I met Denise while working for another dog trainer and realized that as soon as I had a dog of my own I wanted her to help me with training. When I adopted my husky puppy I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting into and was prepared to have a long road of training ahead of me. After my first consult and class I knew that I had found the right person to guide me through my dog ownership. Denise has been nothing but knowledgeable, helpful, and wonderful to work with. She is always quick to answer questions and explain training in a way that I understand. Since working with her my husky is off leash trained, lIves peacefully with cats, and is a joy to work with. Denise was always there to encourage me and to be honest with me when I was making mistakes. My husky went from being an unruly puppy to a well behaved member of my family. She is a superior titled weight puller and is on her way to winning rally titles as well. I will continue to use Denise for my dog training needs.

On Sunday I researched dog trainers via thumbtack and with only a few hours Mr. Hunter replied back! Talk about a quick response! We were able to schedule a consultation with him that following Tuesday. We are in the middle of a 2 week trial adoption with a husky mix (Sokka) and needed guidance on how to introduce him with our cats. Sokka is a very friendly dog and is so curious. We wanted to learn how to calm him before meeting our cats. Mr. Hunter is very professional. He was able to show us the dog's potential. He gave us great tips on how to correctly walk with a leash with little to no pulling. He would show us first and then have us do it. If any corrections were needed, he did not hesitate to tell us. You can tell this is his passion. Definitely recommend him! Did I mention he travels to your house?! Talk about convenience!

Deb just left the house after a wonderful 2 hour session. I have always had dogs but never ever thought about using a dog trainer. Well I must say that Deb brought so much to the training of our Lab that it was invaluable. She is so knowledgeable, professional and very personable making the session a fun' experience for all of us. We highly, highly recommend Deb to anyone looking for a dog trainer!

Dan is an outstanding dog trainer who is able to explain complex concepts to both dog and owner. Many trainers can use a few tricks to get quick compliance from your dog, but Dan is special because he gives you the tools you need as an owner to keep the training going!

My husband and I are so happy that we have discovered Steve Broadwell from Diamonds In The Woof to help us with our dog, Winston. Steve has been a life-saver and we are so pleased working with him. He is professional, highly knowledgeable, and has not only helped our dog, but has helped us, too. Our dog is a handful and we're still a work in progress, but Winston has really come a long way, all thanks to Steve. We not only feel as though we have hired the best dog-trainer in the area (we have!), but we have also made a friend who truly loves and cares about our dog.

Heather accomplished more in 3 sessions than previous dog trainers who spent much, much more time, but were less knowledgeable about how to effectively handle my dog's behavioral problems. She went directly to the problem behavior and after each session had produced lasting results. Everyone says my dog is like a whole different dog while maintaining his great enthusiasm for being alive. Positive training and rewards all the way. I would highly recommend her services. She doesn't just talk, she delivers.

We had two separate vacations this Summer, with one week home in-between. We did the two week training package and used one week per vacation. Kayla usually likes to have both weeks run consecutively, but she agreed to do them separate for us. We understood that the week in-between we really had to work with our dog. Our dog is a 1 year old German Shephard. He was a kind dog before Kayla, but he has surpassed our expectations. He is so well behaved and responds to the commands she told us about. Everything we asked her to work on and things we did not think of, Kayla got our dog to do it all. He is so amazing and we are so proud of him. We are so grateful to Kayla. She was wonderful to work with and we will be using her in the future for boarding (our dog loved her). We can't brag enough about her and we would refer her to anyone for training or boarding. She has a special way with animals.

I tried 2 other dog trainers before working with Matt Ferramosca @ OLK9 training...what a difference! Matt is the best trainer I have ever worked with! I have a 2yr old energetic and very verbal German Shepherd .After his 2 week board and train, Alex is a different dog! I have walked him off leash in a park during a very busy weekend with people kids bikes and other dogs and he was wonderful! I rec'd many complements but referred the compliments to Matt at OLK9 Training. And the training doesn't end there! Matt is always available via phone text or email for questions and concerns! I highly recommend Matt and OLK9 Training for all of your training needs for big and small dogs of all breeds!

Excellent dog trainer and dog sitter. We have been with Bark U since we got our puppy a year ago. They are very caring, trustworthy and responsible. Easily reached for advice and questions. Christine is like a second mommy to our dog. I don't have to look to a kennel because Bark U also provides boarding. My dog gets to stay with someone he knows and trusts, gets to continue his schooling with his canine buddies and training while we are away. I never have to worry. Excellent service. Highly recommend.

We trust Angie 100% with our 3 year old boxer/beagle mix. She allows us to enjoy our long weekends/vacations without worrying about our boy. We even call it doggie camp because he loves going to her house!! She gives him plenty of attention and exercise and we love that she is watching him in her home! Hemi can be a bit shy and nervous, but with Angie he has the environment to be the loving fun dog that he is. We will definitely use Angie’s services again in the future!!

If you are looking for a dog trainer, your search ends here. I purchased a 10-week-old Australian Cattle Dog in late September and about two weeks after, we were at our wits end with the dog, and considered taking the three and a half hour drive back to the breeder. From not being able to walk around the house without having your pant legs pulled at, to sleepless nights (or nights spent on the floor with the pup), and not being able to sit on the couch without being bit, it was becoming too much to handle. Then we decided to go to Steve at A-1 Total Control Dog Training. Years ago, I lived in a development with the most well trained dog I’ve ever encountered. Being only about 5-6 years old, I vaguely remember my neighbors, my house, and even my friends, but I will never forget this dog. While living here, my family got a Great Pyrenees puppy that enjoyed nothing more than slipping out the door and taking off around the development. Luckily, when the trained dog’s owner would see this, he would send his dog in a full sprint to circle around our puppy until we were able to get to her to bring her home. The dog was simply amazing, and was trained by Steve. Now, in just our fifth week of training, our puppy is on track to rival this dog from my childhood. Though she is still young and has a long way to go, Steve gives the tools and instruction for everybody to be able to do so, and we are confident she will get to this level of obedience. Do not waste your time or money elsewhere and take your dog of any age to Steve at A-1 Total Control Dog Training. It will be the best decision you will ever make for you and your dog.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
