Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

This was the worst experience I have ever had with movers. When you're dealing with all the stress of moving out, having someone cancel on you with 2 hours of anticipation over text was the most unprofessional and pathetic excuse for a moving company. Horrible!

I contacted Apika USA Movers and spoke to Anastasia. She took an inventory on the phone and gave me a quote. She then scheduled a visit to document the items and confirmed the price. She was professional and very nice to work with. The movers came 20 min early and Alex introduced himself and they went to work, wrapping everything in blankets and carrying it out the door. Total professionals and removed the stress from moving. The next time we move there is only one moving company I will call. Apika...the best.

Crosstown Moving handled a small move for me today. James and his co-worker responded immediately, gave me a great price quote, picked up and moved the item safely and FAST. Miami is full of unprofessional people and companies. Crosstown, however, was the BEST company o have ever used in this city. Their truck is beautiful and available for small or large moves. I HIGHLY recommend Crosstown.

J & A Ultimate moving service are by far the best movers I ever hired. I had to work on the day of move. I have a wife who is 8months pregnant and she said they where the most professional, hard working, efficient company she has ever worked with. We had a issue with getting the couches in and out of the apartments. They took the doors of the hinges and put them back, free of charge. If there was a problem they had a solution for the issue. Affordable, Efficient, Reliable. For any moving needs don't waste your time with other companies. J & A Ultimate moving is the only company you will need.

Collin was wonderful to work with, fast and packing efficient! We had a very last minute move request for a couple of hours and he responded immediately and was on his way! Then within 2 hours we were fully moved out and into our new location, we highly recommend Collin and his team and will be using them again on our next move!

Very good. Used them for a local move. Punctual. Good value for price. Friendly movers. However they broke a leg on a table. They offered to have someone come over and fix it but that never happened. That left a bad taste because everything else was great.

Very good move from apartment into storage. Prompt, hard-working, taking care, coordinated. Very nice people- Roberto with Abner and Anthony. Focused workers. I appreciated every minute of this hard work. Roberto said "Don't worry- we'll take care of everything.", and they did. I recommend the company because of the reservation experience and because of the move. Good customer service.

Great experience! I love a company that does what they say they are going to do. Corey and Alex arrived early and did a great job! They were total professionals and worked quickly and carefully - and the price was great! We will definitely be using Drop A Truck again! As a matter of fact, we're moving my dad from Jupiter to Boca in the next few weeks and will be using them for that move. Highly recommend!

Wow, totally and completely impressed with everything from the beginning communications to the final outcome! He was timely, polite, friendly, professional, and provided pictures and documentation throughout the whole process. Will not even consider hiring anyone else next time I need a moving company!!

They were dishonest. Quoted me $375 For moving a one bedroom apt 1/8th mile away. They took forever, wrapped soft mattresses in bubble wrap, and then tried to hold my TV ransom for about $600. Since I didn't trust them with my credit card, I had to go to a nearby bank to get the remaining price in cash. I had a screaming match with "Frank" on the phone after he reneged on the global deal and started threatening legal action. Luckily I'm a lawyer and he's just a dishonest crook. You can use my name.

Hired them for a moving job on 11/8. Quoted 75/hr for 2 men. They sent me 1 man and a very inexperienced teenager who stood around most of the time and only took direction from the other guy (who was really great). So the job ended up taking way more time cause I had 1 1/2 men. I still have a bed and a table that wasnt put together cause they were taking too long. Teenager who said he was tired said he normally doesn't work there and just started helping out. What got me upset was when I called the customer service to explain to them my frustration the girl on the phone told me I'm upset cause I didnt want to pay and I'm on a discounted rate, normal rate is $90 per hr. (So why send a quote for $75?) I didnt ask for a discounted rate. I have no problem in paying. The problem I have is that sent me an experience teenager to do a mans job. She was very rude. I will never use or recommend this company.
