It was Tammy that met us for the first time and spent 45 minutes explaining how she got this position, and asked about what we expected. She and our German Shepherd got along great. We needed her to come mid-mornings to get our energetic 6 year old, out for a walk for two weeks. She often drove him to the park for his walk. She sent us pics every day and assured us all was going well. I believe Tammy appreciated our preparation. We had a key made for her, she was aware that she was to feed him, but if she didn't sit with him he may not eat it. She had our vets name and phone number. I needed her to come walk our boy again this week and she was very willing to come by.

Steph came to my house and groomed my pet in the driveway. This was my 1st experience with a mobile pet spa. I was a bit concerned that she use cold tap water for bath. My furry friend came out clean and her happy self!

I was very pleased with Rachel and her attention to my two cats who require daily medication. She came daily around the same time and texted me either during or after the time she was at my house with either questions or a status update on my cats. I have hired her again for my next trip and highly recommend her. Thank you Rachel!

Adrienne is awesome! She has taken such great care of my 2 dogs and they love her. I can tell they enjoy her company and look forward to her visits and walks. Adrienne leaves me detailed notes about her time with my 2 dogs, and how they're doing. She is always available and since I work crazy long hours, it's comforting to know she'll be there to take care of my dogs when I can't. I highly recommend her and Aarff Pet Sitting.

Alana Devers was the house and petsitter for me this summer. I have a difficult rescue dog, boxer pit mix, and a yorkie. She handled my dogs like the professional is expected. As a bonus, my house was nice and clean when I returned home! I highly recommend her.

I had Sit Pretty Pet sitting take care of my dog for about a week. They did a wonderful job with her. She doesn't always warm up to people until she's known them for a long time but she warmed up to them very fast. She was fed well and given a bath and just in general they took very good care of my baby. I would highly recommend them to everybody.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

How do I find a reliable house sitter?

House sitting can help keep your home safe and well cared for so you can be worry-free while you’re away for work or play. There are several steps you can take to make sure you hire a trustworthy house sitter and do your part to be a responsible host. One of the best ways to ensure a safe home is to hire a professional house sitter. Here are some key points to look for when hiring a house sitter:

        • Reviews and referrals: When searching for a house sitter, always read reviews. Previous experiences will indicate how the house sitter will care for your home while you’re away.
        • Contract: Sign a clearly written contract outlining services to be provided (e.g., mail in each day by 5 p.m.), the daily rate you are paying, and how long the services will be provided. You can also include any agreed-upon house rules in the written contract.
        • Your part: Leave important phone numbers (vet, emergency contact, etc.) and information on where to find emergency items like the circuit breaker and the fire extinguisher, and have a credit card on file with the veterinarian in case of emergencies if the house sitter is watching your pets.
