Irv and his crew were great to work with. They did a complete redo of our bathroom, demo, new pipes, new electric, new fixtures, wall and floor tiling with beautiful results. Irv gave good advice on design and fixtures, and he was efficient with both time and cost.

Bharti offers amazing guidance and advice to help me with window treatments to bring a room together, floor plans for furniture placement, and furniture and accessory purchases throughout my home. What I love most about her is that she has a flexible attitude (as I change my mind often) and really listens to me and is able to translate the information I give her into the best solutions for me and my family in our home. Bharti was recommended to me by my friend and neighbor and I would highly recommend her to any of my friends, or anyone at all, looking for an interior designer. I love working with her!

Clarice Cutler Interior did a fantastic job with the interior of the new office space for the New England branch of a national engineering company. From the initial engagement and scoping meeting, setting the schedule for our project, to the final design and construction, Clarice and her team were responsive and professional throughout. The design itself was just what we were looking for and all our staff were happy with the color scheme, furniture and artwork selections.

We hired Henrick to help us with design challenges in our kitchen/bathroom/dining area. Along with a master bath and basement. His ideas were creative, beautiful, and well thought out. We were able to rely on his plan to complete our work --which is still in progress. I highly recommend

When we first thought of adding a Master Bedroom En suite, we enlisted the help of a designer. Then we found Alain who made us realize that the first design would have been all wrong and much more costly. Alain's design and thoughtful attention to detail gave us a beautiful room that we enjoy more everyday!

Our experience with Caryn Paradis was excellent from start to finish. We had an unfinished basement that we wanted to finish and didn't know where to begin. Caryn talked with us in detail about how we wanted to use our basement and then came up with plans that included all of our needs as well as ideas that we hadn't even considered but should have. She was able to design a space that incorporated areas for everyone in our family, including our young son--even a stage that could be pulled apart for use as couches when he becomes a teenager! Because we live in separate states, Caryn was able to do much of the work remotely with minimal visits to our home to take measurements, etc. She had finish samples sent directly to us quickly and walked us through the decision making process. She designed specific requests, such as a fireplace for my husband and a guest room/office area. Caryn paid attention not only to the aesthetics of the job, but also the practicalities, such as outlet placement and HVAC. She also included amenities such as a well-placed dorm fridge which will come in handy when our son is old enough to use the space as a hang-out with friends. All in all, the job was smooth, well-designed and surprisingly painless. Caryn listened to our needs and then exceeded them. We would recommend her without reservation.

Laurene McGarry-Bissell, principal of Eclectic Design Inc., helped me change the personality of my home from cool and monochrome to warm and colorful. She has an intuitive sense of what a home owner or business owner would feel comfortable with in terms of layout, color, artwork, furniture, and window coverings. With Laurene's help, I was able to bring out parts of my design "personality" that I had been too reserved to express. Laurene has a wide network of resources for materials and furnishings, which made the selection process fun and easy for me. She is a pleasure to work with, always professional, and follows through on everything she promises. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Eclectic Design Inc. to my friends--in fact, I have done so many times.

We recently converted several rooms of our home into a Master Suite. Whitney, from The Dahl House, helped me pick out shower and wall tiles, paint colors, window dressing fabrics and provided over all feedback on furniture positioning and room layout. I already had furniture and had picked up some of the decor online and at sales. But the beautiful end result, would not have been accomplished without Whitney's eye for color and design to pull it all together. She professionally worked with what I had and built on it seamlessly while taking into consideration my underdeveloped vision. Whitney even accompanied me shopping for window dressing fabric and gave me advice on how to sew them myself, when my budget was running low. Each day I now wake up in a space that is finished, beautiful and perfect - thanks to Whitney!

I'm so happy I decided to have Interiors by Yanni furnish and decorate my home. Yanni was a pleasure to work with, she is extremely knowledgeable and has a great eye for color, textures, and design . My husband and I have very different taste when it comes to decorating. Yanni was able to work with us to find things that we would both like ensuring we felt comfortable and confident in the decisions we were making. My husband and I are so pleased with the outcome. Our home which was once was very bare, now is filled with color, accessories, and beautiful furniture thanks to Yanni. I would definitely reccomend Interiors by Yanni to Family, Friends, and anyone wanting to bring a new look to their home.

Trish did a complete gut renovation of our duplex - kitchen, 2 1/2 baths, new fireplace, living room, bedrooms, office and foyer. As a non-designer person it is difficult to envision possiblities but Trish helped us along and we surrendered some ideas we "thought" we wanted- Thank God she keep helping us evolve! The project exceeded our expectations, resulting in Awards and a magazine cover spread! And most of all We loved it - beautiful, elegant, social and comfortable. The details were stunning- Swarovski Chrystal pendants, surprising stairway floor lighting, custom marble fireplace, glass beaded wallpaper, beautiful fabrics to a yin and yang philosophy inspired kitchen/living room. She's gifted- you can't go wrong if you want beautiful home.

We hired Preston to re-design a few rooms in our home and. we were beyond happy! As busy parents, he made us his priority and let us be involved as much or as little as my husband and I wanted! We had a great time with him and the "wow" we get from friends and family was so worth it! Thanks again, Preston! - Mark and Jen

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

          • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
          • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
          • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
          • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

          • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
          • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
          • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
          • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Older non-renovated apartment in Brooklyn. Despite the non-renovated aspect of the apartment - I'd like it to be beautiful and presentable. Since my budget is lower - I'd prefer the interior designer to select low cost options that maximize floor space (I have a big dog). A Swedish aesthetic is highly desired. I do love the way Ikea model rooms look (I admit it) and my dog is all white so I prefer large pieces of white furniture with smaller pieces of accent colors.
