I recently hired Judith Proctor, Eye of the Designer, to redecorate our home. Judy is extremely creative with a great “design eye” and from the moment my husband and I met her we knew she was the one who would transform our house into a home we would be proud of. Judy gets me and she gets my taste. I gave her my favorite color and decor style and she worked with me on all the design details (fabric, furniture, pricing and quality). She listened to my vision of what I wanted so it was very easy for us to come together and decide on the perfect rug, furniture, light fixture, accessories, accent wall material, paint color, etc. Judy took the time to understand my needs, helped to recommend and coordinate all the trades needed, returned all of my calls and emails promptly and did an amazing job of finding unique pieces for our space. Judy used some of our existing pieces and incorporated them into the design pulling our ideas together into a cohesive plan which gave our home a polished, magazine-cover look. She has impeccable taste, an excellent eye for color, and very creative ideas to make any home beautiful and outstanding which is exactly what she has done for our home and provided excellent service all the way through. I can’t thank her enough! Judy is a pleasure to work with and makes the whole experience relaxing and fun. For all your interior design needs, contact Judith Proctor, Eye of the Designer. You will be so glad you did! Marjorie Jackson, Coral Springs, Florida

My wife and I have been living in a 6000 sqft. house without proper window treatments, carpets or “grown up” furniture. Neither one of us really had an appreciation for design, nor what is could do for our home, but we do now! After meeting with us a few times, Mark presented an elegant, but very livable design plan that made our house a home. Also, since Mark is a certified LEED Accredited Professional, he installed LED lighting throughout the house, used no VOC paints, switched to on-demand hot water, automatically programming thermostats, touchless faucets. He also installed carpets and pads that were LEED compliant, they didn’t smell! We now have a house tailored to fit our lives and sustain our health. Beautiful and healthy is a great combination. We love to point out the details to our friends, thermostats that learn. Clean, tailored design that is elegant but not fussy. Our home is part of our family and we love it.

I asked Didier to help me re-decorate my house in a new style. He helped me choose new furnitures, artworks and other accessories that made my house look completely different. He also helped me arrange them in such a way that they would give off a nice feeling of comfort warmth. Overall it was better than what I imagined ! The prices were really affordable as well!

It has been a unique pleasure to work with Danielle Davidson and her staff at Unique Interior Designs 4U. They were extremely professional in their dealings with my wife and me in accomplishing the interior redesign of our large residence. Having resided in our home for a number of years we were ready for a refreshing new look. As you may appreciate, one accumulates a lot of stuff over the years which is hard to part with because of the thought that “we may sometimes in the future want to use the stuff”, such as excess furniture, furnishings, equipment, files or numerous other things now stored in the closets and garage. We really needed someone to be objective in asking us the “right questions” and offer creative solutions, before we made the decision to either sell, donate to charity, or throw into the dumpster. Their team designed and redesigned almost every nook and cranny in our home from reorganizing the master bedroom, living room, family room, dining room, kitchen, numerous closets and storage areas to the many other rooms and spaces in our home and garage. Particularly interesting and charming was the “Kids Fantasy Bedroom” created by Ms. Davidson. The end result was a refreshing and organized new look. Thank you, Danielle.

Andrea worked with us to decorate/design our completely empty beachfront apartment. That meant selecting everything from furniture to fabrics to painting to a new kitchen backsplash and cabinets. But she didn't stop there-the tile and furniture on our outdoor lanai created an additional (and often favorite) living space. We appreciate that Andrea listened to us and understood exactly what we wanted and then helped us do that within our budget. All this while we were often more than one thousand miles away! Within three months we enjoying our fully furnished space. She has excellent taste and offered ideas and solutions we didn't think of.

I have used Elite Stagers several times, I have always dealt with David. David used his expertise at each property to put a prospectus together that my customers felt very comfortable with. David has always been more than fair in all aspects, mainly with contracts and price. With one in particular property, he had left the furniture at the house for longer than the contracted date, free of charge, in order to help with the sale of the property. I would never use a different staging company, I have referred David to several other agents and I will keep doing so...there is a need for what he does and I wouldn't feel comfortable using anyone other than Elite Home Staging.

My husband and I would EXTREMELY HIGHLY recommend Hatley and Thompson. There AREN'T ENOUGH STARS IN THE SKY TO RATE THEM!!!! We hired Hatley and Thompson for our newly constructed home in Florida while still living up north. Everything was done by email and telephone. We didn't have to spend any money or time to travel to Florida at all during the process. The finished product is breathtaking!! Every room from ceiling to floor and wall to wall is absolutely stunning and beautifully put together. We could never have done this ourselves in several lifetimes. Their expertise and extremely good taste and recommendations are priceless. I would trust them to choose everything but they made sure the home suited our likes and wants and they worked tirelessly with us to achieve this and make it our own. They went above and beyond the scope of interior design. They educated us every step of the way and gave us background on even the smallest details of the project. They even went ahead and helped us eliminate an ant problem that they noticed and educated us on hurricanes, insurance, cleaning products, table coverings and much much more. Finally, they are honest, quality people of extremely high character and we are lucky to have met them and feel as we are now friends! We would use them over and over and over!!!!!!

We were pregnant, and I had a cranky toddler to move to a smaller bedroom as we were getting ready to make a new nursery. Glow Home Interiors was the best for us! I told Andrea I wanted something French and chic, and she really delivered. I loved her idea for old frames as wall decor, and I'm still not over the pinkish coral duvet she recommended to us. HIRE HER. Save yourself some crazy headaches.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
