Melinda was the ideal tutor for my youngest sister. She helped her improve her math and reading skills in time for the 3rd grade FSA. She prepared Abigail with effective practice and provided tools that my sister could use out of tutoring. Melinda is punctual and professional. She is also great with children, as my sister was highly responsive to her and very comfortable. I plan to use her services again.

Amikka tutoring was one of the best options I could have chosen for my SAT tutoring. My tutor prepared me in a way that most tutoring places will not offer. He really sits down with each of his students to set a plan to achieve each and everyone of their goals that goes way beyond with what one pays for in only two hours. He always checks in with his students to make sure that they are on task and will always respond to any questions or doubts outside of the tutoring session. This tutoring program is truly genuine and effective on any student.

Adair's is such of special tutor because his teaching method builds a strong, an personal relationship with the student, he has become my son ally also my strong shoulder. As a tutor has filled a different role than our average teachers (my son is in a top FL magnet school) because he is creating a unique 1/ 1 close relationship. Personal relationships are foundational to any student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. Adair's true passion for teaching is something special and very hard to find these days.

Approximately once a week, a 30 minute session was scheduled. Since I am in AP Seminar, each session involved the discussion on how to further improve my paper, fix my line of reasoning, and provide proper explanations and evidence. At the beginning of the writing process, the paper was pretty rough, but with the help of Dr. Bates, my paper was in great condition. Every time we had peer review in class, my paper was barely ever commented on because Dr. Bates had prepared me to cover all the points necessary to possibly receive a high in each category of the rubric. Everything about the process of the tutoring sessions went very well and the advice and aid provided was extremely helpful. If there was one thing that did not go smoothly was the planning according to my schedule as there were always things coming up, but Dr. Bates did an amazing job of accommodating for these instances and ensuring that proper guidance was offered.

    About

Hello, all! My name is Richard and I have been a math interventionist at a middle school for the past three years now. Initially, I started out tutoring my nephew who was struggling with math. Just recently, he received a "3" on his elementary FCat Math last year. This year, he is in the 5th grade; and I fully expect him to receive a "5" on the FCat Math because his comprehension and understanding has increased tremendously. I coached three sports at my middle school (wrestling, basketball and track) this year, and part of the eligibility requirement is a 2.0 grade point average (GPA). In the past, the team has struggled to keep its best athletes eligible, so I mandated tutoring for all the guys and girls who wanted to participate in the above-mentioned sports. This was a huge success. The extra help with homework, class assignments and test preparation kept the majority of my athletes eligible and able to play the sports they love. The scholastic achievement gained through understanding also cut down on classroom interruption and increased participation, which had an unintended effect on their conduct grades. As far as methodology is concerned, my process is simple: I break problems down to their simplest form and teach students step-by-step how to solve them. Different children struggle for different reasons; so it is imperative for me to solve each problem step-by-step so they know how to organize their work, making it easier for me to diagnose their struggles. There are no shortcuts to math, but there are different ways of attacking a problem. It can be tedious at times, but I require students to show all their work. As a teacher, it is my job to check your process -- not your right or wrong answer. A person can guess on multiple choice questions and get them right 25% of the time. Ensuring that you thoroughly understand the process of solving problems is what I check for, and this method has served me well over the years. I specialize in math tutoring for FCat, SAT, ACT, Algebra 1 EOC, and all middle school math disciplines. Whether you are in high school trying to pass your EOC, or in middle school trying to improve FCat scores or overall math competence, I am the tutor you are looking for. I utilize a variety of online learning tools such as Khan Academy and Tenmarks to assist with the educational process. This is the technology age, and all standardized testing will eventually be computerized, so getting kids use to learning and testing using technology is paramount. I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck with your studies!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

    • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
    • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
    • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
    • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
