Bob came over and gave a great opening, getting our husky Cody to settle while he introduced his enrichment style of training which is different than traditional training methods. Bob had no problem pouring out his extensive knowledge in one session, notably some tips from dog training conferences he goes to and books he reads. He's up to date in the world of dog training, but also knows the history of training and how we, as dog owners, need to let go of certain negative training practices. Our husky responded to Bob's leadership immediately. We wanted Bob to help us with our dog's resource guarding behavior towards other dogs, how to walk on a lead and respond to us as the leaders. Bob showed us the ropes and gave us the knowledge and advice that we need to enrich our relationship with our husky and still get the training results we want. He brought up well researched alternatives for our dog activities that we would've never thought to do. He also pointed out behaviors of our dog that we didn't notice, such as disguised anxiety signals and how to resolve them. OVERALL, WE THINK BOB IS AWESOME AND WE'RE SO THANKFUL FOR HOW CHEAP HIS RATE IS!!! Absolutely worth it.

We highly recommend Joe and FL Academy of Canine Education. Joe is well educated in this field. He is honest, trustworthy and reliable. We hired Joe to work with us on our 2 year old Great Pyrenees. Joe expects dog owners to particpate fully in their dog's training, and if you do, it is worth every minute and every penny.

Eileen has worked on my horses and my dogs. All the animals love her! One of my horses injured himself in a pasture accident on his rear leg. He had a very deep cut. Eileen came to work on him once a month for several months. It really helped with his healing. You would never know how bad the injury really was except by the scar. I would recommend her to anyone. She is very helpful when your animals have health issues. She loves to share her knowledge.

Brandy is patient with my labs. They are older dogs who were in serious need of training. I had thought all hope was lost but not so! They are following directions, playing well together and I can open my door without a scene. This happened with simple commands and patience. Brandy had to teach US how to be dog parents and lead our dogs. Still a work in progress but we can see positive results. Thank you!!!!!

      About

I am the ideal pet owner who has enough generosity to help others. Dogs of all shapes and sizes are my specialty. Big or little, I can clean it up. I have insight on emotional behaviors and am an expert on healthy lifestyle.

      About

A balanced dog is a happy dog. To balance your dog, it needs not only care but long for what you educate, socialize and train. It's never too early or too late for you to teach your dog some tricks. The benefits you will gain will be invaluable as training serves as mental stimulation for the dog and often to the owner himself. It will help you meet your dog and strengthen the relationship you have with him. In addition, you'll be surprised at how quickly your dog can learn if you do it properly and positively.

      About

Hello. I'd love to watch and walk your animals! I am an animal lover and have two pets of my own (a cat and dog). I believe that pets take a big part of our lives and feel that they deserve the best care. I've taken a pet care course. This course taught me how to care, walk and feed animals properly. I also care for my own animals, and I used to walk my neighbor's 5 dogs from Delaware. Unfortunately, I moved away from the state and could no longer do it. My schedule is very flexible since I do online schooling. I also volunteer at Hope Hospice on Thursdays. Transportation is not an issue either. Please let me know if you feel that I meet your qualifications. Thank you!

      About

I provide dog walking two to four times a day, daily feeding and overall tasks related to dog care when owners are out of town or if they just need someone to walk their pet for half an hour or so.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

He has always been a smart loving dog, when we brought home baby he ignored her, now she is one and he is nervous around her, grawls when she engages is play and today it escalated to a bite but did not break skin... I think ive narrowed it down to the baby being in a walker and chasing the dog, and or just getting to close. Our dog is good with older kids around 4 &up. He is a labradoodle and always trys to please us and be a good dog.
