I can help your child in math, reading, comprehension, and grammar.
I have a master's degree in elementary education and have been tutoring students for the last 15 years. Previously, I served as the education coordinator for Buehler Planetarium at Broward College for 13 years, along with being an adjunct professor at Broward College for the last 7 years. So, I am proficient in working with all age groups.
My specialty is reading. The schools use phonics which (according to their own research) is only 68% effective. Our high dropout rate is a result of this. Now the schools are using another research program, CORE, to teach reading.
I have taught numerous students how to read and improved the reading skills of many others. I do not use phonics but a method called Phono-Graphix, which has been around for more than 20 years. It is nearly 100% effective and even works well with dyslexic and LD students. It also teaches reading 10 times faster than phonics and creates excellent spellers. You may check the Internet to verify my statements.
All of my students have excelled in both reading and spelling. They regularly test two or 3 grades above their peers. One of my second graders (age 7) was complaining that I didn't have any books that were too hard for her to read. After she successfully read parts from several of my elementary school books, I finally opened a 6th grade social studies book, handed it to her, and said, "Here, read this." She looked at it and was silent for a few seconds. I thought I had finally found something too hard for her to read. Suddenly she reads, "In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania."
I was shocked and so proud of her. I can do this for you, too!
I am proficient in standard elementary math and also the new Singapore math that is taught in some schools. Singapore seems to be superior since the student tends to think math even after school, i.e., my first grader asked what time it was after we had gone on a local field trip. I told him it was 3:15. We had left at 2:00. He looked at me and said, "We were only gone for an hour and fifteen minutes." No one asked him to do that math. It just came naturally. I also recently increased one math student's comprehension and math ability by two to three grades.
I also worked this winter with a 14-year-old student who had been homeschooled with online teachers and was only at a third grade math level. (It was her own fault. She was lazy.) In a few months, I raised her math levels to fifth and sixth grade ability. I can certainly help your child in math.
I am a caring and understanding person, and children like me. I work at their speed. I don't push them to do what they can't, but I do challenge them to do their best. I'm sure you will be happy with the results.
