From the beginning robin was fantastic, the first interaction was a free consultation where she met us at our home to go over the in's and out of how to puppy proof the house, and all be on the same level to training mind set within the family. Robin knows her stuff, she offered books to read and was available at all time for any questions. She was consistently on time and her passion for dogs is very strong. Having several dogs of her own she treats your dog in a very humane kind and loving manner to help develop a relationship of dog and owner as well as a companion! The training was very easy to pick up, without any confusion. After each training session she would issue a guideline of great detail how to continue the training we learned for that day. Our puppy had a bad resource guarding issue. Robin took the time to bring him into her home for several days to work on this issue without any added fees. I have recommended diamonds in the ruff to several other dog owners both at the park and or out for a stroll at the beach. Our experience with robin has been a great one hands down!

Snaggle Foot came twice daily to care for our two cats and our lizard while we were away on our honeymoon. This was a gift from the groom's mother, who had done a lot research into pet sitters in the New Haven area and found Snaggle Foot to have the best combination of flexible service and competitive rates. From the beginning, everything was very professional; Judy S visited our home and gave an overview of the service and inquired about other things we might possibly need (mail, plants, etc). She also asked about our pets' special needs (none in our case) and became familiar with the location of food, litter, treats, toys, etc. The service we received was fantastic -- we received updates daily/every other day (sometimes with photos) and never had any doubt that our pets were in the best of hands. When we returned home, the litter box was sparkling clean, and our cats didn't have that typical starved-for-attention-for-days attitude that they give us when we're only gone overnight. I would highly recommend Snaggle Foot for your pet care needs!

Jenn is the only game in town if you need care for your pet. We tried a few pet care services but when Jenn took over there was no one else for our dog, Cooper. The thing that sets Jenn apart from others is that hers is not just a service. Jenn's love and concern for animals is genuine and evident in the care that she gives them. That's why we've had her care for our dog for over 10 years! We highly recommend Jenn's Pet Care.

Joyce is fantastic!! My husband and I had a three-month old wheaten terrier puppy when we hired Joyce. We were looking for help with potty training, basic obedience, leashing walking and helping our little guy become a part of our family. We cannot say enough positive things about what Joyce and her training methods have done for us. Our puppy was at ease immediately with Joyce and loves his training sessions. He has come leaps and bounds in his training using her easy to follow methods and improves after every session. After a few short months, he follows commands, is almost house broken and actually listens to us now! Joyce is professional, flexible with scheduling, kind, and very affectionate with our puppy. It's obvious how much she is a natural with animals. We also use Joyce for boarding when traveling. We are confident that our puppy is in safe, capable and loving hands when he spends time at Joyce's house with her (and Corcega!). She'll even send photos, videos and multiple daily calls and texts with updates for you, the individual service she provides for your pup is so much better than doggie daycare. If you are looking for a dog trainer, dog walker or a happy place for your dog when you're away on vacation, we highly recommend Joyce and her services to any dog owner.

I left my cats worried, but Michele so relieved that. Took such good care, gave me updates, went above and beyond to make sure they were ok! I was so impressed by her, her caring loving heart for our "kids". I would so so keep her as our permanent pet sitter. A joy being able to leave and finally not worrying. She is awesome!!!! Blessed we found her!

Wolf is so good with our little Emma. She has been caring for her since she was 9 weeks old and everytime I get to see them together, the mutual affection they share is so apparent. Wolf is also so dependable and trustworthy. When she says "I don't know any other way to be"...I believe her. I highly recommend that if you are looking for an outstanding pet sitter...you don't need to look any further.

Lesley has been a perfect fit for our family. My sister was needing some fairly long term pet care and Lesley is amazing . She immediately took to the 3 cats and they to her. She sends photos at every visit which is so comforting. I love the online portal where you can view what's happening at each visit. Highly recommend this service.

I have two cats. One is a cranky territorial male who can be hostile to strangers. I have had several cat sitters who were intimated by him and needed to have a water gun handy to deal with him. But Kim, who has worked with feral cats, knew just how to handle him. Her calm demeanor (and treats) went a long way to forge a trust that allowed her to come into the house and take care of both my cats. I would definitely hire her again!

Lenny and Mary Ellen are the best of the best. One of my rescue dogs I adopted was abused and had severe separation anxiety. When talking to people about what was happening with the separation anxiety (totally destroying the house) I was told by most people to put him down. I refused and made it my mission to save this beautiful boy. I remember being so impressed with Lenny from 10 years previous at puppy kindergarten and I contacted him and his wife Mary Ellen put a program together for me to work with my beloved Buddy. Within a short time, by following the program Mary Ellen set up with me - Buddy overcame his issues and turned out to be one of the best dogs I ever owned. Also - Mary Ellen's grooming and pet sitting service is exceptional. I wouldn't trust my dogs to anyone else but Lenny and Mary Ellen especially due to their exceptional years of experience. As their motto goes - The Dog Comes First - that is the case with Canine Cadre!

I would recommend The Elegant Pup as the best pet sitter you will ever have the pleasure of hiring!!! From the moment I spoke to the owner Merci Alese and then went to visit her establishment, to see if it was a suitable environment for my precious 12 year old kitty, I was more than impressed. She only sits for one pet at a time and your pet has their own spacious apt with all manner of comforts. I left my cat with Merci for a week with no worries, because from the moment I dropped her off she was immediately at ease since she was not being placed in a cage. Instead she had the run of this lovely space where she could roam and explore at will and where we brought all of her favorite things so that when we picked her up she was as happy as ever. She even looked like she might have gained a bit as a direct result of Merci's excellent care and attention to our kitty's needs. I will never leave my kitty with anyone else but The Elegant Pup and I recommend that everyone who needs a trusted pet sitter call Merci !!

It is very hard to find someone that is trustworthy, dependable and responsible. Lisa definently has all of these qualities and more! We will be using her for all of our future dog sitting and house sitting needs. Thanks again Lisa, A.C.

Tara watched our cat while we were out of town and also checked on our mail. She was reliable and professional and I would recommend her to other pet owners. My cat is 17 lb and sometimes a grump, but he felt comfortable with Tara and I loved getting her text updates and pictures on how he was doing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
