Maureen was very professional and great at what she does. My 2 dogs, one is 5 and the other 4 loves Maureen. My 2 puppies were able to sit, go down, stay and go up in the first session. She's great! I highly recommend her to anyone who needs a dog trainer.

David Ochoa, in my opinion, is probably one of the best dog trainers I have had the pleasure to work with. I have some physical limitations, that he was able to address & modify to my particular needs, while teaching me a different approach to train my 73 pound black lab mix named Churchill (he also helped me with my 13 pound dog, Winston). I had had several bad falls while walking Churchill. I desperately need help to stop Churchill lunging at barking aggressive dogs. David explained what I had to do, why I needed to think like an alpha canine, and how I was to implement the corrections with Churchill. David's knowledge about dogs is incredible; he truly understands what he is doing & his love of dogs is clearly seen. Just trust him and remember you must be the top dog in the house. I highly recommend David, as does my spouse! Already, after 2 days, I have gotten compliments on how good Churchill is behaving. David said I could call him at any time if I had any further questions about handling my dogs. He knows what he is doing!!

I am the owner of a very energetic Black Labrador. I knew that I had a dog with high energy and needed professional help with training my puppy. I found Martha Bernal through a friend at work who was happy with her dog training. Martha guided my puppy through ten sessions of puppy training (basic puppy obedience). I was very pleased with her obvious love of dogs and immediate results with each lesson. Martha has a gentle, effective approach to training dogs and my dog responded very well to her training sessions. The end result for me was that my Labrador became a lot more easy to manage because he understood the commands (requests) that I made such as "Come" "Sit" "Stay" "Leave it" and he also stopped jumping up on people. I enjoyed seeing my dog learn and am very happy with the dog training that Martha provided to my dog. He remembers everything she taught him and it makes our family happy to have a well trained big dog. I would recommend her highly to anyone considering a dog trainer.

It's super clear that Christine is an animal lover, and she's a genius with dogs. My Jack Russell, Biddy, had major anxiety which has led to major fear aggression and other behavioral issues. Biddy was such a stressed out animal that she didn't even know how to play! Way too anxious to chase after a ball or have fun with other dogs, she needed to be by my side at all times and literally followed me around the house everywhere I went. On top of that, she would bark and growl anytime anyone would come to my home. But not Christine. From the moment Christine met my dog, she knew exactly how to put Biddy at ease and command her respect. From the very first session, I saw positive results. During our sessions, she taught me many easy techniques for interacting with my dog to modify her behavior and lesson her anxiety. Over the past four years, I've taken Biddy to several trainers and behaviorists without accomplishing this type of lasting results. I am thoroughly impressed by Christine's skill with dogs and the service she provides. She actively listened as I described to her a ton of common scenarios that led to Biddy exhibiting problem behavior. She then created easy-to-follow, custom strategies for me to use to modify Biddy's behavior during specific situations that regularly arise. She is solution-oriented and extremely creative! Ultimately, Biddy is a happier dog now - less stressed and less anxious. And I can relax when I have friends over at my place because I don't need to repeatedly discipline Biddy or keep her locked in her crate and listen to her cry the whole time. Thank you, Chris!

Rose has been a pleasure to work with. Her knowledge and patience has exceeded my expectations. She is what a real dog trainer should be. I have spent a lot of money in the past with others with no end result and after just a short time I have already seen great results that continue even after she leaves our home. My Pitbull and Bull Dog love her and are growing to have much better manners. We are very grateful for the work she has put into the training and educating us to be better owners. Will recommend to friends and family without a doubt!

We have been using K-9 Coach for about 7 years. We had a new puppy after the death of one of our two dogs. The puppy was being very badly treated by the remaining dog and uncontrollable, probably in mourning. We used the K-9 Coach, Mike and got great results. We now have two very well trained dogs that are now therapy dogs at Hospice. We keep going to classes for socialism for our two dogs and on Saturday morning they sit at the door about 1/2 hour prior to our departure as they are so anxious to go to social class.cc

Michael Chapman of the Sit Means Sit - Saratoga dog training franchise kept Zoe (our 18 week old female standard poodle) for a two week 'board and train' experience. While there our Zoe was around other dogs and spent a great deal of time going places with Michael while learning to obey commands. The experience was positive for Zoe and for us! She is much easier to walk with and listens to and obeys many commands readily. We plan to continue to reinforce the training with classes that are available twice weekly at the Sit Means Sit facility and are enjoying online info that is made available. We are convinced that the process/system is the best, fastest manner to train a dog. And, are becoming vocal 'salespersons' for Sit Means Sit.

