I rescued a not quite two-year old Bernese Mountain Dog a week ago. My previous dog walked on heel but Bernie was having nothing to do with that. He is so big and strong after two short walks he broke through the XL harness I had purchased for him, not to mention he was breaking my back, neck, and shoulders. I was extremely frustrated. I called Jorge on Monday morning and he came for his first session on Tuesday. He had Bernie walking very nicely on heel within an hour! Walking him is a pleasure now. I am looking forward to the rest of our sessions and learning from Jorge, he is an expert on canine behaviors.

Lori was great; she definitely helped me out of a bind. She went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable leaving our dog for the first time. She stopped by the day prior so we could meet her and answer any specifics about the dogs care and routine. Would definitely recommend and use Lori's services again.

Todd spent four days working with our puppy and my husband, and it really shows. He trained both the dog and the owner with common sense steps. Great work and we recommend him.

The 3 things I worried about when hiring a dog walker was having someone in my home when I'm away, reliability and that they care about my dog. Kim has given me peace of mind on all points and I highly recommend her.

Cami has been meeting with us for about a month now, helping us understand and learn to train our first ever puppy. From the very first meeting, Sage, our little marvelous mystery mutt has adored her. It is very obvious that she cares immensely for dogs and her chosen profession. Training with Cami is about reinforcing positive behavior, so that Sage enjoys the things she is being taught, and is a confident, happy and generously loving pup. She is also very structured and efficient about how she conducts our sessions, and follows each session up with a written concise synopsis of the exercises to be practiced following it. As i mentioned, we are both first time dog owners. Cami has been an absolute godsend as a resource of information and guidance about issues such as diet, grooming and even vaccinations! She is incredibly generous with her time, making sure to respond immediately to any queries sent to her between sessions. She has worked with us to train our pup through potty training, early obedience commands and leash walking so far, and we are eager to continue our sessions leading to a final canine good citizen certification for Sagie. We couldn't be happier and highly recommend her!

Working with Susan at Pawsitively Fun Pet Sitting LLC has been a fantastic experience. When you look for someone to care for your pets you want to find someone trustworthy, kind to your animals and someone your animals like back. Susan has been all of those things, and more, for our little family. She takes great time with our dogs and they look forward to her visits. She is very easy to get a hold of and very flexible with our ever changing schedules. She has been able to be there for us for daily visits while we are at work and caring for our dogs while we are away from home. We could not have asked for a better pet sitter.

I have had the pleasure over the last four years to meet and work with Ted, Dawn and RJ Hoppe. They are so dedicated in the marvelous work that they do. I know first hand, the quality, dedication, love, values, and pride that they all put into their work. They helped us from the moment we obtained my son's puppy "Tank", all the way to his training as my son's service dog. I highly recommend the Hoppes for anyone looking to get the best dog for their family, for protection, or for service. Just all around 100% happy! If you want the best all around-go see Ted, Dawn and RJ Hoppe! You will not be disappointed!

We've done a meet and greet with Madi and our two GSDs LOVE her! We are doing an evening this week for Madi to spend some time with the dogs before she house sits with them within the next couple of weeks. Madi was extremely professional and has a great energy about her plus she's just qualified in dog training so we are looking forward to hiring her for that too to help out with our fur-babies. Highly recommend.

Fairy Dog Mother was phenomenal! We recently moved to the Orlando area and were concerned about finding a good sitter. We found Debbie through this site and it was by far the best experience we had with a dog sitter. My two beagles are polar opposites. One of them is extremely shy and fearful of strangers. Debbie managed to build a relationship with her! Now Nena and Rocky love their new sitter!

What can I say? These girls came through clutch when my husband and I were left in the lurch looking for a sitter for our dog on New Year's Eve of all nights. These 'Moms' even made time for a quick but thorough meet and greet earlier on in the day so that everyone involved in the process felt comfortable and had clear expectations. They took loving care for our pet as if he was their own. The photos and videos they took of him romping around the house were icing on the cake! I would recommend these ladies to anyone l know, as their services are superb!

It has been a wonderful experience. Shana comes to my home and works with my dog and then I work with him. She is very calm, doesn't raise her voice and he loves her and responds to her commands. I have the idea now and and so does my puppy. I am not finished yet but Sebastian is such a good boy now. I would definitely recommend Dog Rules.

Shellie happens to be extremely experienced and professional. It shows in her work, in her attitude and demeanor, and how the animals respond to her kind nature. I have known Shellie for several years now and worked with her side by side. I trust her with my own babies and would recommend her to anyone who wants nothing but the best.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
