Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

Stephen took excellent product photos for our Ecommerce craft meat website. He came sharp, energetic, and creative to our 8am Sunday photoshoot which ended up going great. What I especially appreciate is the insights/advice Stephen brought to the session in terms of capturing the best possible photos of our product with the end user in mind. I’d recommend Stephen as a creative photographer for any project based on his work quality/skill/personality, and definitely plan on using him again in the near future.

Cynthia Black photographed our Dad's 90th Birthday luncheon and family reunion. She was fantastic on every level! Cynthia was punctual, has excellent equipment, and was friendly and unobtrusive while the party was going on. Her price was very reasonable, and the night of the party she uploaded a majority of the photos. Cynthia gave us access to her website so our guests can upload favorite photos without additional charges, Her work is thoughtful and creatively photographed. She is also sending me a CD. Everyone at the party appreciated her sweet manor, and Cynthia was able to take many family portraits which will mean a lot to our guests. I highly recommend Cynthia Black Photography. Cynthia is a consummate professional and first rate photographer - one of the best.

Mary Jane (founder of House of Simatos Creative Group) is a high quality, professional photographer. Her response time to my thumbtack search was lightning-quick, and she was more than willing to listen to all the details about the project that I wanted to do. Meeting up was easy, as she picked a convenient location for both of us. Mary Jane has a very friendly and bubbly personality that helps put you at ease regardless of whether you're a pro model or a 1st-time photo shoot "newbie." She is not some rookie photographer who just picked up photography as a hobby yesterday; she is an professional with tons of experience that will put you in a position to have great, natural & relaxed photos taken. Talking with Mary Jane is like interacting with a good friend from years past. Mary Jane is also so accommodating, she even drove me in her car to a different venue to continue taking more pictures. So if you want a professional to give you high quality photography service, then Mary Jane is the best choice; you can't go wrong with her.

George is the most wonderful photographer I met so far. He is very creative, I think he can take good pictures at wherever you choose. And he will teach you how to pose gesture. What impress me deeply is he borrow a beautiful kayak from passer as a stage property .he is really thinking of customer. And we got all the digital processing pics finally. His price is quite reasonable for all this service.

From the first communication with Nemi through receiving the digital photos within a day, Nemi was an absolute pleasure to work with. He was professional, thoughtful, kind, responsive, flexible and overall easy to work with. I'd say his personal strengths really shined during the photo shoot when he was working mainly with my two young boys who mostly do not want to be photographed. He made the experience as enjoyable and painless as possible, and found many natural ways to interact with them and engage them. He had a great eye for lighting and the scene backdrop, but then let the rest unfold as naturally as possible. He captured many wonderful images of my children being themselves, interacting with each other and with me, all with gorgeous and creative backdrops. He made all of us feel very comfortable and put us at ease, even though there was a camera pointed at us. We never felt rushed (except for the setting sun!) and by the end of the shoot, I felt we had a friend. I would highly recommend him for capturing your family in natural ways, working with children, and being responsive to what you are looking for.

I am sure there are a lot of talented photographers. But Carlos is the one who really cares. First of all he was the first one to accommodate to my time even though I needed him the next day. Everybody else was all about the exact time and price, Carlos cares about getting you the best pictures and will do the best and go an extra mile just to get the best results. He was very easy to work with, I felt very comfortable and pretty, he was advising me on poses and was telling me the best poses to look good. He really knows about lighting, I was really nicely surprised about the pictures we ended up with. May be other photographers are so confident that they can get done their quality job in an exact time, but I thing this is a creative process and you can’t say - in 5 min we are done. This is definitely the best deal I got- a great professional who cared about results and not the exact time and money. Carlos is going to be my guy that I will hire again.
