I was so very lucky to have found Carolyn to look after my cat while I was away. She did an excellent job and was even able to win over my very stubborn kitty. She kept in touch with me every step of the way, sending me pictures and updates on my cat. She is a true animal lover, and I couldn't have found a better caretaker than her for my cat.

It was our first time using a pet sitter to stay overnight in our home and Madi made us feel extremely comfortable. You could immediately tell that she has a strong love of animals and our dog, Gracie, was drawn to her right away. Madi is extremely professional and we would highly recommend her to anyone seeking a trustworthy pet sitter.

Alison took care of our 2 cats and 1 rabbit while we were away for 5 weeks. She provided a calm and quiet atmosphere for them. She took special care to figure out how best to get the cats to eat a supplement for kidney disease. She was always available for an update and spent lots of time with the animals. In the same situation I would certainly have her back!

I met Vickie about 20 years ago when I was trying to show my first wire fox terrier in obedience. Before I met Vickie we were going no where fast. Vickie was patient and knowledgable. This was my novice A dog and she went on to earn her UD all due to Vickie's excellent guidance. The most valuable thing Vikcie helped me with was getting a reliable recall on my dog. That is a life saving skill and I can't thank Vickie enough. Plus how nice is it to stand at your front door greeting visitors with the door wide open and know that your dog isn't going to run out the door or jump all over people. Life skills are as important to me as obedience skills and Vickie helped me so much to make this happen. I am now on my third wire fox terrier.

Had lots of patience and walked us through each step. We saw immediate progress after one training session with homework to do on a weekly behavior plan.

Jee is an AMAZING dog trainer. More like a dog whisperer! I called Jee to help with Cookie, our first rescue dog, who had aggressive behavior and leash pulling. Within one home visit, she already had Cookie walking calmly on the leash. After a full day with Jee, Cookie was soooo much better behaved. When my son got deployed a couple of months ago, his 9 month old puppy, Mila, came to live with us. Mila was attacking the elder dog in the house (Ella) daily over food and toys. Mila spent three weeks at Jee's Board & Train Program, and came back a MUCH better behaved pup! Jee brought Mila over a few times during the Board & Train session to work with Mila and Ella together. No more attacks! In fact, Mila will now turn her head away from Ella when she walks by, avoiding a confrontation...when Mila used to instigate the confrontations! We can now enjoy all the dogs in the house, without having to worry about any fights...all thanks to Jee!

I had a great experience with Billie at Tricks and Treats Dog Training. I have a one year dog who I've been struggling with to get her to listen and follow the most basic of commands. Billie accurately assessed her behavior and personality then showed me how to properly motivate her and get her engaged in learning. I was very impressed! I also have a six year dog who is highly trained, we do agility, nosework, and have the Advanced Canine Good Citizen. This dog needed a new challenge, however, and I was at a complete loss on how to progress her training. Billie showed me some amazing new things and my dog is absolutely loving the challenge! I recommend her for all levels/types of training, with dogs both young and old.

Ellie started working with my puppy Charlie when he was only 2 months old. If you think it's impossible to get a small energetic puppy to sit, stay, come, look at me, along with several other important commands, you are wrong. Ellie amazed me at how fast Charlie caught on and obeyed her and then me. She not only trains your dog but trains the owner. She will give you one-on-one time, answering any questions you have about any behavior issues or potty training. All of her techniques work and it's all through positive reinforcement, not punishment. Potty training was such a breeze with her methods. After training with Ellie, I can take Charlie with me anywhere. I always get compliments on how obedient and well behaved he is. Charlie loved Ellie's classes so much that as soon as we would pull into the parking lot he would get so excited and then run to her when he saw her, giving her kisses. Charlie and I both miss Ellie and are sad his training classes are over. I honestly can't recommend Ellie enough, she is absolutely amazing and you won't regret getting her help. The pictures I've included are Charlie sitting and looking at me on command during Ellie's training, his graduation picture from her program and Charlie today, still behaving so wonderfully.

Alania is one of the most caring, professional individuals I've ever met. She has a love for animals, and makes sure that their needs are always priority. She watched my dog Jax for 2 weeks while I was away on a business trip. She facetimed with me everyday to ensure I could see Jax. Her professionalism is beyond compare!

        About

I have worked as a veterinary technician for 10 years and love to work with animals. I have 1 dog and 3 cats of my own. What started as a hobby stayed with me until I chose to further my education into a career. I have recently relocated to Sebastian from Philadelphia and look forward to working with this community.

        About

I like to relate to each individual. I train & treat your dogs like they were my own. You'll never have to question my intentions or anything else. True training happens between the owner and the dog, not the trainer and the dog. I love to be able to help people. Take a walk in the park knowing that poor old Fido isn't going to chase that dog or try to pee on somebody's leg. It's a good feeling being able to show off our animals. I promise after working with me, you'll have that dog you can brag to your friends about!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
