We had just purchased an ocean front condo in March of 2014 in Southwest Florida and knew right away that the interior needed a complete remodel to remove the dark, colorless interior and furnishings. It lacked character as well as color and we needed to find away to make the condo look bright and airy. We met Valerie and immediately fell in love with her attention to detail and her ability to put our thoughts and wishes into reality. We gave her a time frame and budget which she not only fulfilled but exceeded our expectations. In the end she brought the ocean and the sun into our unit by using a mixture of wall paint, sophisticated, but comfortable furniture, and wonderful accessories. We have bought and remodeled many properties but enjoyed this process the most as Valerie was so accommodating and conscious of making sure all of our needs we're met. We would highly recommend Valerie and her services for any type of design or decorator services.

Rosalinda led the design and refresh of our condo (in a midrise building) and also was hired as the designer to complete the $350,000 refresh of the common areas in the building. She did an exceptional job on both and we were very pleased with her access to vendors, the quality of the products recommended, and most importantly her design concepts and client service. I would highly recommend her to other homeowners or condo boards considering updating common areas. Gary Hudepohl ghudepohl@hudepohl.com

I'm so happy to reccommend Sarah Anderson to anyone who wants an excellent Designer. She has worked with me and my husband for over 12 years, on our last four homes. Her work is better than anyone I had ever used before and I use her even though I live in Dallas, Texas and she is now in Naples. We have painted rooms, purchased living room furniture, designed light fixtures for kitchen, lamp purchases, recovered existing furniture, updated framed mirrors with unique paint colors and so much more. She is also very good at arranging furniture and art arrangement for our walls. I had her meet us in Chicago when we moved there in 2003 so we could decide where to have the movers place the furniture. She was there when the movers arrived and it was so helpful. She is a woman of great honesty and integrity, keeps flawless records and is careful about every minute she uses taking care of any need you have (even the very small details are important to her). Her eye for color and design are amazing, yet she will give you lots of room to express your own ideas and desires. I just love working with her and highly recommend her to anyone who wants a home that is beautifully designed and decorated.

About

I handle all interior styles. The following is how it works: 1. Call or e-mail me to arrange for a no-charge initial consultation. I consider this to be a working meeting, so in the hour or hour-and-a-half time frame, I'll be giving you a lot of free ideas. During our meeting, we'll also be reviewing a binder of magazine photos that I've assembled. It's very telling to have you flip through the photos and inform me of your likes and dislikes. We'll then get a very immediate idea of your preferred style; that's a very important process in order to make our selections! If you also have magazine photos, that's a bonus. 2. I'll then get you a proposal for the entire project. In it, I list everything that it will take to design your home per our initial meeting. My fees are $115 per hour, but if we can determine a scope of work, I can quote you a flat fee. Any purchases that you make through my firm, I sell to you at my "net" or discounted rate, plus a fee of 20% to expedite that purchase. 3. Should we decide to work with each other, I then hit the ground running, and at our second meeting, I'll be giving you a full presentation with actual selections and examples of the design concepts that we discussed. After that, it's all about additional shopping, getting quotes, establishing a budget and assembling your interior. What clients find appealing about my system is that I design the entire project up-front, so that we maintain a cohesive look. When you make the purchase is of no consequence to me. However, I find that when the clients have the big picture and pricing, the purchasing/implementing process goes faster. Having an a-la-carte listing of all of the items lets you prioritize, and when funds become available, you know exactly what the next item to purchase is. I've worked with many clients for a number of years this way, carefully completing a designed project. I insist on having fun working with my clients because I'm not a design dictator. I don't care where the inspiration comes from (once, it came from UPS delivery personnel) as long as the selection excites you. Moreover, it's very important to interview as many designers as possible; you must click with that person. Please be sure to visit my website! Dave Yates

Our Condo Association hired 2 designers for the same multi-year exterior project. The project was to design a facelift for 34 year old condo buildings. The results were presented to the on-site homeowners who overwhelmingly and unanimously selected Josie's design. She provided recommendations on both material and color of replacement decking, handrails, paint, lighting, bldg numbers, and a beautiful option to update the exterior design of our buildings with stone accents. Her color presentation was "full sized" making selection easier. She provided electronic renderings that were shared with our snowbirds who had yet to return to Florida for the winter season. The condo Board was very impressed withe the quick turnaround and the extent of the design; down to the smallest of detail.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
