I live out of the state and my mom lives by herself. One day around early afternoon last week she called me in a panic mood and told me her water heater tank was leaking badly and her entire first floor was flooded. An old lady, who has no knowledge of anything about water heater tank, live by herself; no matter which way I looked at this situation, I heard cha-ching, cha-ching! I went on Thumbtack right away as I had some good experience with Thumbtack recently for my own place. Tony responded in about 10 mins, and after reading the reviews, I contacted him immediately. His schedule was full that day. Despite I told him we probably can wait until the next day, he told me if we were ok, he would be there around 8:00PM same day as gas water heater leaking is dangerous. Tony showed up later than 8, but I think it's understandable as he was far. After checking out the leak, he told my mom the water tank needed to be replaced, and he could be there next day same time. I confirmed with my mom, she said she saw where was leaking and a replacement was a good option. Tony went out and bought my mom a new tank next day, and then went back to install it for her at a very, very reasonable price. There was a little miscommunication which is understandable as my mom doesn't speak English as the first language, and they two settled that issue. Overall, both mom and I are very satisfied with Tony's work.

I had the pleasure of using Josh and his guys from Solutions based Plumbing twice so far. The first time I got to use them the week before Christmas my hot water heater went south . Being seven years old I just assumed that I would need to replace the hot water heater. Being the honest guy that Josh's, he informed me that I only needed to replace the vent blower at a substantially reduced cost. Now I know any other plumber would have just sold me a complete new hot water heater to the tune of three grand but not Josh. They steer me in the right direction I really appreciate that. Last week I had them replace the 30 year old valves under my kitchen sink it was like they were never even there. totally cleaned up after they were done and very reasonable

Sam is my go to guy for my residence and my business. I’ve had him perform preventative maintenance on my HVAC unit at my home and business. He also fixed my hot water heater at my residence quickly and efficiently. Most recently, he came to my business, on a moments notice and got on the roof, literally in the middle of a snow storm and restored heat to my business along with a new nest thermostat. If you want professionalism, knowledge and quality work, Advanced Heating and Air is where you’ll find it.

My water heater broke on and they were able to come look at my crawl space/water heater the next day on a Sunday. James took my information down and then they ordered the water heater and installed it. I believe his name was Will but he somehow was able to get the new one installed in a very tight space in my Baltimore city home. They made the process so easy, were very considerate of cleaning up, and kept me informed throughout the whole process that I decided to buy a maintenance plan with them. I would recommend using them and have already had my parents reach out.

I’ve used ep210 for several jobs: conversion of oil heat to natural gas (including removal of a huge oil tank); installation of a high efficiency boiler; removal and replacement of 120 year old radiators; work on water and gas line repiping; and hot water heater replacement and installation. I’m very pleased to recommend them highly because they are honest, do great work, and do it at a great price. They are my go-to for all heating and cooling services.

Zack came and replaced my hot water heater as a same day service. He was wonderful to deal with. Not only did he remove the old unit, but he completely cleaned up the area upon installation of the new unit. Zack was thorough and competent as well as courteous and a real professional in his work. I strongly recommend hiring him and will certainly go to him first for future work. Thank you, Zack!!

Murray responded to my request quickly and came out the next day to provide a quote. I appreciated that he did some diagnostics (took off the front panel, felt the pipes, etc). The other plumbers immediately told me I needed a new water heater without that assessment. He provided two options and when I decided to get a new water heater, he came out the next day and was able to find a larger one to provide me with more hot water. Also, he gave a 1 year warranty on the work done (which none of the other plumbers offered). He added an expansion tank with the installation to help preserve my pipes as well. Further, when I noticed a small leak in my kitchen sink, he took some time to look at it and gave me a quick fix/told me where to go for the part and how to fix it myself. Overall, I had a very positive experience and would use M Resnick Plumbing again.

I was frustrated by another plumber that had just quoted $1800.00 for a $100.00 part that would take an hour to replace. I called Steve and he had a plumber over within 2 hours to fix my hot water heater for a fraction of the first quote. His pricing is fair and service is fantastic!

I've used 7 Sees Remodeling several times now. The owner (Bryan) knows his stuff. He's done my kitchen floor, installed a tankless hot water heater, fixed the leak in my bathtub, and next he's going to add an electric outlet in my daughters room. Does great work and always cleans up before he leaves. Highly recommend!!!

I had Noah come out to my house on March 3rd to figure out why I had no hot water. He came to the conclusion that my gas valve went bad on my water heater. He came up with a price for a new one, I felt it was a fair price considering the market price for installing one. He came and installed it an hour later. He is a respectful and knowledgeable young man.

I noticed a a small leak i my basement next to the water heater round tank. The pilot light had gone out 2 or 3 times in last couple day and spent about 20 minutes each time to re-light. But called J&B and asked me to put my finger into opening to see if it was wet - and it was VERY wet which caused the pilot light R0 go out more and more often. Jim from J&B called and AS SOON Q d explained the problem and came out gave free estimate, Replace water heater asap as it COULD JUST EXPLODE AT any time and there would be over 40 gallons flooding the entire basement, J&B replaced it, Cleaned up all the water that leaked and checked the Central Air for free, replaced the filter at did not charge and for the A/C check -up and or filers and NO charge at all. Great people and RECOMMENDING J&B fr large and small and total off less than $675 completely INSTALLED!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

    • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
    • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
    • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
