I am first-time Thumbtack user and Angel and Cristina have been by far my best experience using a contractor EVER. I got laminate, tile and carpet removed, then luxury vinyl installed in the whole apartment. Super responsive, very competitive prices, and super punctual, quick and professional. Great communication. I am very happy with my new flooring and will 100% vouch for their work any day.

Gabriel at Right Step Flooring did an outstanding job and was very professional to deal with. I hired another company (Pro Wood Flooring) through Thumbstack to install 700 sq.ft of flooring at a house we purchased. Pro Wood flooring was a nightmare to deal with and delayed our project to the point, where I had to postpone our move in date. Since we had to leave our old rental house and could not delay the project any more, I hired Right step flooring (something we should have done at the beginning) to come and finish the job. Gabriel from right step came to work the next day and finished installing almost 400 sq.ft of flooring in one day. We will install Porcelain tiles in our family/living room after few months and would hire Right step flooring for that.

We are incredibly grateful to Eric and his partner Nick. They were professional, on time, and treated my home with respect. They cleaned as they went along, and worked quickly. Our tile installation only took 2 days plus one additional afternoon to put on some final touches. Overall, we are very happy with the job done.

Mark did an excellent job on the install of our crown molding. Mark is very professional, tactful, and paid great attention to the detail of the finishing of the crown molding after the install was done. Mark also made sure that the area where he made cuts was cleaned out before leaving. A true professional by all accounts. He was fair on his price, and not trying to rip me off like the other installers on this app. Other installers were charging twice to almost three times the quote Mark gave me. I would recommend Mark, and definitely utilize his services for future projects!

I can’t say enough amazing things about Leonel and his assistant, they were amazing!!!I originally called Leo to give me an estimate on a shiplap fireplace. This was a difficult task because it was to be done over a an existing 1937 keystone mantle, original to the home . I am sure anyone can appreciate my desire to preserve And maintain the original integrity of an 81 year old property. Leo definitely understood this and for that, I am far beyond grateful. His prices are extremely fair and there is no compromise to his professionalism and workmanship. I also entrusted Leo with my daughter’s bedroom laminate flooring, baseboards, the backsplash to my built in wet bar, and crown molding in the living room. He is communicative, knowledgeable, and completely creative. He has been a joy to work with and I would recommend him as well as use him for any future projects. He met all my Expectations and beyond.

Project X Concrete Solutions transformed my backyard into a private retreat. I had a wooden deck installed a few years ago and I had to replace it several times, if you have a wooden deck in South Fla you could understand my frustration. Project X removed the deck and built a retaining wall and applied a 4 inch thick concrete slab across the top, not to mention the transformation to my patio, which was concrete and now a decorative concrete wood look finish. The best investment I ever made to my backyard. The professionalism and knowledge of the staff were phenomenal. I would highly recommend this company for any concrete work.

Met with Randy at my home . The job was to install an extensive amount of porcelain tile . After meeting with quite a few tile installers I have decided to enter into a contract with R&K tile. He did not take any payment in advance . He had his employees show up on the set date and the job began. after a few days John called and asked if I was happy with the progress. At this point he asked if he can get a some money .no words can explain how happy I was. . I Strongly recommend John From R&K for any bathroom or tile job. Thanks again John.

Oscar was very professional and is clearly skilled at his craft. He installed laminate floors and baseboards in a home I needed to get ready to sell. He even fixed the first contractor I hired bad wood work and made it look great. I’ve already booked him for another job this week. He’s very nice & punctual too.

Installed a barn door for us at our home. Very knowledgeable as the door didn’t come with any instructions and needed to be set up. It was a PVC door that came in pieces and needed to be assembled before installation. Quality of work was excellent and pricing was fair. Looking forward to doing more projects.

I am thrilled with the work Strong Tower performed. I could not be happier with the end result. The professionalism, value, and quality of work is superior. I strongly recommend Strong Tower. We purchased an older 1950s home that had uneven tile and marble floors throughout. Strong Tower removed the old floor and installed beautiful 24” x 24” tiles. They took precise measurements and meticulously checked each new tile with a level as they installed it to make sure that the floor through out the house was level. This required a significant amount of work (and mortar mix). They also redid the fireplace. The Strong Tower crew arrived early every day and worked six days a week until the job was finished. I left them with a key to the house and I never needed to check up on them. It was a pleasure working with them and we will have them back soon when we remodel our bathrooms. (For reference photographs showing gray tile floors represent the work Strong Tower did. Photographs showing orange/brown floors represent the house as purchased).

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
