I had five companies respond to my thumbtack request for lawn service. Elliott was really friendly and set service expectations from the start. The prices were all pretty close, so I went with Buren. Yard looks nice, I'm happy to recommend his services.

I hired Tee to remove a large amount of mulch from my back yard. He was very responsive to my phone calls, polite and completed the job to my satisfaction. It was a pleasure to do business with Tee. If I have more work I will definitely keep Tee in mind and would highly recommend him.

Man, I always hated doing yard work. I'm much more into Busch Lite and football on a given weekend. Glad I found LawnStarter! Alex was fantastic at diagnosing what my lawn needed and getting his crew to work as fast as possible. Now that we've been on a weekly schedule, I barely notice when they come and my lawn always looks awesome

Dee did an awesome job on our yard! We put in for a quote for lawn service and Dee came out the same day within a couple of hours and took care of us. He charges less than our previous lawn care professional and is much more knowledgeable. Super friendly and really put the time in to do the job right!

Of the four estimates I got they were the most honest. All others wanted to use a crane and unload tree in my neighbors yard! Would highly recommend them.

I would like to share my experience with this company for those looking to do any and all aspects of yard work for your homes or businesses. Robert and his group of workers have done such an exceptional job! We started out with a disaterous piece of property. We needed sod, irrigation, gradin, tree cutting and fencing done at our new home. We not only received a reasonable estimate. We received awesome quality work! I never even imagined our yard to look so fantastic. They were there when they said they were going to be and worked tirelessly for days to complete what needed to be done. Even with us adding more to the original job. Our yard is beautiful! Many thanks to Robert and Cody for all your time. We have also decided to keep them on to maintain our yard to keep it looking fantastic! We couldn't be happier with the outcome! Side note... People when you hire workers to do work in your yards, especially in Florida! Its always a nice gesture to fill a cooler with ice and Gatorade or water for the workers. If it's a long job requiring several days. Buy them lunch at least one day. Happy workers make productive workers. Just a thought. Thanks again Greenfeld and Yauger!

We hired them to take care of our yard while our house was on the market when we were living out of state. He was very responsive and quick to get over there and get it cleaned up. He sent a message letting me know when he arrived and pictures when the work was completed. We are very happy with the job done !

My yard was a mess, Bret and his team came in and took charge, his team moved sprinklers, redid manifold on sprinkler system, install 6 pallets of grass, added weed guard, added 16 yards mulch and 8 yard rock rock, planted over 100 plants, He is very professional and wants very much to please the customer, always asking if there was anything else he could do, Bret and his team did my whole yard in 2 days, I am so very pleased, I would not hesitate to recommend him, His crew is fantastic and Bret has a personality that you would think you knew him for years, see photos before and after

Needed weeds removed in an area of the lawn that had been killed 18 months ago by chinch bugs. Towles responded quickly, and understood immediately what I needed/wanted. They scheduled the job quickly, did what they said and when they said they would do it. AND, they did spectacular work. Theyclearly care about the work they do. At your best you could not outperform them. The best yard professionals I have yet to encounter. I would hire them again and highly recommend them to others.

Carlos did a wonderful job on my lawn. Very professional and responsive when contact regarding questions or concerns. My yeard immediately looked 100 percent better. Also I would like to note that I contacted him as a new client on Monday and he was at my house and completed the job within a week, even offered to come over the weekend. Carlos takes his job seriously and treats your yard as if its was his yard.

I had an appointment on Saturday morning and had an emergency and forgot to let him know. He left a voice mail and I called when I got home. The gentleman respined and was here by 3p.m. and did an outstanding job! I even recommended him to a friend and he did her yard the same day. He is very reasonable, promp, professional, and curteous! I hired him to continue to do my lawn. Thank you!

JDS did an amazing job. Yard looks great. Trim and edging work is superb. Very professional. We've used a number of lawn services at different properties over the years and they usually just speed mow and bounce. JDS made our yard pop.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
