Customize every resume for each job posting for which you apply. 1. Understand the Resumes Purpose A resumes purpose is to land an interview, not get you a job. Many people think that a resume is a life story that talks about your entire work historygaps and all. This is wrong. So how do you write a resume? What is a resume? A resume is a marketing document that is trying to get the employer excited to meet you, just like a movie poster tries to get you excited to go see a movie. Only include relevant information in your resume. 2. Focus on Accomplishments Try to avoid the phrase duties included. Rather, focus on things you did that you are actually proud of. Also, talking about how you made a company money, saved a company money, and improved customer relations is always a plus. 3. Quantify, quantify, quantify Just as location is huge in real estate, numbers are critical to a good resume. Dont say that you increased company profits; rather, talk about how much revenue you brought in. By discussing specific numbers, not only do you justify your paycheck, you make it easier to negotiate salary and earn a larger paycheck. 4. Make It Symmetrical Obvious, but very important. Looks count very much. When a hiring manager goes through piles of resumes, he spends about 10 seconds on each one. And better looking resumes almost always win. 5. Use a Simple Font . . . Or Send a PDF First, make sure that the font is easy to readno cursive or obscure fonts. If you want to use a unique font that IS easy to read, send the file as a pdf rather than a doc. If the employer doesnt have that font, when the file loads all the employer will see is strange symbols. 6. Use Keywords in the Resume