I had just gotten my nearly 1-year-old puppy and realized she was showing aggressive tendencies toward people and other animals in addition to submissive peeing. In a matter of weeks Brett has my dog on the right track. He was the only trainer we had a consultation with that started off showing genuine interest and care for my dog, as well as a energetic, take-control attitude. I would highly recommend Dog-Eze.

We brought a new puppy in to our home with two other dogs, an Aussie and a Lab. From day one they did not take to our new puppy. The lab was highly aggressive to her and also was becoming aggressive towards us. My husband said that was a big NO NO and I needed to get rid of our lab (3 yrs). I cried for a week before deciding maybe he was right - nothing was working and I was scared he would soon land a fatal bite to the puppy. My vet said he wished we had a dog whisperer like like Cesar Millan in our area. In desparation I went online and typed in Dog Whisperer asking God to give me a miracle. He did! I saw Will Thomas' web site and called him. He answered my call that night, spoke to me for over and hour, and we set up an appointment for that weekend. I am amazed at the results. It wasn't necessarily my dogs but me, and how I interacted with them. My husband balked when I first told him about the appointment saying he'd believe it when he saw it. He now believes and tells all our friends the story and change in our dogs. The lab and puppy are now best buddies, I am no longer stressed out and our home is much happier. He made a difference in just a few hours! Of course we had to follow through with the exercises he showed us for a couple weeks and now everything is second nature. -Riverview, FL

My husband, Ray and I rescued our five year old Bichon Frise, Phoebe and she immediately became very attached to me. We struggled with her skin conditions and food allergies. But she was most troubled when anyone would come near us or our house, barking (screaming) hysterically and nothing we could do would break her focus on the perceived danger, even picking her up and taking her to a back room of the house where she would continue barking loudly. She also snapped at people, especially children, who would move toward her to touch her. We were afraid to take her into situations where other people were gathered, such as our group camping outings. In desperation, we contacted Sam Ivy K9 Consultants, and our trainer, Enzo, began teaching us how to teach Phoebe. He was very patient with us, and within two visits, Phoebe stopped her frantic barking on our "STOP" command! Enzo continued to teach us how to give her the necessary commands that every dog should know: Sit, Stay, Down, Come ect. He also addressed her occasional night-time peeing in the house (she is very afraid of the dark so one of us has to go outside with her at night). Our fluffy Phoebe is so much better behaved now and we are very thankful that her training has made her a better, loving companion.

Lane has a true understanding of dogs. I Met lane walking around downtown Dunedin when my GSD (German Shepherd dog) was about 4 months old(about a year ago). We spoke of a mutual love for the breed and how both of our grandparents were involved in K9 training (my grandfather was a k9 judge). Lane never pushed a service our a sales pitch on me he asked me some questions about my GSD. I let him know I was working with a trainer but at times my puppy seemed to rule us. He then told me he moved to the area and is training dogs here and if i ever needed help to call him (His expertise includes guard dogs, behaviors, advance training). During the past year we still were working with the original trainer who was very good as well. Something was missing though and we both felt that we taught my GSD everything we could but, he had a hurdle. You see my GSD would see other dogs and become over stimulated and hard to control and this started at about 7 months old ( He is a very intelligent and high drive GSD who's a sweetheart but stubborn.). He would jump on everybody not listen and tend to be just a brat. With dogs though he would bark aggressively and scare other people even though he just wanted to play he also seemed to be scared of them. So my trainer said let's take some time off and figure out something later. My wife and I talked about how he just needed to age and mellow but I felt this could not wait. I also mentioned how we met Lane and we should call him, but we were feeling a little discouraged and felt it may be better to wait. The next afternoon on the way to the beach I saw Lane walking two dogs and told my wife it's a sign let's just call him and try it. Lane gave us a free consultation that was over an hour. He then gave us his feedback and gave us pricing that was very competitive to any big box store but his is one on one. The difference with Lane though has been dramatic already, he truly has a passion and love for his career. After just a few weeks my GSD has improved with not only his old training but new training as well. My GSD is walking better on leash, reacting less and learning to be a companion and not pushing to be an alpha. Lanes knowledge of reading a dog has been honed since a young age and it shows. My GSD not only loves to go to training but now acts as if Lane is part of the family. My GSD is calmer and now looks for me to command him. We are not perfect by any means (its only been 4 weeks) but I truly believe with Carters k9s my GSD will be perfect and a dog that my grandfather would adore. Ask about the tree stump!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
