My experience with Kristy was definitely once in a life time opportunity.. I came to her broken, lost, triggered, and hopeless. I could no longer manage my life or my mental health any longer. (It’s so hard to find a good therapist, I’ve seen many!) At the time I went to see her I was very closed minded to the idea until I got to see for myself how much she truly cared to help change my life. She was the first therapist I had who actually put in the dedication to help me as a person.. Not only was she a great therapist, but an amazing life coach. She truly cared and that means a lot! Through the months I saw her we did deep digging into my trauma so I could be released from everything I struggled with internally.. generalized anxiety, ptsd, depression etc. She helped me gain my life back and gave me the proper tools to be able to function on a daily basis. Forever am I grateful to her.

Rose Serenity Wellness Center, was very helpful to me. I saw therapist Guerline who assist me with marriage counseling, we had trust isses, financial problems, communication problem, I felt like my spouse didn't value my opinion, we were contanstly combative with each other ,things were getting worse especially we have children involved. I was very angry to the point I didn't think therapy would work, but I met up with Guerline, I was able to express myself independently, my mate was able to talk about his prospective ,which open up the line of communication. It's been about one month and things are great, we've overcome every challenges as a married couple. Guerline is wonderful see her she can help.

I would never be where I am today if it wasn't for Janis Garrido. I started training with Janis about two years ago and from day one she made such a strong impact in my life. Janis is not only an amazing fitness and health coach, but she is also my inspiration. You have changed me for the better, physically and mentally and I can't thank you enough for that. You motivate me everyday to push harder and be better then the person I was the day before and thats what you need to succeed in the fitness industry. Thank you so much Janis for making my dreams come true and believing in me every step of the way!

A life changing experience is what I received, but didn't initially think or know I needed. That was until I had the opportunity to have a session with my Life Coach- Debbie. Before the session I was a relatively outwardly positive person, however on the inside I battled with maintaining this optimistic disposition because I thought it was my only option. Looking back to the person who I was, I could see that I would subconsciously suppress my feelings, and neglect being put first because I felt I should always be considerate of others before myself. So I went around spreading my positivity, but ultimately avoiding how I felt about the silent struggles I faced. Before my session with Debbie, no one recognized my angst, or my need to be heard and pushed to put myself and my desires first. Of course I was hesitant, and skeptical about opening up about how I felt initially, but Debbie reassured me that everything discussed between her and I would be in complete confidence. That was the hardest part for me- opening up, sharing, and in my eyes being ungrateful just for even addressing the fact that I was suffering and unhappy. The life coach experience with Debbie made me very emotional and I poured out a lot of hurt that was bottled inside me. Fast forward to today I'm a completely changed person. My mental and physical health has improved, I've become more active engaging in things that are important to me, and I'm able to effectively communicate my feelings to others in regards to how it makes me feel. Before I felt I had no choice but to be positive but now I'm truly positive and happy about the direction my life is in. I was able implement the lessons gained from this experience with Debbie into my everyday life and continue to do so. Trust the process, it will do wonders for your life!

Romi's life coaching and therapy sessions were not only the highlight of my week but also helped me to gain amazing insight in to my own personal, business, and relationship problems. I came to her at a dark time in my life and I couldn't see any way out of the darkness. Not only was she a friend but she was also a professional whom I trusted with my darkest secrets and my mental health and wellbeing. She saved my marriage, helped me work through numerous health and addictions, and showed me it was okay to wear my heart on my sleeve. I have cried, laughed, and made a life long friend and confidante in Romi. Her services are exclusive and extremely efficient. She is reliable, loyal, always on time, and I am so lucky to have worked with her. Highly recommended. Elite service.

About

A New Day Therapeutic Services provides mental health and substance abuse services for the community of South Florida. Dan Schimmel, LCSW, CAP is an experienced psychotherapist who specializes in working with individuals dealing with issues related to substance abuse and mental health. A New Day Therapeutic was founded to assist individuals and their families to overcome alcoholism, addiction, co-occurring disorders, and the mental health challenges they sometimes face. The center's philosophy is based upon the concept of spirit, mind, and body rather than the medical model that focuses on pathology or the person's problems. Spirit, mind, and body is an approach which enables an individual to heal and advance in their recovery while dealing with their particular challenges. This means not only eliminating the undesired behavior/s or feeling/s, but also healing from the pain the experience has caused. Connecting to spirituality facilitates the healing and allows the state of surrender to begin. This therapeutic direction is Dan's specialty and has been proven effective in all service modalities offered.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
