My husband and I moved from Baltimore to Boston, and we could not have been happier with Your Friends with a Truck. Not only is it very reasonably priced, but David was an absolute joy to work with. First of all, he is very easy to reach by e-mail or phone. I never went to voicemail once, and he responded within 30 minutes of every e-mail inquiry I made within business hours. Second, his movers were very professional, even though they had to deal with less-than-ideal moving conditions. It was raining the day we moved, and the freight elevator in our apartment building was out of service. The movers took these issues in a stride, and everything arrived in perfect condition the next day. Third, David followed up with us several times over the course of the move to make sure that we were satisfied with everything. Finally, David was very flexible with our time frame. Unlike other companies, where the move would have taken multiple days to complete, Your Friends with a Truck got our stuff to Boston in a single day. Overall, I would highly recommend this moving company, because they did a great job for us!

We hired Name Your Price Movers for a last minute move to a home we purchased expecting to hold our apartment lease for several more months. They were quick, reliable, and professional. We had three men for three hours and all of our stuff arrived safe and sound. They worked hard to fit our things exactly where we wanted them! I would highly recommend Name Your Price Movers!

I had some pieces of furniture and a number of boxes to move into a storage unit. Though the movers were a few minutes late, they did a good job and communicated with me about wrapping/not wrapping items. I really appreciated that they were able to keep the job under the estimated two hours, and that the box truck was included in the price.

The move went very smoothly, and they made it look easy. The only issue I had was that I got a call from the Piano Movers about an hour and a half before the two hour window was supposed to start, saying they were running early and that they would be at the starting location in 45 minutes. This caused me to have to rush to try to get there at the same time as them, and I was unable to get there until approximately 15 minutes after the time they stated they were going to get there in the phone call. I felt bad for making them wait, but it was still a full half hour before the originally stated window was supposed to begin.

Excellent move from Virginia to Florida. Packers arrived on time. Packed and loaded one truck the first day. Movers arrived on time the following day and loaded furniture and remainder of house. Flawless execution at about 1/3 less than the price for other movers.

Fast and hard working. I can't image doing what these guys do day in and day out. My last movers took double the time A-1 did to move the exact same stuff. They saved me a ton of money with their speedy effort. Thanks!!!

I agreed to a specific time with a local manager and then it changed the day before but eventually we came up with another time the same day.. The movers were professional and fast. They did, however, break a light fixture (luckily $8/cheap) and make a dent in the wall. But, my items were fine and I was overall happy with the move and reasonable price.

These guys are my absolute heroes. Not only were they able to book at the very last min (my other movers cancelled last min!), but they were in constant communication, fees/prices were completely transparent, and the movers were professional, fast, and hardworking. They literally embody those words. They were only 15 min late and I got a call 30 min before they were scheduled to update me on their position. Every single one of my items (electronics, furniture, boxes) were in 100% perfect condition after the move. They moved me down three floors and then up three floors without an elevator both times, and did it so fast. This company absolutely saved my life. I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Brandon did a great job at replacing my mounted TV, and fixing my unstable storage bed. He and his partner Bill were on time, and provided great customer service. They were also able to conceal my TV cables behind my wall at my last-minute request.

I hired Tim to help me move a 1 BR apartment. At first I was hesitant, since his quote mentioned "up to 3 people" - but he ended up showing up by himself. Apparently, the people he usually works with cancelled him last minute. However, this was no trouble for Tim, as he handled all my belongings with great care (wrapped them with quilts and shrink wrap), and had no trouble loading everything into the truck. As our time window to move was shrinking, Tim realized he needed another set of hands, so he went and hired someone to help him at his expense while respecting the lowered quote he had given me (since the other movers didn't show up). I really appreciated Tim's integrity and how careful he was with my stuff - I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again, as I know he'll do a great job, no matter the circumstances.

Very pleased with his work. We needed someone to help us pack for a move since our movers were coming 2 days later. He was very careful and thorough with his work and we felt very comfortable knowing that our stuff was safe and secure. I would hire him again for this type of job.

We hired Dan to load a shipping container for us for an overseas move. Right off the bat he impressed us with his professionalism, and it was apparent throughout the process that he genuinely cared about the move. He offered to pack and wrap everything for us, but wasn't fazed about giving us rough estimates of the materials we needed to do it ourselves. Only 4 of 5 stars because one of his movers called sick on moving day. That said, Dan didn't miss a beat and the move went smoothly. Extremely fair, honest company. Highly recommended. Thanks again Dan!!

Tracy B., Springfield, VA: I hired Checkmate on a whim because I needed a last minute move done. They were able to fulfill the request on a short notice and did a great job! I wasn't sure all of my things would fit into the smaller truck I ordered but Adrian and his team worked it perfectly to make it happen in one trip. A+, highly recommend.

To start, they were 2 hours late, apparently running late from another move in the morning before ours. Movers that came were great! They were friendly, wrapped everything important in padding, and were quick moving in and out. Everything went fine save for them being late, which could have thrown things off.

I utilized pick up movers last month on January 2nd. I was delivered by January 15th. Everthing went smooth like a well oiled machine. I never had a professional move, I usually move myself with the help of my husband and 2 boys until I moved out of state. My husband isn't very easily satisfied and he couldn't be happier with the effortless portion on our part. I appreciate the pricing and the service the movers were very courteous. Thank You!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
