I worked with Bharti for the design of my personal executive office space.  We agreed on a flat fee rate, which I found to be desirable so that I could include the fee in the budget and not be surprised at the end.  Bharti visited the space, received input on my ideas and tastes, and then created a visual plan with suggested colors, furniture placement, window treatments, etc.  Her initial plan was right on and she made recommendations that were consistent with what I liked, but also offered things that I had not thought of, which is what you hope for in using a designer.  Bharti also arranged for contractors to complete painting, etc. and was helpful in moving the project along.  She is delightful to work with, thorough, professional, and goes above and beyond in seeing the project to completion. When my wife saw the office, she couldn’t believe the transformation; it is very warm and inviting. We were so pleased with Bharti, we have asked her to design some rooms at our home as well. I enthusiastically recommend Bharti for your interior design needs!

Clarice Cutler Interior did a fantastic job with the interior of the new office space for the New England branch of a national engineering company. From the initial engagement and scoping meeting, setting the schedule for our project, to the final design and construction, Clarice and her team were responsive and professional throughout. The design itself was just what we were looking for and all our staff were happy with the color scheme, furniture and artwork selections.

Lynn, the interior designer for LMC Interiors NY, is a professional colleague with whom I've recently had the pleasure working. A very talented interior designer, Lynn has seamlessly and effortlessly incorporated one of my signature home decor candle designs into a current project on which she is working. The flawless juxtaposition of the warm wood cabinetry with the coolness and elegance of the tile work and countertop in the space she designed was impressive! Lynn clearly has a very good eye for detail, and I look forward to seeing more of her projects in the future!

Diana, worked with me in remodeling my bedroom with only a $1000 budget for a radio show! Miraculously, she made it all happen. Her advice, comments and direction for the project were simply invaluable. She is not only a gifted and a superb interior decorator, but a fabulous human being. Diana spend time asking about my needs and likes, and listened and addressed them all. She re-purposed old items and to my amazement made it all blend beautifully in the room the old with the new!! I recommend Diana highly to decorate your home and for any challenging decorating assignment! She is on top of her game- A TEN! Nicky

Our experience with Caryn Paradis was excellent from start to finish. We had an unfinished basement that we wanted to finish and didn't know where to begin. Caryn talked with us in detail about how we wanted to use our basement and then came up with plans that included all of our needs as well as ideas that we hadn't even considered but should have. She was able to design a space that incorporated areas for everyone in our family, including our young son--even a stage that could be pulled apart for use as couches when he becomes a teenager! Because we live in separate states, Caryn was able to do much of the work remotely with minimal visits to our home to take measurements, etc. She had finish samples sent directly to us quickly and walked us through the decision making process. She designed specific requests, such as a fireplace for my husband and a guest room/office area. Caryn paid attention not only to the aesthetics of the job, but also the practicalities, such as outlet placement and HVAC. She also included amenities such as a well-placed dorm fridge which will come in handy when our son is old enough to use the space as a hang-out with friends. All in all, the job was smooth, well-designed and surprisingly painless. Caryn listened to our needs and then exceeded them. We would recommend her without reservation.

We worked with The Huberman's to renovate and design our new 10,000 square foot home. It was a 2 year project, where we changed every element of the home: lighting and audio systems, wall coverings and floor design, purchasing all furniture (mostly custom) bedding, towels, all decor pieces. . No stone was left unturned. We worked seamlessly together to create our dream home which we now have the pleasure of living in. Not only is the home a showpiece, but it is comfortable and inviting in every space. The Huberman's are creative and thoughtful and totally dedicated to their projects and their clients. We would highly recommend working with them.

We recently converted several rooms of our home into a Master Suite. Whitney, from The Dahl House, helped me pick out shower and wall tiles, paint colors, window dressing fabrics and provided over all feedback on furniture positioning and room layout. I already had furniture and had picked up some of the decor online and at sales. But the beautiful end result, would not have been accomplished without Whitney's eye for color and design to pull it all together. She professionally worked with what I had and built on it seamlessly while taking into consideration my underdeveloped vision. Whitney even accompanied me shopping for window dressing fabric and gave me advice on how to sew them myself, when my budget was running low. Each day I now wake up in a space that is finished, beautiful and perfect - thanks to Whitney!

Jonathan is brilliant, in his knowledge of how to design something you have in your head onto paper, precisely. He has the tools, the background education, the psychology to deal with people who just don't know if their ideas about what they want can be done and he interacts with people like no one I have ever met before. I was so lucky to have found him, I recommend him to anyone who is thinking about doing a home project and just does not know where to begin. Jonathan is your person to help you with this!! He is so happy doing this job and that means us, as homeowners benefit from his joy of his job! I recommend to anyone thinking of updating/adding on their home to use Jonathan!

My decor was outdated and tired. I had Kelly design colors for my front hall, kitchen, den, and living room. She also suggested applied moldings for the front hall and up the stairs as well as resurfacing an old rock fireplace in the livingroom. She suggested a carpenter, painter, and stone mason who transformed my house from a look of the 80s to a modern look. She helped me pick out the colors, the moldings, and the marble to resurface the fireplace. She supervised the work daily and was a joyful presence during the transformation. The best part of the whole experience was that she really listened to me to help me attain the results I desired. Another plus was that I did not make costly uninformed design or color decisions. A great designer, great results, and a great experience. Change was not stressful with Kelly on the job.

Kathryn helped me with my sister's wedding. A second marriage the bride was on an extremely tight budget. She had very specific ideas when it came to her flowers particularly as it pertain to her table arrangements. She insisted on artificial and wanted to keep them low. Kathryn not only had the design and color scheme within hours but she also presented ideas for the bouquet and head table all within budget! The bride loved her Ideas and the finish product was more than I could have hoped for! Kathryn really listened to what I wanted. She was easy to work with and I would not hesitate to recommend her to all my friends!

Trish did a complete gut renovation of our duplex - kitchen, 2 1/2 baths, new fireplace, living room, bedrooms, office and foyer. As a non-designer person it is difficult to envision possiblities but Trish helped us along and we surrendered some ideas we "thought" we wanted- Thank God she keep helping us evolve! The project exceeded our expectations, resulting in Awards and a magazine cover spread! And most of all We loved it - beautiful, elegant, social and comfortable. The details were stunning- Swarovski Chrystal pendants, surprising stairway floor lighting, custom marble fireplace, glass beaded wallpaper, beautiful fabrics to a yin and yang philosophy inspired kitchen/living room. She's gifted- you can't go wrong if you want beautiful home.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
