With 16 years of teaching experience, I manage my own private studio of around 30 students with a driving passion to make music more accessible to all. I was on faculty at the Fairfield | Trumbull School of Music for 3 years and previously on the Music and Arts staff before pursuing my own private business. During my years studying at the Juilliard School of Music, I’ve mentored and coached students in the Juilliard Pre-College program. I received Suzuki certification and training from the Hartt School and the School for Strings in NYC, further expanding my knowledge and skills in teaching children as young as 4 years old.
My teaching style uses elements from my previous Suzuki training, especially when working with young, novice students. Teaching adults and teens can be a little less structured, and more flexible because I cater to the needs of each individual student. I am able to teach students to learn any song by ear, so long as it is within their playing level. I am happy to cover music/songs that my students request because it's true that you play better when you love the piece you're working on! I am proficient in teaching both rigorous violin/viola technique and music theory.
I can go at whatever pace the student wishes; I can provide a low pressure, light-hearted environment. I can also create an environment that focuses on refining proper violin/viola technique. It seems counter intuitive that the latter would promote faster progress, considering the process can feel slow at times, but it definitely produces the best results with the least amount of frustration. I can guarantee that if you put in the work, I will dedicate my time and skills to you to the best of my ability and you will not feel stagnant in your learning process.
Part of what makes me unique as a teacher is my performance background, and the ability to give extensive professional advice and insight into the music world. As a performer, I was the Assistant Principal violist of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra for 6 years and played in the symphony’s viola section for a total of 9 years. I have the highest level of training in the country having received both my Master's and Bachelor's degrees at Juilliard, and have traveled to Florida, NYC, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Washington D.C., Colorado, and California to perform with professional ensembles. Some highlights from my career include performing with Yo-Yo Ma at the Kennedy Center Honors, performing a concert with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and playing at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Tanglewood, the New York Supreme Court building, and the United Nations Headquarters.
