I have a 3 year old rescued Pitbull/Labrador Mix and he’s just terrified of everything, I lost all hope of getting him trained but Jorge decided to take on the challenge and I’ve been very impressed with the little improvements I’m already seeing with him, we work on walking and focusing his attention to me and it’s going fantastic, Jorge takes the time to explain and teach you along the way for more lasting results, I think that’s wonderful, most dog trainers I’ve talked to wanted to take my dog for 3 weeks and then teach me everything he learned in an hour, I don’t learn that way. Jorge teaches me and my dog at the same time and takes the time to explain everything that he’s doing and why he is doing it! I’d definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a trainer, by far the best one we’ve talked to!

I just wanted to share our experience with Todd and South Orlando Dog Training. We had an incident with our dog Bella- she's terrified of skateboards. Usually we just avoid skateboards all together- but on a walk, a guy came up behind us on a hover board which makes no noise- and cut us off. Bella got scared and bit the guy- not doing major harm... but it easily could've ended very badly. The guy was apologetic and said he should've known better than to come up behind a dog like that. It was at that time that we knew we needed help- we NEVER want to relive that situation again. It's our job to protect her from herself... and we were beside ourselves. We didn't know what to do! We just recently relocated from Los Angeles to Orlando so we really didn't know anyone that could refer us to a dog trainer. I came across a business card from South Orlando Dog at a local coffee shop in Celebration and called to see what could be done. We've been working with Todd now for a few months and I have to say- it has made a HUGE difference. South Orlando Dog Training is all about positive reinforcement. We NEVER thought Bella could break this habit. Todd is so patient and so caring- you can tell he really loves what he does and he truly cares about his clients. I would say we hit the jackpot as far as dog trainers go. If you are even thinking of hiring a trainer for your dog- Todd is the way to go.

Monika has done a great job so far. She started off with a deep clean and oh my goodness, my house needed that! Now she is doing the routine bi-weekly cleans and it's made my life so much easier! She is great with our dog, who likes to get in everyone's business, especially when they are cleaning. Thanks Monika! I would recommend Monika's services.

Maureen is an excellent obedience trainer. When we had her train our unruly 8 month old lab his behavior improved dramatically. He is now able to follow several commands, and we are now able to take him practically everywhere. I would recommend Maureen for all of your dog training needs. She is an excellent trainer.

We've done a meet and greet with Madi and our two GSDs LOVE her! We are doing an evening this week for Madi to spend some time with the dogs before she house sits with them within the next couple of weeks. Madi was extremely professional and has a great energy about her plus she's just qualified in dog training so we are looking forward to hiring her for that too to help out with our fur-babies. Highly recommend.

TJ is an amazing trainer and educator. I have a Dutch Shepherd and if you know the breed then you know that they are stubborn, intelligent, and high energy (cousins to a Belgian Malinois). It is a dog that you must motivate and engage to properly train otherwise they will run all over you. My shepherd was rehomed 3 times due to his temperament e.g. he does not like to just sit around. I was lucky enough to be his forever home. I previously used two other trainers/facilities with mixed results. I was finally luck enough to meet TJ. During our initial talks, TJ asked what my expectations where and they were vast e.g. can you off leash train my dog in 2 weeks. TJ then took those expectations and turned them into reality. After our talks we put together a custom plan on how to train my K9. I left our meeting confident that TJ could handle my dog, however I did not know what to expect due to my previous experiences, I did not want to go through this process for a 4th time. TJ trained my K9 for two weeks straight while I was at work, and after work we trained together so that he could educate me on what was taught that day and what I needed to do and work on. After two weeks of training all I can say is WOW, the smile I had on my face was of pure amazement, it was worth every single dollar I spent ZERO regrets. TJ is the REAL deal. He trained my dog in basic obedience and then continued to teach more advanced obedience using a variety of techniques. He got my K9 to 90% off leash obedience and if you know what that takes it is unthinkable without using an E-Collar in such a short period of time on a teenage dog. Only in the final stages of training did we introduce an E-Collar as a pre-cautionary measure, TJ went over exactly how to use the E-Collar and the dos and donts. During the entire propose TJ educated me about every type of collar and training tool and how and when it should be used so that I would never incorrectly use a tool and regress my dogs behavior. Since then I continue to train with TJ on a regular basis and recently I signed up my K9 for his protection program which enforces continued obedience education as well as protection training which is customized on a per K9 basis. If youre looking for a one stop shop trainer no matter if you have a puppy, a teenage dog, or an adult dog regardless of breed this is the guy to talk to. He could make a French Bulldog a protection dog LOL. You really get what you pay for with TJ. On a 5-star rating I'd like to give her a hundred thousand, million billion! This is the best investment I will ever make in anything related to an animal that I have. It will bless our lives every day forward for as long as my dog lives and will bless me with the next dog I have in the next after that. In the life of my dog it will end up being a fraction of a penny a day investment. The scale quality of Vanessa's her training has forever changed my dog's life and my life. It's actually made the difference of being able to keep my beloved pet. I've worked with him daily since I got him at 10 weeks old, he's always been a handful and I've never been effective with my training. This summer things spiraled out of control when he got aggressive with a housemate and a neighbor. I was scared to have hum around children because he would get aggressive with them as well. I was looking into the options of finding a new home for him, which broke my heart but I was trying to do what was best for the dog for the children in the neighborhood and for myself. I thank God we found Vanessa and her family that took my dog in for 2 weeks socialized thim trained him, helped him discover he could trust people to be the alpha and he could relax into just being a dog and a puppy. He is much more happy and relaxed than I have ever seen him. He minds me almost perfectly. He's safe around children men and unexpected visitors to our house now! I did my homework and talked to multiple trainers before choosing Vanessa.. Most of them their rate was double or triple Vanessa's and I didn't always like their approach. The fact that my dog got to live in her home and be fully socialized with her family I think made an enormous difference. This is the highest review I've ever given to any kind of business at any time. I can't overstate how good she is.

There's not enough to say about our experience with Christian as our dog trainer. He has put so much time in with our dogs and they are doing great. We had quite an issue and change to deal with and he tackled them with no complaints or lack of professionalism. The dogs have learned so much and so have the parents! He is also a really great guy and we couldn't be more pleased. So much so that we hired him for an extension. Thanks Christian!!!!

My dog, Meiko, is a rescue dog with a troubled past. This has caused him to have extreme trust issues with new people and he also had severe leash aggression. After just two short weeks with Brandon, Meiko came back a changed dog. He came back with newly learned skills and was so much more confident in himself. It took some adjusting for him to listen to me as well as he did to Brandon during turnover, but with practice and patience, he’s come a long way. Brandon was great about sending pictures and updating me on Meiko’s progress, which made being away from him a bit easier. And he’s been a great resource now that Meiko’s back from training. If you’re struggling with your dog’s training and think there’s no hope for them, I suggest giving Mo’bedience a shot.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
