Where do I start? My husband and I tried to demo 1754 square of tile in our new house to save us money. By doing that, we put a lot of holes in the floor, causing us to have to level it. We knew at that point that we needed to bring in a professional and got nearly 10 people to quote us. It was one of the most stressful experiences because each person came in and told us how bad it was and quoted us various amounts of a lot more money than we had planned for. Ehren came in and he was just a cool, relaxed guy, which doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is. He wasn't the cheapest quote, but he worked with us and our budget. In the end he was the best price for the outstanding quality of work we received. We are so glad we picked Ehren. He and Paul did a fantastic job. First, they leveled the floor, then they laid wood look tile throughout the house. I have really high standards, and they even exceeded my expectations! As a way to save money, Ehren also taught my husband how to level and tile, which was great. Ehren and Paul not only did a great job, but they're great guys to have around. They are positive, upbeat and care about their customers. Dealing with our first home and first renovation, we've figured out that that's not too easy to come by. They even installed our toilets as a housewarming gift! Ryan and I plan to hire them for everything we need in the future. They'll be getting a call from us soon to do our backsplash. Thanks so much Ehren and Paul!

I asked Mark to remodel my mom's bathroom to make it handicap accessible. His plans are excellent. I had to put the job on hold for a few days as some health issues have come up. Will definitely be having Mark do more jobs for my family.

DMG did an outstanding job on our full-house renovation! It was a pleasure to have them in our home. Even as we traveled between cities, DMG gave us a peace of mind, enabling us to leave the job in their hands. We were able to move into our beautiful “new” home on schedule & are enjoying it now to the fullest! Looking forward to working with them in the future… Ken & Rachel R.

I contacted Mr. Parrish for a pressure washing job. What I got was an outstanding young man who could do much more then just pressure washing! The pressure washing job included the house, patios, driveway and sidewalk. The job was done perfectly and at the right price! I then hired him right on the spot, to do painting of the garage floor and patios. I also hired him to fix my rock bed boarder. Mr. Parrish is my "go to" guy for any "handi man" projects! He does an excellent job at the right price!!

We contracted New Leaf construction to enclose and integrate seamlessly a 200 sq ft screened porch to our home. We asked them to accomplish this in concert with installation of a new pool and screen enclosure contracted to an independent pool company. The entire project took approx. 8 weeks. The project was accomplished almost exactly as outlined by the project manager, Scott Blunk, with regards to schedule, process and budget. New Leaf was also ready and willing to address changes in project detail along the way, and were always available to answer questions and allay concerns as the project progressed. in fact, there was no way to thank the New Leaf team properly for the care they showed for our home during this project. They consistently went above and beyond and were patient and professional throughout the process in a way that exceeded all of our expectations. The final result also exceeded our expectations both in quality of work and realization of our vision, and has been a source of pride and enjoyment for us since its completion. We would enthusiastically recommend New Leaf to anyone looking to have home renovation work done by an honest, capable and caring team, and New Leaf would be our first call if we are every in need of additional renovation services for our home.

I had some wood rot to the faucet on my roof. Called Reed's Renovation and Repair to get an estimate. He showed up on time and listened to my needs and then looked everything over very throughly and gave me a good price for the repair. After having other contractors look at the work I went with Reed's Renovation and Repair due to the professionalism that Mr Reed showed at our first meeting. He showed up early on the day of the job and did a great job. I will definitely call Reed's Renovation and Repair again for any of my home remodeling needs.

We love the new kitchen! Jeff took time to listen to us and, as a result, we got exactly what we wanted. I wish it was faster, but we are responsible as well, taking too long to make necessary selections. Overall, great experience!

I found out about Sapps Services from a friend of mine, and his work was nothing less than professional. Willie pressure washed my house and patched up a few holes that were in my garage wall. I have a pond in my backyard so there's always green algae on the sides and back of my house. I wish that I could display a picture! The algae was completely gone and he didn't take long at all. The holes that were in the garage were from shelves that had fallen. After he was done I couldn't tell that the holes were ever there. I'm definitely recommending him to everyone I know. Fast, professional, and courteous. ?

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
