Great company! My AC was really old and using alot of energy and my ducts had alot of air leaks in the attic. I called Smith's Air Conditioning & Heating to give me an estimate on replacing my unit. The service guy Fred showed up the same day and showed me all the problems I was having and calculated the energy cost and I was overspending by hundreds of dollars. The following day they sent me a quote for an up to date unit and all new ductwork. I liked the reasonable cost for the work to be done. I quoted other companies that wanted to charge me more for less work. The following week I approved the quote and they showed up the next day ready to work on time and looking professional. The installers were very nice and they worked very clean leaving behind no mess. It was almost like nobody was there. The whole job took two days and my new ac works awesome! Very pleased with my choice of picking Smith's Air Conditioning & Heating and I would recommend them to anyone looking for quality hvac work big or small!

I hired Alex to remove my old A/C ducts and replace them with new ones. Alex's communication is excellent. He replied quickly and professionally to all my questions and scheduling requests. I was doing other home improvement projects simultaneously and one of the other vendors accidentally cut power to my AC and Alex gladly fixed it. Later, when it was time for him to install the new ducts, the other vendors turned on and ran my AC against my wishes and my whole unit froze up and started leaking everywhere, and it even clogged up my drain. Alex also gladly cleaned out my coils, replaced all the broken insulation on my pipes and unclogged the drain, also at no extra cost. Lastly, the thermostat stopped working properly and Alex replaced the thermostat to make sure I was left with a working AC unit. If you are looking for an AC company that is affordable, professional, doesn't sell you things you don't need and is willing to go the extra mile to make sure you have a properly working A/C, look no further and hire Alex. You will not be disappointed.

I had a leaking issue with the pipe underneath my double kitchen sink, where all the pipes had to be re-designed and re-built. 1st of all, Mike came to my home just on time as promised, something you cannot experience these adays. He studied the issue and the environment he would be working at in detail. He is a very organized individual with a great project design mentality.. He explained in detail what needed to be done and what kind of extra supplies were needed. He went to pick those up and returned in no time..Completed the task as he described before starting the project. Cleaned up the place as well. It took him only a little more than an hour which was amazing! Very respectful, worked at a timely manner, does not charge you for extras, very good work ethic..I would recommend Mike to everyone, especially who have plumbing issues as well as air duct cleaning, dryer cleaning, etc.

Possibly the most honest contractor I've ever dealt with! Darren is FANTASTIC! Came in, inspected my home for mold (none was present) and not only that, is so knowledgeable he even made me aware that I need to have my AC system/vent fogged and have a bad "split" or differential between the temperature of the cold area coming out of vents vs. that which is going into the return. GREAT, HONEST, guy that I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

all went fairly well except the 2 guys left behind a bit if a mess near the ducts and some vent screws weren't al the in and/or on an angle. After the dryer vent was cleaned my new dryer still will occasionally shows a possible blockage? Not sure if it's the dryer or the vents are blocked still. I have 13 vents plus the dryer and it took 2 guys 3 hours.

I received an estimate on a Friday, called them on the following Tuesday, and they started bright and early Wednesday morning, which was awesome! I opted to just replace the old duct work and they also advised me as to how to extend the warranty on my A/C unit, which I had no idea I could do (new home owner.)

We hired Randy to do a massive overhaul of our two bathrooms plus some other work on our second floor. He was fantastic! He was dependable, honest, and very straightforward. His attention to detail is spectacular and was very considerate of cleaning up the work area at the end of each day. He did it all: Removed and installed bathroom cabinets, mirrors, medicine cabinets, ceiling fans, bathroom vents, you name it. He completely remodeled our master bathroom including our shower by removing our existing small shower stall and demolishing an adjacent linen closet. He then created the most amazing large shower with beautiful tiling on the walls, a new shower floor, and even a bench in the shower. Since our initial project, we’ve hired him for additional jobs. In the future, he will be the only handyman that we will consider.

I contacted the company to replace the air ducts in my home. Chris showed up on time and was professional. The quote he gave me was lower than two other quotes I had received, but higher than the lowest quote. The company worked with me and we were able to compromise. The ducts were installed as scheduled and they left no mess. I would consider hiring them again.

I cannot say how happy I am with their service! They were right on time, worked around a couple heavy pieces of furniture that I couldn't move by myself. They were upfront and honest about which stains they could get out and which they couldn't. But they surpassed my expectations totally! They got out pet stains, makeup stains, and even most of the red fruit punch my daughter has spilled. The price they quoted me was the same that I paid, despite having heavily soiled carpets. They even left me a bottle of spot remover in case it got stained between now and when I sell the house. The men that came we're very sweet and professional. Will definitely use them again in our next house!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
  • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
  • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
  • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
  • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
  • Ductwork properly protected.
  • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

  • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
    • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
    • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
    • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
  • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
  • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.
