly been such an amazing dog (not to mention gorgeous coat). She worked with him prior to me picking him up and he was virtually house broken already and only had a couple accidents in the house (less than 5). She had also worked with me one on one with training both Moose and myself how to respond to certain issues and how to train his commands. I definitely recommend Robin for her dog training skills and think she does a wonder job and is very experienced especially with GS dogs.

Adrienne offers cost effective at home training that we found extremely helpful. We have one year old litter mates and the individual attention in their home environment as well as lessons customized to our specific needs was much more beneficial than previous group classes. We were very comfortable with Adrienne's training philosophy and methods and would highly recommend her.

I first spoke with Niamh on the phone and she was very generous with her time. She listened to my concerns regarding my new pooch (Charlie) and then offered to come to my home to assess my dog, get to know him (and me.) Niamh was very punctual and as kind in person as she was on the phone. She was very honest and I felt very safe with her in my home. From the minute Niamh arrived she was very professional and very knowledgeable. Niamh took the time we needed. I did not feel rushed or pressured. She went above and beyond and really took her time to listen to my concerns, assess what I needed and what Charlie needed. Her thoughts, assessments and recommendations were all right on pointe. I was feeling bad about how overwhelmed I was and nervous that perhaps Charlie was not a good fit for me and Niamh showed much compassion and understanding. Niamh made it 100% acceptable that I was feeling the way I was and based on her assessment of Charile, gave me hope that in no time and with a little training, Charile was going to feel more confident, less "skiddish" and would be able to be left alone without any acting out or anxiety attacks. She also reassured me that in no time I would find that Charlie was going to be my best buddy. I did everything Niamh suggested and gained my own confidence in the process. She gave me great tips to working with Charlie on some basics and he showed a lot of success in a very short time. I am happy to say Niamh was right! Charlie is a love and we are having so much fun together. He is gaining confidence everyday, he can now be left alone and he is approaching a lot of new situations with less fear. I will follow up with Niamh but I have also taken her suggestion and got Charlie enrolled in school so he can show off how smart and funny he is, enjoy the company of other dogs and most of all, have fun while gaining the confidence he needs to live a long and happy life. Niamh is Quality human being with quality knowledge and skills! I recommend her 100%! Carrie, Shelton, CT

My 9 month old Husky has been a crazy, ball of energy since I got him and he had absolutely no listening skills. Koda has been trained by Kelly since he was 4 months old and he has improved drastically! He used to be so crazy that I even thought I may have to get rid of him because he was too much for my grandpa to handle and now I couldn't picture my life without him! He is much easier to handle and I have Kelly to thank for that! Now I am going to keep enstilling the lessons Kelly taught me for Koda and prepare him for his next step which is when he turns 1 he will do his last training class and take the service dog exam. I wouldn't of ever thought Koda would come this far.

Christine was very professional, focused and truly understood how to explain dog training and techniques as well as what makes the pup tick and how to correct behaviors. She pays close attention to our dogs and offered constructive steps to assist all along the process. Was very happy and would love to use Christine again - my pups truly enjoyed the training process and would crash that evening after our sessions. Wish her all the luck in the world - you and your pup will be a better team after working with Christine.

Debbie is absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend working with her. We rescued a puppy who has a ton of energy and has some habits which can really test our patience. Debbie helped us to have hope and confidence in ourselves and showed us that we can help our dog be her best! It’s evident that Debbie loves what she does and she immediately had a calming effect on our dog. By implementing the strategies that Debbie provided, we’ve noticed a big difference in our dog- even after just one training session! Training a puppy requires a lot of patience and it’s easy to become a bit defeated or feel like it’s never going to work. Debbie is extremely supportive and knowledgeable and will show you that it is possible.

Very highly experienced animal professional with a passion and love for all animals. She's fantastic with all dog breeds and is a genuinely accredited dog trainer. Her extensive and professional knowledge will have even the most difficult of dogs learning new commands and behavioral techniques in no time. You won't find a more qualified individual. Don't settle for cheap unprofessional training, Erica runs an official LLC. The wrong trainer can make your dogs behavioral issues worse. Erica's the best, 5 star trainer.

My husband and I live in an apartment and needed our new puppy to be able to live in an apartment life style. We researched on the Websites for a training centre who would be able to assist us in training our puppy to adjust to his new surroundings. We certainly made the right choice when choosing K9 National Services, we are extremely happy with the results and our puppy. We have found Nikhil to be a very professional and caring person in the way he handles his business and clients. Nik you are amazing, thank you for all the loving hard work you do....

Amazing!! I couldn't be happier with the training my two shepherds recieved. They are wonderful off leash, I can bring them anywhere! I get compliments on how well they are trained all the time. If you want high quality training of your dog you've found the perfect place. I would and will take all my future dogs here. Titan (17 months when trained) and Layla (7 months when trained) are still well behaved and listen. Yet act like dogs, they still have their own personalities, that was no broken from them in training as some other trainers have done.

I highly recommend Doug if you need ANY type of dog training. I rescued my 75lb young pitbull last August and went through 2 trainers before I started with Doug. This dog used to drag me around on walks, had no manners, wanted to eat my cats, and has a very high energy level. We did 5 lessons with Doug and Chelsea and my dog has changed more in the last 6 weeks than he has since I rescued him a year ago! Today I took him to the food truck festival in Hartford and he stayed right by my side, and didn’t even jump on the people who stopped to pet him. Also this evening we tried a little off leash on our walk and he stayed very close. I never thought I would be able to walk him without him pulling me or control him around my cats thanks to Doug and Chelsea I can take my dog anywhere and not worry about being that person who can’t control their dog!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
