Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.

These guys were great! I wish this system had the option for more than 5 stars. These guys deserve it! I had several trees that had to be removed as well as some tree trimming, they did a fantastic job. Not only did they remove my trees they stump grinded the roots/base of the tree so you would never know there was ever a tree. After removing the trees they cleaned everything up. I already booked them next week to plant some new trees on my property. These guys get the job done!!! Could not be happier.

They responded immediately to my request for an estimate. I hired them later the same day. It took them a day and a half to complete a big job of removing some trees, grinding stumps and trimming trees. They were not able to remove a stump clump of areca palms, which was a disappointment, but overall, they did a great job. I was pleased with the level of professional work, trucks and heavy equipment. I would hire them again, and I do recommend them.

Robert removed two very large trees from my home this weekend. No other person who came for an estimate even brought up a permit; Robert checked with the county to ensure the legality of the removal. He was on time, worked very hard, and left the site clean. He provided a reasonable estimate for the work. I will continue to use him in the future and HIGHLY recommend him.

Hired to trim several large trees including oak and mahogany, and to trim and clean up Traveler’s Palm trees. Adequate job on large trees, though the palms were hacked like a monkey let loose with an axe. Left yard messy. Left cuttings partially blocking street upon departure. Sloppy job overall. Company was asked to return to attempt repair of palms and remove debris from roadway, which they did. Did fair job of fixing hacked palms and did clear roadway on second effort. Discovered a missing bungee cord after workers departed. Company replaced bungee cord, though not before an argument over it. Photos speak for themselves.

Elias Landscaping - Dave and the team - were absolutely great. Responsive, attentive, professional, even coming by the night before the job to see the site. Had a large tree removed the next day. Everything completed on time and well done, and with a full knowledge of health and safety given that we live on a public pathway. Thanks Elias landscaping!

Adrian and his colleague did a great job on our lawn project which included trimming overgrown and removing trees. They arrived early that day, were diligent, and worked hard to make sure everything we asked for was taken care of. Adrian would check back with us to take a look around and make sure all was ok. Adrian's priority is to make the customer happy. We really appreciated this and would hire Better Cut again for other jobs. Great job again and thank you!

Elías was excellent. I sent the job inquiry on Sunday night and he was able to come the next day early in the morning. His equipment was first rate. He and his helper arrived ahead of schedule and worked very efficiently. Our date palms looked great after the cleanup and removal of all the seed branches. For the same fee, he was able to clean up a few other trees nearby in the yard. I can't say enough as to his professionalism and for completing a quality job for me. Thank you. I will call Elias again and recommend you to friends and family.
