Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

WOW!!!! Carlos is a very professional and excellent electrician. I can say now I found my general contractor, handyman, electrician. I will wait weeks for him rather than hire any other electrician. He was always so pleasant to speak to and responds amazingly fast, and did an excellent job.

Carlos with Forza Contractors is BEYOND AMAZING!!!!!! It is difficult in this day and age to find someone who takes such great pride in his work. He put in several dimmers , as well as a ceiling fan on my lanai . HE TREATED MY HOME AS IF IT WERE HIS OWN !!! I NEVER call any other electrician except for Carlos. He is so professional, thorough, responsive, punctual- And VERY PLEASANT. His work AND , work ethic are simply astonishing. I don’t typically write reviews- but had to make an exception in this case. Hire him - and you will never have to to look elsewhere for an electrician. He is also a GENERAL CONTRACTOR.... which is just an added bonus !!!!

Professional work by licensed electricians. The lighting we needed fixed actually needed to be replaced. They removed lighting, purchased the correct replacements, installed and discarded the old for us. Hours of time and money spent on a prior handyman was wasted. I would use them again and recommend their services.

Definitely the most professional electrician that has worked for me. Friendly, neat and very professional. Very fair price and was exact about the estimate. Sometimes contractors add on extra things, not this company, he gives you a price and that is it. They installed my Tesla charger s, added 50 amp outlets for generators and installed downlighting. Excellent work I’m very happy

John was very knowledgable and was able to troubleshoot our kitchen lighting problem right away. He also took the time to check breakers and connections making sure they were all tight and good - just because - and gave us some good ideas for future upgrades we can do (offering the knowledge but not pushing the sale). We are very happy with him and his pricing was fair. Added him to my phone as our new electrician!!! Thanks John.

David is a GREAT electrician. He came out to my home to give me an estimate at 6:00PM on a Tuesday - this kind of service is very, very rare these days. Most importantly, he’s been honest and fair with me regarding pricing and the work completed. I’ve got no complaints. He did a great job at a fair price. I will use him for all of my electrical needs going forward. For reference, he installed (and wires) approximately 10 LED cables lights and hung a fun. Great job all the way around.

Freddie came to evaluate the job before he started. He was practical with his advice and showed patience with my husband who always has a lot of questions. On the workdays, he came with the necessary parts and cleaned up after himself. He needed to make holes in the wall (they were very neat and well done) and ceiling and covered the openings before he left. We had cable lines run, ceiling fans installed, LED can lights installed to replace our old ones (what a difference they made!), water heater re-wired properly and a new electrical panel installed as ours was not an approved panel. Freddie teaches to future electricians which gave us even more confidence we had found the right person for our house.

We had an electrical disaster at our home we bought in foreclosure. My husband could not figure out all of the weird wiring issues. I must have had a guardian angel on my shoulder when i whent on thumbstack for no particular reason finding it online. I chose this company on them sendind such a quick professional quote. I was amazed when Carlos answered my call on a Sunday afternoon and on Memorial Day. I explained our mess and told him we had to leave on Tuesday at 11 AM. He put us first on his list , showed up at 8A.M. with his employees. They were wonderful! We were amazed at his expertise and the speed in which he could trace everything. I have NEVER had an electrician who could do all of the things he did so quickly. We were amazed and thrilled that the job was completed. We had expected him to look it over and schedule the repairs for another time. We are going to hire him to do some further upgrades to our home. They are totally amazing!!!!

This is the second time I had to do this as I went to download photo from my phone and came back and everything I wrote was GONE! Why doesn't your system SAVE, especially when you request a photo. Now I must do it from memory again. First of all David did a good job with the porch pendant light and bulb installs for me as I'm disabled and cannot walk without a walker as I broke my hip, had surgery and in rehab to learn to walk again but the second half of the project became a disaster with an errant install of what turned out to be oversized out of scale garage sconces that are not fully vertical and left the open area void showing. I accept responsibility for my mistake in getting the wrong size unknown to me but any pro electrician should have seen this from the onset but instead of coming to consult me at my door they just went ahead and jerry rigged the install crooked and with large gaps above the backplate exposed and suggested I should hire another contractor to correct that void, Asinine! Not once did they knock on my door to inform me of the issue until all was installed and now I have no recourse to return the items for an exchange and now will have to pay for smaller units and yet another install and donate them to a local charity. I grew up in a skilled trades city in Detroit area and no electrician would ever proceed with such an install that was crooked and left open connector box and they tell you to hire yet another contractor to fix their errant install. I also have two other issues, our original install date was Thursday and they were a no-show and when I followed up he apologized that he penned me in for Friday even though the tracking here confirmed it. Then after they left I peered out my back door and they left all the boxes and styrofoam in the middle of my driveway instead of my garage and I had to go out in my walker and push all the debris into the garage and I cannot walk yet without the aid of my walker. So, I ask did they just jerry rig the sconce installs so they got paid for the installs no matter how unprofessional the results are? Seems so to me as they could have knocked on my door to consult FIRST! Now I'm eating $500 for the sconces and $200 for the errant oversized installs. Also, we live in a gated community in FL and HOA standards do not permit such an install that is out of scale, crooked with backplate open. What do you think is fair? This was a half ass job that left me with another contractor to hire to fix their errors. Half the project done good while the other half was unprofessional crapola! Those sconces are the face of my home and presently left to look a clown show home! Thanks
