Milton Suqui of S & L Tree Service, and his colleague, Freddie, helped me remove a 60' tree, 18" diameter at the base, that had fallen into a tidal river adjacent to our property. The tree needed to come out immediately otherwise it would become a sieve catching winter blow down and other debris, and jeopardizing our little dock. Get all the estimates you want from, but do yourself a favor and give Milton the first chance to do an onsite "final" estimate. Not only did Milton give me the best price, but he and Freddie came with equipment, ready to go the day of the on-site survey, and immediately got to work. Remember, the tree was in the river, so there were some obstacles along the way, including submerged boulders which made the task more difficult, but our little team succeeded in accomplishing the goal. Using block and tackle, pulleys, ratchet straps, a pair of neoprene waders, and a couple of hearty chainsaws, the job was handled efficiently. All of the pieces of the stumps, and branches, and brush were piled neatly above the flood zone to create a new home for woodland creatures. If they can remove a large tree from a moving, tidal river, imagine what they can do for you on dry land. Highly recommend.

Gardening is a great joy to me, but I've been so busy with work my beloved backyard grew completely out of control. Joel and his team saved the day -- they weeded by hand, shaped overgrown bushes and trimmed trees, hauled all the garden waste away and left my place beautiful. Will definitely call him again!

Rocky came a gave me an estimate that I could not refuse and they came that weekend to cut down and remove two trees and three big limbs off another tree that was hanging over a street. When they arrived they got right down to business. One of the trees was at least 90 ft. tall and one of his crew climbed up and cut down the limbs and trunk like it was nothing. I was amazed as how fast and safely he was moving. They were very professional and when the work was done, they cleared up all the debris and you would had never known those trees were even there. They did an outstanding job and the price was reasonable. Rocky and his team are respectable and highly recommended. I would definitely hire GreenLeaf Landscape again for future projects.

Prune a 25 foot Magnolia tree, trim 3 birch trees and install 2 cables for support between trunks. I also had a Mulberry tree trimmed along with a branch from another tree in the back cut down. I also had several high branches from an evergreen cut. Aurelio gave me a fantastic price and came ready with all the necessary equipment and people to do the job. They did such a great job with everything especially the Magnolia. Aurelio and his crew really know what they are doing and I recommend them very highly.

Moises and his guys removed a dead birch tree, a dead spruce and trimmed a large spruce. The team obviously work together all the time; they were very organized and thorough. They offered to replant a few dislodged plants that were close to the birch tree. My neighbor actually asked Moises for some work that he was able to complete the same day. They spoke English and were friendly while being professional. They cleaned up "everything" before leaving. I would definitely recommend them.

Nathan and his crew was punctual and professional. During the job, Nathan face timed me to confirm the cutting of a branch and to allow me to see the progress of the job. Nathan came back the next day to prune two trees to my preference. CT Green was able to price match other competitors. I will definitely use them again for future work.

Alvaro and his 2 guys worked from 8am-6pm, taking down 6 trees from my property. All trees had to be climbed and roped, to avoid hitting my house, shed, trampoline and swing set and they did it flawlessly. Very hard working guys and very knowledgeable. I will be having them back to take down more. Thank you guys!!

I recently moved into a home with a yard with 20+ trees that had been sorely neglected. Upon asking for quotes on Thumbtack, David came by that day to provide an estimate for tree removal and trimming. His prices were reasonable and he was able to accommodate my schedule. They worked efficiently and did a good job of cleaning up. I would hire them again.

With a baby on the way a move in progress and no place for the dogs. Steve accomplished the feat of removing the large tree and trimming some large bushes so that we could keep or schedule on track. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
