Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

Jason did a photo shoot for our family of 6 (we have 2 graduates) at the National Mall & GWU on Monday. He was extremely nice , polite , patient & professional . All the photos he sent us ( more than 80) are beautiful & high quality . He’s very passionate about his work and his rate is very reasonable , much lower than all the photographers I spoke to. Book him and you’ll be v happy & satified . Thanks Jason.

Valeriia was incredible— exceeded my expectations!! As someone who has never done any kind of photo shoot whatsoever, I had no idea what to expect. Valeriia was SO efficient and kind, she made my clumsy awkward self look flawless! HUNDREDS of photos in just under an hour, I couldn’t believe it. She captured my accomplishment of graduating better than I could have ever imagined. I’ve never felt so confident about photos of myself, recommending her to EVERYONE!

Beyond impressed with 7th Tree and with our photographer Derrick. He gave us suggestions on how to make our shots better and suggested graduation shots that we hadn’t thought of took lots of candids that we can’t wait to see! When GW has in person ceremonies I want to have him take pictures of my family. The most thoughtful, professional, creative and kind photographer really knows his craft well- and we benefitted from that!

I hired the Grayton Group for graduation photos, and the experience exceeded my expectations by every metric. I immediately recommended Chris Grayton to all of my friends. The package was the most affordable option I found, and Chris was exceedingly generous with his time and the photos he turned around in a single day. He was knowledgeable about photography angles and colors and about the best spots in the DC area. He was also knowledgeable about DC overall, which made walking around with him very interesting. He was very polite, professional, and skilled, and he made taking photos fun. I am absolutely hiring him again and I highly recommend him.

We recently moved to the DMV area and I did not know any photographers. I found Josh online and feel in love with his work! I really don’t like taking photos, but Josh made that process so stress free! I did some photos for my up coming graduation with my husband and they came out so stunning! I wanted something to remember all the heart and soul I put into this degree and Josh could not have captured it any better! If you looking for someone who has great talent, makes you feel comfortable, and is extremely nice! I will definitely be using him in the future for any photography needs!!

I had a fantastic experience using Jamaal for my graduation photos this Spring. He was always quick to reply, very polite and informative. On the shoot day he had no problem walking around the chosen photoshoot sites to find the perfect lighting and spots to shoot. He met me by the Lincoln Memorial and also did some shots by the World War II Memorial. All the photos came out great and it was easy to pay and share with my friends and family. Great price for a great experience!

I had an AMAZING experience with Lotus Photography! Georgette and her husband were very nice and professional. She really took my vision and thoughts into consideration since the first time we spoke over the phone. She was very responsive to any questions I had prior to and after the photoshoot. She also had creative ideas to make the photoshoot so much fun! Since I was taking photos for graduation, she brought some confetti and found beautiful areas on campus to take photos. It was more than I could've asked for. She was very flexible, and took a variety of photos that really enabled me to have so many great photo options at the end. She took a mixture of solo photos and also incorporated my boyfriend into some great shots that I'm very excited to print for my house. Accessing the photos was easy, and the link can be sent to family and friends very soon after the photoshoot. Her photos came out absolutely beautiful! I would definitely recommend having her take your photos. Thank you so much Georgette!

Jim agreed to shoot a date-sensitive family photo session two months in advance of the date, and then failed to respond to my emails/texts/phone calls or confirm in the many weeks and days leading up to our date. His complete lack of responsiveness left us, literally, scrambling to find his replacement amidst the busy Spring weddings/graduation season at the last minute. A simple email or text letting us know he was not available would have sufficed, and saved us a great deal of stress, anger, puzzlement, and uncertainly.

We hired Carrie to take pictures of our family following a graduation ceremony in DC. She met us on-time, was very friendly, and was interested in going the extra mile to get us a great shot. The pictures were very important and special to our parents so we were thrilled to get them done. The pictures were excellent quality and she took a TON. Everything since has been great. She quickly responds to our consistent emails asking about editing, printing, and costs. Next time I need a photographer I am calling Carrie!
