Mr. Salvati- Quick to resolve all HVAC issues, honest, straightforward, naturally handy, and helpful. HVAC companies we previously contacted before Guy were intent on selling us an entirely new and expensive system, which was unnecessary. Guy Salvati, whom we found through Thumbtack, fixed our system thoroughly, without any overwhelming expenses. Everything works great now, and we have peace of mind and no pieces missing from our pockets :) Thank you Guy! We highly recommend you.

Kevin was excellent to work with - a total pro. Our A/C system was installed by another contractor but the wiring was a total mess and the system stopped working. Kevin was able to find the problem and fix the system so it is running wonderfully. Fantastic work, completely fair pricing and great person. We will be using K & L and Kevin for our regular Heat, hot water and A/C maintenance and any repairs needed. Kevin is coming out to do an annual tune up on the heating system and hot water boiler next week. Highly recommend. Thank you Kevin.

We had the pleasure of working with Mark Troiano from CJT Development to build our custom new house. He is everything you would want in your contractor. He made great suggestions and helped keep us stay within our budget. When we met with him to go over out blueprints he came back with ways we could save money and not lose the integrity of our dream home. He did an amazing job sticking to the time table that we discussed previous to starting our build. Mark does an amazing job of explaining the process of everything and stayed in constant contact with us throughout the entire project. He was always available to answer our questions whether it be in person, on the phone, text or email. Mark was always willing to help out where ever it was needed. He is hard working and honest and works with quality subcontractors. Our house came out beautiful and the quality is amazing. I would highly recommend Mark to do any project, and would hire him again in the Here is a link to our home on Houzz http://www.houzz.com/projects/1482269

In December of 2011, I purchased a dim, run-down townhouse suffering from a bad case of shag carpeting, “band-aid” carpentry and nearly 30 years of neglect. To call it a "fixer-upper" would be an understatement--rather I had to completely gut it and start over from scratch. I hired Tom Mucherino to take care of the remodeling and bring it back to life, and I couldn’t be happier with the work. Tom is very easy to work with--he shows up when he says he will, stays in good communication, and was always very helpful and informative when it came to making decisions. Among other things, he handled all the demolition, completely re-did my kitchen and bathroom, replaced all of the damaged drywall in the house, sanded and refinished the upstairs floors, and installed new floors on the other two levels. Tom is a perfectionist, taking the time to make sure everything was done right, and his committment to his work shows; everything he did met or exceeded my expectations. He even put in a custom spice rack, and built me a new set of stairs to my upstairs loft!      Today, my house is absolutely gorgeous--I get compliments from everyone who visits about how light, bright, and airy and modern it is. I would recommend him without reservation to anyone needing a good contractor.

Atlantic Mechanical Services has replaced and repaired central heating and air conditioning units, hot water heaters, booster tanks, walk-in refrigerators and freezers, stand up freezers, toilets, sinks, etc. They have serviced 6 restaurants for me and I would never call anyone else. They are hands down the best commercial HVAC company around.

I have worked with AAA Plumbing LLC since 2009 as then-Chair of the Board of Trustees of First Ecclesiastical Society of East Haddam, Connecticut/First Church of Christ Congregational in East Haddam. At the time, we had AAA design and install a replacement system for an outdated steam system for the 1794 Meetinghouse. A design criteria is that it needed to be able to be shutdown completely, just like the steam system, as there is no water in the Meetinghouse part of the building. Two Unico System air handlers were added and connected to the newer boiler in the then 7-year old addition that had plenty of capacity to handle it. The solution was perfect and very quiet, although some missed the occasional clanging of the old steam pipes. I have since had service work performed on the Unico System air handler in my 1834 residence. Very pleased with all experiences and are my "go to" HVAC contractor.

I recently ran into a problem when a contractor did not show. I called Cuevas Handyman Services and Carlos called me first thing the next morning. I told him my needs and he was out the same day to provide me with a free quote. Carlos was hired and started work the next day. Carlos provided plaster work (walls and ceiling work) as well as ceiling texture and full room painting. Carlos was always on time and he actually listened to our needs. I will be calling Cuevas Handyman services again and would highly recommend the company for a job well done. Thank you Cuevas Handyman Service, our kitchen looks wonderful!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

        Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

        • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
        • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
        • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
        • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
          • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
        • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
          • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
        • Your home has humidity problems.
        • Your home has excessive dust.
          • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
        • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
          • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
        • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
          • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
