I had a BIG powerwashing job: 2story home, white pvc fencing with moss and mold along with trex decking and belgian blue pavers on the front porch. The job was done with great attention to detail and care. The outcome is majestic: gleaming white soffits, pavers like new as well as sealed and sanded, decking fresh and house aglow! A FULL day of work for 2 guys that brought their equipment, set up, did the job and were courteous and gracious. I would recommend 100%. Now, I hired them for painting. An excellent value and easy electronic payment. These are the guys for any job! Even my neighbor came out and hired them too. You will be as impressed as I am. Stunning!!

Herson repaired a large chain link fence that required replacing 9 pole supports and suspension rod. He was quick to quote, begin, and finish the job. He did everything professionally and at a good price. I would recommend him to anyone.

They were able to turn an eye sore crumbling front porch into a majestic composite front porch. Rome has incredibly skilled people working for him and i thought that he was the most reasonably priced contractor.

Tony took the time to inspect our front porch steps, detail what needed to be replaced and what was still in good shape (saving us money), and chat with us about his business and what services he offers. He was friendly and professional - and he's dog-friendly! He replaced the rotted steps on our front porch and brought the old railings up to code, making sure they are very sturdy for my elderly mom who has two hip replacements and needs to be super careful. He did not contract this work out - he completed the entire project himself in one day. We promptly hired him again for another job.

Quito's Contractors were very nice to work with. He quickly identified the problem and was able to fix my roof within the week. It was leaking but after two rainstorms it has not leaked after he fixed the problem.

Carlos and his team were prompt, efficient and professional. They painted our wood siding and front and back porches, including a complicated Victorian gingerbread-style porch. They also repaired some rotted window sills and added missing trim. I appreciated Carlos' clear communication throughout the project, and attention to detail. And our house looks fantastic!

Hired Alby's Masonry for repair work in August 2017. They were very cordial, professional and hard working from beginning to end. Alby and company have impeccable attention to detail and a work ethic second to none. The final result was a beautiful patio and walkway. Alby's will be our go-to for future work!

KJ did a great job painting 3 rooms and a hallway in our house that we are getting ready to put on the market. His bid was very reasonable and he stuck to it and during the course of the work he identified a few small things to add on to the project that helped with the overall impact and it did not feel like he was trying to "sell more." His team was very diligent and professional -- we've worked with other painters in the past. And we look forward to having him do work on our new house soon.

I highly recommend Vivax for any home remodel or work project. Vitaliy has gone above and beyond on a recent home project which included total gut renovations of 2 bathrooms, rebuilding an enclosed screened in porch, painting and drainage/foundation remediation. His workers did a meticulous and great job by paying close attention to the details. His carpenters did a fantastic job rebuilding cabinetry and showed many years of experience and excellent craftsmanship. They were also very professional and reliable. My family and I are very pleased with their work product and are enjoying our 'new' bathrooms and porch. Jamal Davis

Replaced wooden steps to my front porch and painted the railings. I'm very satisfied with the end result. The workmen put in extra effort to replace hard to reach planks to make sure the surfaces were level and safe. The work was completed promptly at a reasonable cost.

I hired Bruce to strip/paint an awning over my back porch, paint the trim around the back door, and replace an outdoor lighting fixture. He’s great. Bruce is a really nice guy and easy to talk to. Scheduling and communication pre-project was a breeze. Pricing was excellent. He showed up early and took care of this project quickly, neatly, and the workmanship is top notch. I am more than happy with the final product. I will definitely hire Bruce Sewell of S&B Handyman Service again and I would highly recommend you do the same.

I hired Mike from Goodman Building Company last year for several projects including a kitchen remodel, converting my three seasoned porch into a larger living room and dining room, and remodeling my main bathroom. I found Mike’s company really pays attention to the small details and took pride in their work. I was very pleased with the workmanship this company provided and even more importantly I found their pricing fair. I have just again hired this company to come do some smaller jobs around the house including new exterior doors and new attic stairs.

I hired Agate & Co. to tear up, replace and stain my front porch floor. From start to finish, working with Jimmy of Agate & Co. was a great experience. Jimmy came to estimate the job and did the work himself, with one helper. His price was lower than competitors. He checked in along the way, answering questions and, when necessary, making slight revisions to the original plan. He definitely knew what he was doing and had good suggestions for how to do the job. He worked for three days, including very rainy days, to complete the job. Jimmy was exactly the guy I would have wanted someone to recommend to me.

I had a dirt pathway going from my porch to my driveway. During winter I would be slipping and sliding on icy water or mud to get to the car. Tim put down patio blocks all the way out from the porch and totally solved the problem and saved me from falling eventually. I also had uneven steps coming off porch and he shifted them so that the steps were safe. I found him to be polite, respectful, very willing to work in any way to solve the problem.

Chris was very professional and competent. He built two small porches in my backyard with pressure treated wood. Both came out better than I expected. I'm already using Chris for another job. I would recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
