Irv and his crew were great to work with. They did a complete redo of our bathroom, demo, new pipes, new electric, new fixtures, wall and floor tiling with beautiful results. Irv gave good advice on design and fixtures, and he was efficient with both time and cost.

I evaluated numerous interior designers before deciding on Magi Designs, and it is with great pleasure that I am writing this testimonial. It is a company run by a highly professional and delightfully personable couple, who complement each other perfectly and are clearly passionate about their chosen career. In charge of all matters design-related, Mariama’s expert eye for style, color, materials and space has proved invaluable in the process of turning our new house into a classy, inviting and treasured home. Magi Designs has not only met my high expectations, but actually exceeded them. I was sold ever since my first consultation with them. A winning attitude and outstanding listening skills were coupled with Mariama’s uncanny ability to quickly identify our (mainly mine) tastes and styles, as well as effortlessly and creatively managing to incorporate existing pieces of furniture into an innovative design and layout. Throughout the process, I was given options, never pressured, merely gently guided in the direction of my desired look. Moreover, even my husband, who was initially opposed to involving professionals, was very pleasantly surprised upon realizing that his apprehension of designers creating an overly pricey space proved to be completely unfounded. In fact, we were both astounded at how very affordable this project turned out to be! This was significantly aided by the trade discounts we benefited from, as well as our team’s highly commendable diligence and efficiency. This project, so close to my heart, was perfectly executed from concept to end product, very timely and within budget. In summary, they have been a veritable joy to work with, and I intend to continue consulting their expertise. I cannot recommend them highly enough: knowledgeable, organized, detail-oriented, very honest, conscientious and truly caring-- to name but some of their qualities. Hiring Magi Designs was among the best decisions I’ve ever made!

Working with Bharti is like exploring your own sense of aestheticism. She is not only the most comfortable interior designer to work with, but a beautiful person at heart to know. She gives out wonderful ideas to make your house appealing to all your senses including your soul. When I moved into my new house, it was overwhelming for me to initiate the process of setting it up. Bharti was my soul saver who came with excellent ideas and helped me fill up my house with class and comfort. Working with her was a joyful journey as her patience and calmness helped my cluttered thoughts come out seamless. I highly recommend working with her, she is the best designer.

We hired Henrick to help us with design challenges in our kitchen/bathroom/dining area. Along with a master bath and basement. His ideas were creative, beautiful, and well thought out. We were able to rely on his plan to complete our work --which is still in progress. I highly recommend

In early 2015 Laurene worked with me on a project to remodel my master bathroom and walk-in closets. Once the layout was established maximize the space, I was then presented with lovely options for all the fixtures. Any changes were addressed promptly with new options based on my taste. A date was chosen to start and her contractor and his assistants were prompt, efficient, and communicated very well…as Laurene does. As with all large projects, unexpected delays did occur, with unknowns hidden behind the walls. This was no surprise. Throughout the project all questions were addressed quickly, and with the help of Laurene, so were decisions. Laurene bases her decisions on the client’s taste, but adds a twist to enhance the final result. Her taste on how colors, textures, and furnishings all blend together to create a flow in the room is one of her great traits. The bathroom project turned out fabulously, and actually better than I expected.

Soudi did an amazing job staging a listing and turned the whole project around in a week. She made the house look warm and cozy...she gave great advice. I loved her staging so much that I’d like her to come and design my house....and give it the cohesiveness it needs.

We worked with The Huberman's to renovate and design our new 10,000 square foot home. It was a 2 year project, where we changed every element of the home: lighting and audio systems, wall coverings and floor design, purchasing all furniture (mostly custom) bedding, towels, all decor pieces. . No stone was left unturned. We worked seamlessly together to create our dream home which we now have the pleasure of living in. Not only is the home a showpiece, but it is comfortable and inviting in every space. The Huberman's are creative and thoughtful and totally dedicated to their projects and their clients. We would highly recommend working with them.

I am so exceptionally thrilled with the outcome of my living room and the experience using Kristin for support. The couch, wall paint, carpet and tv stand were exactly what I articulated and within budget. The couch arrived yesterday and other elements soon to deliver. Everything was timed perfectly as well around my busy work/travel schedule. Will absolutely use her for Bedroom next!

