I have 2 Chihuahuas, both about 5 years old. My male Chihuahua started showing fear aggression at about 1 year old. He was very territorial of his space and protective of me. He had a history of biting, and it got to the point where I was afraid to have anyone over or take him out to crowded places. It broke my heart because I didn't have the understanding and tools I needed to work with him. Several trainers I contacted basically told me it was too late to change his behavior. Thank goodness a friend of mine hired Jorge and recommended him. Once I started working with him, I knew I found the right trainer to help. We are almost finished with training, and my confidence has never been better. I know I can turn my dog's behavior around, and I know I can take him anywhere. Thank you Jorge for having faith in my dog when no one else would!!!

Was very helpful and great rate. Very nice and polite. Put up with my goofy Newfoundland puppy who kept trying to help and steal his tools. Going to use again for another project! Highly recommended!

Laura trained my not-so-friendly mixed breed through several sessions. I was surprised at the ease my dog learned basic behavior with her. Laura also taught me some new tricks - for training and altering behaviors my dog had already adopted. With continued sessions we learned some fun stuff plus advanced behavior modifications. I was extremely pleased, and after nearly a year, continue to be thrilled with her techniques and vast knowledge of dogs and their innate behaviors. I learned a lot about my dog and how to handle some difficult situations. Will recommend and use Laura for all my dog training and home care when out of town. Allison

Maureen is an excellent obedience trainer. When we had her train our unruly 8 month old lab his behavior improved dramatically. He is now able to follow several commands, and we are now able to take him practically everywhere. I would recommend Maureen for all of your dog training needs. She is an excellent trainer.

Cyndi provided care for Pippi, my elderly miniature dachshund. She was fantastic to work with and Pippi loved her very much. Cyndi did an excellent job of making care that Pippi had not only her basic needs met, but also a great deal of love and affection. I would trust her to care for any of my animals if she still lived in Iowa. Cyndi is an excellent care person.

On a 5-star rating I'd like to give her a hundred thousand, million billion! This is the best investment I will ever make in anything related to an animal that I have. It will bless our lives every day forward for as long as my dog lives and will bless me with the next dog I have in the next after that. In the life of my dog it will end up being a fraction of a penny a day investment. The scale quality of Vanessa's her training has forever changed my dog's life and my life. It's actually made the difference of being able to keep my beloved pet. I've worked with him daily since I got him at 10 weeks old, he's always been a handful and I've never been effective with my training. This summer things spiraled out of control when he got aggressive with a housemate and a neighbor. I was scared to have hum around children because he would get aggressive with them as well. I was looking into the options of finding a new home for him, which broke my heart but I was trying to do what was best for the dog for the children in the neighborhood and for myself. I thank God we found Vanessa and her family that took my dog in for 2 weeks socialized thim trained him, helped him discover he could trust people to be the alpha and he could relax into just being a dog and a puppy. He is much more happy and relaxed than I have ever seen him. He minds me almost perfectly. He's safe around children men and unexpected visitors to our house now! I did my homework and talked to multiple trainers before choosing Vanessa.. Most of them their rate was double or triple Vanessa's and I didn't always like their approach. The fact that my dog got to live in her home and be fully socialized with her family I think made an enormous difference. This is the highest review I've ever given to any kind of business at any time. I can't overstate how good she is.

I have known Carol Gomes for 40 years and in that time she has rescued more animals that I could count. Carol has always loved animals and she takes great care of them. She took care of my daughters dog when my daughter didn't have a place for her. I found two little dog that needed a home and Carol took them in and gave them all the love she had, no questions asked. She would be a great Nanny.

I've known Diana for over 30 years. In those years, I have watched her train many horses and dogs. Now she has been training my lab which I rescued. It was pulling and barking at others as we walked. To this day, Champ walks by my side and does not bark at other people. Diana is patient and respects what she loves to do, and that is taking care of animals.

I have had the opportunity to observe Clara & Barry while training their newest service dog. Sabrina is a beautiful, intelligent puppy and has learned so much already. Clara & Barry train with love & rewards and Sabrina is eager to learn. She already knows lots of commands, like come, stay, down, shake, sit and roll over and she's also learning to go to the door when she wants out. Clara & Barry make a great team and someone will be so lucky to get one of their service dogs Dee O

My experience using My Pet BOO pet sitting was beyond my expectations. I love the fact that I had a veterinary technician watching my dog while I was away. You never expect anything medical to happen while you are gone but the peace of mind this provided me was priceless! Lydia was wonderful and my lab, Sadie, just loved her. You could really tell from Sadie's reaction when they met that Lydia loves animals and they know it! I will always use My Pet BOO in the future and highly recommend you do too.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

          • What type of training methods do you use?
          • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
          • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
