Joe has provided various services for me as home-owner over the last few years...he built a new screen door; replaced wooden entry steps (this was a considerable task--15 steps, old ones removed and new precisely fitted to existing railings); removed insulation from basement ceiling; obtained and spread 100 bales of pine straw; cut and edged lawn (large); weeded plant beds; hauled trash to landfill--he was always top notch--on time, conscientious, very skilled (he is a master carpentry craftsman), and extremely courteous. I especially appreciate his honesty and the way he discusses upfront and during on the project specifics, making sure I understand pertinent issues.

Contracted Atlantic Woodworks to put hardwood floors in our foyer, living and dining rooms, cabana bath and master bedroom. He took out the carpet and tile and prepped the floors for the hardwood. We have a curved staircase and he meticulously cut the wood to curve around the base of the stairs. We didn’t need to put molding around it . . .it looks like the floors were always there. Did a beautiful job!! (and I am very picky!). Arrived on time, was very careful with our furnishings and keeping the surrounding areas clean. We just love our new floors. Couldn’t ask for a better end product or person to work with. Highly recommend Atlantic Woodworks and Tim Mortimer.

I am a Realtor in St Augustine. Jorge was prompt in contacting the new owner of the home and meeting me and the owner for an estimate. The work was 10 or so post-closing repairs on a very nice home in downtown St Augustine. Jorge did all the various repairs and replacements on the home to the owner's satisfaction at a competitive price and in a timely fashion. Jorge is the first person I think of for home repairs, but I've seen pictures of his craftsmanship with building homes, installing kitchens, bathrooms, floors, building custom arbors and amazing wood working. His abilty to handle so many different tasks makes him a one-stop-shop.

Always on time and very hard worker very fair price with no surprises and trustworthy. I highly recommend. You won't be disappointed. He can design and complete all phases of a project or can follow your instructions to a tee. Great person and personality & enjoys what he does. I only wish he would move to S Florida. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