The combination of her expert sense of style and extraordinary taste, and the confidence to not just execute our preconceived design ideas but rather to push us to consider options outside of our box, has made Helen a resource we have, and will continue to, come back to time and time again. Her work has been outstanding in all respects, as the results reflect. I am a real estate broker, and primarily sell apartments in the very large complex where I live. It is important that my apartment is as comfortable and inviting as possible, as I often bring clients to see it, so they can envision what they can do with the less attractive unit they might be considering. From the kitchen - now about 15 years old but looking like it was done yesterday - to the soft soffit lighting and exquisite baths Helen designed, people are taken with how much can be done and how wonderful their future home can look. On numerous occasions my clients have become Helen's clients, and have thanked me for the recommendation. When we outgrew our vacation house and became frustrated trying to find something that would better meet our needs, we decided to tear down all but the foundation and enlarge and rebuild it. We got Helen involved from the very earliest planning stages, and, working with our architect and contractors, she was instrumental in creating an award winning home. She was easy to work with, but exacting, and would not let us accept work that was only 95% perfect. Helen sourced the materials we used, from concrete counters to ceramic and stone bathroom tiles to plumbing and lighting fixtures and flooring, designed our kitchen and baths, and worked with and guided us in selecting the furnishings and accessories. Her imprint was on almost every aspect of the house, which no doubt resulted in its selection, by its readers, as the Overall Favorite in an on-line Architectural Digest competition. Helen Grubel has been a pleasure to work with, and we consider ourselves fortunate to have been able to do so. I have no hesitation giving her the highest recommendation I can.

These guys did the interior work of a few rooms est. 2000 sq ft - sanding walls, patching holes, painting, trimming etc. the whole 9 yards. I couldn’t be more pleased with the work. They left no “blemishes” and paint did not go into any “red zones.” My father who is in the construction industry testifified to the level of excellence they performed for all the work they have done. Not only for the painting, but also the work in the bathroom. They tore away and installed new tile and needed some plumbing work done. I had the bathtub relocated and the sink. These guys not only do quality work, but they keep the work area clean and finished the job ahead of schedule. Very polite and transparent, they walk you through the entire process of what to expect and keep you updated along the way. This is a hassle free company. I always felt like they took me by the hand and walked me through the whole thing. No stress. I did order the turn key service- every penny was worth it. The price is also good. I will absolutely use them again and would highly recommend them.

I would gladly recommend Jon's work! Bel Air remodeled my kitchen and master bath, and the work is gorgeous. I couldn't be happier. Bel Air was also the most reasonably priced contractor I found after searching and interviewing several and taking many quotes. The most important piece to me is that Jon warrantees his work and replaced a faulty light switch for free when I called. That's peace of mind.

Everything was so fresh and new, that I received compliments on my apartment. The designer was easy to work with and full of great ideas.

I have know Ed for about 15 years, observing his work over that period on various local projects, but not in need of an architect. This past year I decided to widen my driveway to accommodate the increase of cars to be parked on the property, but was finding many road blocks. Ed researched above and beyond to find a way to help me. Through his knowledge, perseverance and skills, he not only was successful in taking care of our needs, but took the task of working with the Building Department and DPW off my hands. Ed is easy to work with and extremely efficient. I would highly recommend him as an architect.

Jonathan is brilliant, in his knowledge of how to design something you have in your head onto paper, precisely. He has the tools, the background education, the psychology to deal with people who just don't know if their ideas about what they want can be done and he interacts with people like no one I have ever met before. I was so lucky to have found him, I recommend him to anyone who is thinking about doing a home project and just does not know where to begin. Jonathan is your person to help you with this!! He is so happy doing this job and that means us, as homeowners benefit from his joy of his job! I recommend to anyone thinking of updating/adding on their home to use Jonathan!

For the three rooms we've done with Deb, she's always come in on (or under) budget, on time, and over-delivered what we expected. She did a full redesign of our family room (paint, sofa, area rug, photos, etc) and added touches to rooms that I wanted refreshed, but didn't have the budget to completely overhaul. The process was so easy and the result so wonderful, my husband hired Deb and surprised me with a bedroom re-design for my birthday. They teamed up and gave me a personalized, beautiful surprise. We told Deb the function we needed and some of our color preferences. She came back with great choices. We'll hire her again.

We had a vacant apartment in our home and decided to rent it out. It needed an updated look before we could show it. Brenda Home Staging came in and provided several options for a new layout, color scheme and updated fixtures. All within budget. Would definitely recommend!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
