I hired Jason for fixing my water heater and he did a great job with it (changed the heating elements and thermostats leaving the area clean). He did also help with a few questions I had about other improvements/maintenance to the house. He is professional, very courteous and was punctual to the time he promised on Thumbtack. Glad I chose him for the work. Highly recommended.

Guy did a great job. I thought my oil-burning furnace/boiler just needed a routine clean and tune-up, but Guy took the extra time to chisel out debris that was built up in the combustion chamber. He also gave me tons of advice on how to make my system safer and more efficient.

Cye helped me install 2 ecobee smart thermostats with an existing wire that was not hooked up. Additionally, the night before, I had some issues with my boiler for hydronic heat not getting pressure, and Cye was able to help me figure out why and fixed it. He took his time explaining everything as he goes and taught me my way around my heating system. Not only do I have 2 working smart thermostats now, I also feel a lot more confident around my heating system now.

My husband and I were very pleased with the service Andy provided! We called for an issue for our heating system thinking there was a major issue that was wrong and Andy came in the same day to assess the issue. He assured us it wasn't a major issue when others made us believe it was and resolved over heating system immediately. The results were great! His price was extremely reasonable and we were very happy in the end. I would definitely recommend him. He's very professional, knowledgeable and reasonable. Thanks again Andy, expect a call from us for any other issues we may have with our Hvac system in the future!

I live in a very unusual home It has very complicated commercial heating and AC system . In the 20 years I’ve lived there I’ve had a host of “specialists “ try to repair or address system problems . Rob was the first and only one who was able to pinpoint the problem , come up with an easy, affordable solution . He was professional, courteous, knowledgeable, unbelievably competent and an unequivocal gentleman who put pride over dollars . Out of the many recommendations that I’ve had over the years and especially from thumbtack, he’s a treasure and I’m grateful that I found him Thank you Thumbtack!

Obed is great. He fixed my furnace, it required a new pressure switch and compressor motor. He arrived as promised, very friendly, very professional. He explained everything to me and gave me tips on maintaining my furnace, namely cleaning the filters and exhaust. After he repaired my furnace it went out again. Turned out the tubes going to the pressure switch got clogged because I forgot to clean my filter. Obed came back and got my furnace working again. I am definitely going to save his information and call him should I ever need repair or replacement of my furnace or central air.

We had P&M Mechanical for a heating system service and were very satisfied: very professional, reliable, providing honest information (not trying to sell us a new heating system just because ours is old) and a good value.

Grover was fantastic! He arrived at my home to diagnose my steam furnace when it wasn't working. The issue was worse than we had thought, and he had to come back several times and go out to buy parts. Even after all of this additional work, he kept his word and only charged me his initial quote in addition to the parts he needed to buy. Grover is an extremely hard working, honest person, and 100% has his Customer's best interest at heart. I will definitely hire him again!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
