After my HVAC system went down I began the hunt for a reasonable and honest repair company. I lucked out and went with "Done Right" as it was an extremely reasonable rate. Juan the tech came out immediately and was very thorough and professional. He walked me through everything he did and explained it in great detail. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for an A/C repair company.

Derrick did a great job at a very reasonable price. Most important -- he recognized a major flaw in the current HVAC installation and proposed the best alternative solution, as confirmed by another expert.

Tony and his crew installed a brand new home cooling system. He and his team were very professional and worked diligently for a full 7 hours to remove the old system and replace it with the new system at a price nearly half that of other quotes in our area. I plan to call Tony for regular maintenance and any other HVAC situation we may run into in the future. They paid attention to all of the major and minor details including the aesthetics of the painting and plumbing of areas around the unit.

Cameron was great! I discussed what I wanted on Sunday evening and on Monday he was there to install a new HVAC (while others were asking 2 to 4 days). He delivered as promised! He was clear on his explanations, was punctual, very professional and offered a fair price for the equipment & service. Highly recommended to others that are in need of HVAC services.

Not sure how I missed writing a review for this amazing company! I would give 10 stars, out of 5, if I could. From the minute he showed up, he explained EXACTLY why I had been having the same issue (hired 3 other companies and NOT ONE took the time to HELP ME) This amazing man took the time to not only Fox my problem, but tell me WHY and what I can do to fix it. Unfortunately, the previous company, that installed the unit initially, did a crappy job and now I’m stuck with this mess. He even guided me through the legality of trying to sort through my rights with that. I’ll end up replacing my unit and I will ONLY use this company for any of my HVAC needs. He’s not only honest and fair, he’s a GOOD PERSON and that is hard to find these days.

We loved our experience with AdvantaClean! We found them through a random Google search and could not have been happier. John runs an incredible, honest business that you can trust. We knew he wasn't trying to sell us something that wasn't necessary. His crew worked extremely hard to do the job right, and we are so pleased with the result. We will definitely go back to AdvantaClean with any ducting/HVAC/mold issues that we have

Had a fantastic experience with this company! They came to the house very quickly to provide an estimate for my new unit. They provided the same products as other companies at a much better price to install. The installation was quick and efficient. They also cleaned the coils in my other unit, great job and great price. Everything is running great, extremely happy with their work.

Ben is very knowledgeable about HVAC's. He was the only Co. out of 6 Co's who bid on my job to personally visit with me & look at the system I had in order to make an accurate estimation of what we needed for the home. He does very detailed & high quality work. And he's on time! Highly recommend Neat Heat & Air. Attractive pricing on the best equipment. 1st Class. This guy will be successful. Thanks Ben!

I really enjoyed working with Chris from Sylvester's Air. He was very professional and provided different options for us. He went extra mile to explain how different HVAC systems operate and helped me to choose one which made sense for our house. He also tried to improve little things such as disconnect box, which went bad, without extra charge. He created a folder for us with all models numbers and warranty documents. Thank you Chris for outstanding job! I would highly recommend Sylvester's air to anyone!

Dusty is simply the best, he didn't try to sell anything that I didn't need and he actually tried to fix the issue even though I was originally interested in replacing the unit. He saved me money & frustration and he did a great job. I would hire him again next time I need anything related to HVAC and already recommended him to my friends.

I called in a Friday and was able to get an appointment the same day. Joseph was very nice and thorough with the job that he did. He even sent me pictures of all the stuff that came out of my dry vent. I asked him to give me a quote on air duct cleaning since he was already here, he was very happy to do so. I must say that the price is very reasonable. I will be doing business with him again when I am ready. I highly recommend this company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
