John is outstanding to work with, and the pride he takes in his work really shows. John is friendly, fast, honest, and a true craftsman. We initially hired John to install a couple of storm doors for us and now he is helping us with all of the renovations to our home. We are lucky to have found someone as hardworking and reliable as John.

We were so fortunate to have Ryan do all of the renovations at my Father's House in Maryland. Ryan not only was an excellent contractor but he was always so polite and always responsive to any questions. He is trustworthy, reliable, and cost conscious and I was blessed to have him do the renovations even with the long distance between where we live in Florida and the house in Maryland. Even when we ran into additional work that had to be done Ryan was always able and willing to get an estimate and complete the work. I would highly recommend him for any renovation work. More importantly, we really enjoyed working with him. He was so nice.

I hired Glenn to remodel my son's closet, then it grew into remodeling his entire room. Glenn was the consummate professional, with a creative eye and ideas. I trusted him implicitly and the results were more than I could ever imagine. If I ever have any other projects, I will make sure to reach out to him again! He definitely has a lifetime repeat customer! Thanks so much for all your help, Glenn!

arrived and provided an estimate, started punctually, completed a difficult project (removing aluminum siding) that others would not tackle, and replaced original siding w/o damage, made repairs and improvements and stuck to the estimate; cleaned up and removed debris, Mark Lis restored my faith in dealing with contractors- I would recommend Lis Improvements- with more stars if available. A long delayed project completed to satisfaction

“Finding an honest hard-working contractor who really has pride in his work is sadly the exception, rather than the rule. Mr. Falcone and his company exceeded our expectations as to both the quality of the workmanship and cost of the project. The cost and scope of the work were explained up front, and we were kept advised, each step of the way, as to what to expect next. We were always kept “in the loop” and are exceedingly satisfied with the quality of the renovations performed. We now have an office environment that we are very proud of and which is both warm and professional; the two goals which we had from the very beginning of the project. I would highly recommend Mr. Falcone and his company to any business looking to renovate their office in a cost-effective, timely and professional manner.” – Howard S. Will's Home Remodeling was the general contractor for my major residential renovation at 183Jordan Road in Somers Point NJ. The project took about 4 months to complete where we completely gutted and renovated this badly damaged home that sat vacant for over 5 years. This was a $100k+ renovation for total labor and materials and Will and his team were the glue that kept the project on track and within budget. Will and his team personally completed all new vinyl siding, all new windows, new roofing, new gutters, new insulation, several new walls, stucco and cement repair, new stair steps, bathroom and shower and back splash and accent tile work, kitchen cabinet installation, wall board, spackling, caulking, trim work, door frames, shower doors and many miscellaneous requests. Will partnered well with some challenging subcontractors in the areas of plumbing, electrical, outside concrete, flooring and granite counter top installation. When the other subcontractors dropped the ball, Will was always there with a creative solution and to help get them back on task. I would definitely hire Wills Home Remodeling for my next project.

I give my highest recommendation to Jake Esh and his team. Polite, professional, prompt - followed through on each and every detail of the project. The workmanship on my Trex deck is the best that I've seen. Not a single screw, fastener or flaw can be seen. The attention to detail was superb. Jake explained every option of each detail for approval prior to moving ahead with the work. He also fixed a roof leak that has been plaguing our house since we moved in - and did so at a very reasonable price. We had some good choices in deck builders as we conducted our search, but now that the project is completed we are convinced that we definitely made the right choice with Stoney Ridge Home Improvements. We'll be asking them back this spring to look at our other renovation projects we have planned.

Rich helped us with our kitchen remodel project in our town home in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The project included removal of half of a wall, and installation of ceramic tile flooring, hardwood cabinets, and appliances, including all accompanying electrical and plumbing work. The job is still in progress, as we are waiting on additional parts to be delivered from the cabinet company. Rich is very flexible and easy to work with. He was able to answer any questions we had about the project and provide advice from his professional experience. Overall, Rich was a polite and trustworthy guy who has been a pleasure to work with. His prices are fair and from what we have seen so far, the quality of his work is excellent.

We wish we hired Building Leaders to do the renovation that we undertook two years ago - they would have saved us a lot of money, time, and frustration. They honestly reinstilled our faith in the contracting community - we've had several terrible experiences from other contracting companies. This was such different and positive experience, we wanted to share. If you're looking for a contractor who is honest, keeps his promises, who delivers quality outcomes and within budget, and respects your home/personal space -- Building Leaders needs to be considered. They were hired to bring a pretty complex project and design to life. Sami, the owner, did an amazing job partnering with our Interior Designer, Keegan Riotto from Revamp Designs. They successfully completed a 3 month project that included a complete demolition of an unusable space. The scope of work included building of multiple decks, build out and construction of new closets/rooms. They also masterfully installed a stacked stone wall - they did such an awesome job, the stacked stone manufacture has sent a photographer to take photos to showcase in their catalog/websites. Sami and team also installed ~800sq ft of Aztek pavers, completed electrical work to support a complex lifting scheme, roofing work, etc. Bottom line, Building Leaders -- is a very professional, honest, and skilled company that took Revamp's designs and beautifully transformed a once unusable space to an oasis that we're able to use on daily basis. His team was challenged with weather and other issues and they absolutely did an amazing job. One last item to share...those of you who've had renovations or work done on your house while living there - it can be terribly disruptive and stressful when you have the wrong contractor who does not respect the fact that you are living there during construction (we have small children) -- Sami and his team were so respectful and thoughtful in this regard - they took precautions to ensure our home and personal property (and kids) were cared for/safe and they the time to clean up the site EVERY day!! Thanks Building Leaders/Sami, we love our new spaces and appreciate they great work. I highly recommend Sami and his team - honest to work with, competitively priced, stellar craftsmanship, on time and extremely respectful.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
