If you hire them. Make sure that they give you a full price. They advertise $62 per hour, BUT they charged me $235 for to minimum 2 hours and then the $62 per hour applies. I couldn’t cancel it because I really needed to move my stuff. Besides the expensive cost I had to pay the movers were courteous and careful with my belongings.

I would definitely recommend Firehawk Moving to everyone. They were early and worked at a face pace while keeping everything organized and undamaged. I received several quotes and Firehawk had the best reviews and price. They worked with my schedule and were very nice. I have hired movers in the past and Firehawk has been the best one I've hired yet. I would personally like to thank them for their hard work and dedication. These guys are by far the best movers that I have ever dealt with! They showed up on time and worked very fast without damaging a single piece of furniture or any of my possessions. They are friendly, professional and go above and beyond to get the job done right. I felt the price they quoted me was too low for the quality of service I received and since I have a lot of stuff I actually paid them more because they are that good! :-) I will definitely be recommending this company to all of my friends and family. Moving is a nightmare and they make it so much easier. Thanks again guys!

I used Dependable Deliveries for a residential move several miles away from each other and the two movers were efficient, courteous and extremely patient with my 91 year old Dad. They set everything up in the new location exactly as he wanted and more. Dependable deliveries completed the move in record time and was extremely reasonably priced. I would definitely use them again.

I 100% can NOT recommend these gentlemen more highly. They were highly communicative, were incredibly prompt, and handled my very old and cumbersome piano with such care and efficiency. I'm still baffled at how pleasant and effective Yanis and his movers were, and I wouldn't hesitate for a second if you're considering hiring them. They're worth every penny. Thank you!!

Matt and his crew are excellent! They were very polite and did a great job removing our existing landscaping and replacing it as designed. They also laid down weed mat and weed preventative. Very affordable pricing and he was also great with our dog that was very sad to see his team leave. I definitely recommend him.

We had to move some furniture from my dad's place in Tampa, FL to our place in Atlanta, GA. We hired A Move Ahead Movers to help load the U-Haul in Tampa. They were right on time (I was late) and they worked diligently the entire time getting the truck loaded quickly and efficiently while still making sure everything was safe and secure to make the long trip back to Atlanta. It was also a typical hot & humid day and I never heard a single complaint. They were super energetic and even helped us move some furniture from one room to another without hesitation. If we ever need movers again in the Tampa area we will definitely use them again. They more than exceeded our expectations.

Awesome experience with friendly, helpful and conscientious movers. Very polite and wrapped all of the furniture with care and efficiently moved all of my belongings. Was impressed that everytime I said thank you, they responded with a "You're Welcome!", rather than 'no problem' which is so unheard of these days. The extra attention to detail, the review of expected maximum time and entire process from being able to book online, receiving a call before hand to answer questions and a call to tell me they were on their way and if I needed any additional moving boxes since I had packed many items myself shows the level of service. Will definitely use Movers and Movers again for my next move and recommend to all of my friends! Finally a company that is working to redefine the moving experience sans the pain and stress. Thank for the lovely housewarming plant gift too!!

My experience with Discounted Moving was ideal. When I first started looking around for quotes, it was terrible - I am a single mom and I only really needed help moving the larger pieces of furniture that I cannot move alone (bed/coffee table/washer/dryer/etc). I was only moving 8 miles away, and was getting quotes for these few items at $350+ from Nice Guy Movers and Two Men and a Truck. I was also told by NGM that they did not believe the 2 hours they quoted me would given them enough time (plus the hour in drive time I would have to pay). I then found Discounted Moving, through my sister who referred them and I was quoted off the bat lower than either of the quotes from before. The customer service I received on the phone was amazing - the scheduling was easy - and I was made to feel very at ease about the whole move. The morning of the move, prior to arrival, I received a call from NGM and they wanted to check on my move, and see if I found someone (how nice!). And I told them that I was lucky enough to find a company that was able to work with me within my budget and thanked him. He then kept me on the phone and the tone went from pleasant to interrogatory immediately - he wanted to know who quoted me lower, if they were insured, where they were located, what their hourly rate was, and find out if I am ok using a company that isn't an A-rated BBB company like them, then "have a nice day"...it was one of the oddest, and most rude encounters I have ever experienced. It went from nice to scary in about 4 minutes :/ *Day of the move - the guys were there on time, and were extremely nice, friendly people. I was asked a few questions to get them started and then off they went to load the items. They had everything loaded, moved, and unloaded within 1.5 hours...which made me chuckle inside at the lack of confidence in the other companies to get this done within 2 hours. I had the pleasure of having Wes and Lawrence help me move - and these are two super cool nice people who are hardworking and honest individuals. They are looking to gain business through this hard work and good business practices, not through nickel and diming people to death - all I know is that next time I move, they are my first and only call. That is the faith I have in this company - the experience with this move was less stressful than the last two times I moved using an alternative company. Thank you guys for your great attitude and customer service; your hard work was noticed and I would not be ok with myself if I did not make a review online for you all! Have a blessed day!!

First of all, customer service and attentiveness to my needs as client was outstanding. The packers and the movers were very professional and efficient. The price quoted was the final price, no hidden costs or anything like that. I needed to be packed and did not have (nor did I care to acquire) my own boxes-- the company usually does not provide boxes but they went our of their way to acquire the necessary materials and it made my life much easier. It is also worth noting that the company does not automatically provide a moving truck (so ensure that you arrange for one), and this is something I did not realize until moving day or even think to ask about beforehand, however, the owner quickly moved to mitigate our misunderstanding and coordinated one on the spot on moving day and the rest of the operation went smoothly with no glitches. My stuff was unpacked, put away, and boxes discarded...I didn't even feel unsettled for the first night in my new place. I'd definitely recommend Happy Movers to anyone thinking of a local move.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
