Carl did a great job installing my new kitchen light. He even made a recommendation for a new faucet that I plan to install soon. I will definitely use his services again in the future.

Paul did a great job, replacing the screen from the screened in porch and installing a new door to the porch. He was on time and the quality of his work was really professional. Would recommend Paul.

Gentle Hands is the best, hands down!!! I had just bought a home and before moving in I needed some work done - laying new flooring, moving washer/dryer plumbing, vents, outlets, installing crown molding, installing tile molding, repairing dry wall, building shelves, changing out lights and fans, building cornices and hanging blinds, and more. They hit the trifecta - responded and completed the work quickly, they were skilled at their work and did a fantastic job on everything ,and the price way very fair. In addition, they provided really good design suggestions and cleaned up after themselves. They were a pleasure to work with in my home and I would not hesitate to use them again. These guys are the guys to call!

Jorge is my Go-To Carpenter. His company rescued our beleaguered renovation job to our historic home - structural and finish carpentry, complete bathroom remod, stunning crown moulding. Always punctual, true to his word, fair & accurate estimates. He just finished some architectural columns for the front porch that are beautiful.

Jimmy added 400 square feet to my existing wood deck, he also added stairs and rails to go out into the back yard. The addition was seamless and he even went around an existing tree in a very aesthetically pleasing way. The price was fair and the work quality was excellent. I recommended him to a friend that had to add rails and steps to her deck and she was equally pleased with the work.

Had Target Home Repair tear down and replace an existing deck on our property. He started the next day and two days later, the rickety old deck had disappeared and in its place was a very sharp, neat, clean, and all around nice, new deck. Am very happy with the work and how quickly it was done.

Michael is a troubleshooter. He really listens and does the job you want at a very fair price. He did deck and fence repair for me. He shared the job situation as he uncovered deck planks and found problems. There were no surprises. I am pleased and will certainly use Tcbimprovements for future projects.

I hired Jason to replace the decking on my existing deck and add stairs that wrapped around 2 of the sides. He completed the work within a week and kept me up-to-date on his progress. The job was completed on budget, professionally and he went above and beyond with the overall design and quality of the work. I would recommend him to anyone looking to get work done to their house.

I had an odd painting project, the inside of a wooden 70 year old garage that had never been painted. There were some particular challenges, and Aleksandr stepped up to handle everything necessary to resolve the issues and complete the job well. He was very careful to protect the elements that were not to be painted, and took the time necessary to deliver a good job. If you have a painting project, I would recommend him. Next Year we plan to repaint our home interior, and I plan to call Aleksandr.

TJ Cabinetry was referred to me by a friend. As I live out of the area and have a home that is a rental property in the Orlando area, I needed someone that could work with me from a distance and also someone that I could trust. I couldn't be happier with the final product! I had ordered kitchen cabinet doors from a different company and had 4 doors which did not fit. TJ Cabinetry made things happen and fixed the problem quickly! I also had my kitchen counters resurfaced and they look awesome! TJ Cabinetry is flexible and will offer solutions to problems that may occur and get the job done! The crew doing the work was friendly and a pleasure to have. They definitely go the extra mile to make their customer happy! I would definitely hire TJ Cabinetry again and would happily refer them to anyone I know! GREAT JOB!!

Overall experience was excellent. We wanted quartz countertops, but didn't want to spend a fortune. L & S had the best prices by a long shot. Their square foot price was close to other contractors, but they didn't have any "additional" fees like everyone else. Stephen came out to give us a quote and was very professional. He also showed up on time....unlike some other contractors. Watching him make the template was an interesting experience, I've always wandered how they do make the templates. We waited 5 days for the countertops to get made and then Stephen returned with another installer and they installed our Mountain Mist Silestone countertops. It took most of the day for them to install everything, but it was well worth it. My wife and I are so happy with our new countertops and we're very happy that we went with L & S for this project. After using contractors in the past, this was by far the best experience we've had.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
