My wife and I have been living in a 6000 sqft. house without proper window treatments, carpets or “grown up” furniture. Neither one of us really had an appreciation for design, nor what is could do for our home, but we do now! After meeting with us a few times, Mark presented an elegant, but very livable design plan that made our house a home. Also, since Mark is a certified LEED Accredited Professional, he installed LED lighting throughout the house, used no VOC paints, switched to on-demand hot water, automatically programming thermostats, touchless faucets. He also installed carpets and pads that were LEED compliant, they didn’t smell! We now have a house tailored to fit our lives and sustain our health. Beautiful and healthy is a great combination. We love to point out the details to our friends, thermostats that learn. Clean, tailored design that is elegant but not fussy. Our home is part of our family and we love it.

Levinson Interiors has truly turned my house into a home and I cannot say enough about Mindy's talent, knowledge, ideas, experience, team of contractors and resources...all very impressive. I had 4-5 meetings with other designers who were over priced with unrealistic ideas, snobby, & not interested in my input or lifestyle. Then I met Mindy and everything fell in to place. She was open to my style and goals and was honest about what would and wouldn't work. Even if I pushed, she still knew what would be best in the end and I'm glad she knew enough not to be swayed by some of my unrealistic ideas that I would have regretted. We still have more to do as we are going room by room. It's exciting to see how even small changes (wallpaper, light fixtures, paint, molding, etc) are making such a beautiful impact.

Vee knocked it out of the park. Hired Vee to design a home office. From concept to finish she was there every step of the way. The results are amazing, there is no way we could have incorporated so many elements without her guidance, knowledge and great taste. She thinks of every detail and has a wealth of relationships for every aspect including furniture, fabrics, electrical, painting, wall coverings, technology, lighting, carpentry and who knows what else. She sources each item from the best supplier for your needs / tastes, which is much more work but the results are astounding. I would definitely recommend Vee to anyone and will be using her to help with the rest of the house. She's a great find!

A friend recommended Ana, who is very professional and did a great job selling our home, which saved us about $6,500 in home staging, and also got us an over the listing price offer within one week! We even hired her to help us decorate our new home! What a find!

Andrea worked with us to decorate/design our completely empty beachfront apartment. That meant selecting everything from furniture to fabrics to painting to a new kitchen backsplash and cabinets. But she didn't stop there-the tile and furniture on our outdoor lanai created an additional (and often favorite) living space. We appreciate that Andrea listened to us and understood exactly what we wanted and then helped us do that within our budget. All this while we were often more than one thousand miles away! Within three months we enjoying our fully furnished space. She has excellent taste and offered ideas and solutions we didn't think of.

My husband and I would EXTREMELY HIGHLY recommend Hatley and Thompson. There AREN'T ENOUGH STARS IN THE SKY TO RATE THEM!!!! We hired Hatley and Thompson for our newly constructed home in Florida while still living up north. Everything was done by email and telephone. We didn't have to spend any money or time to travel to Florida at all during the process. The finished product is breathtaking!! Every room from ceiling to floor and wall to wall is absolutely stunning and beautifully put together. We could never have done this ourselves in several lifetimes. Their expertise and extremely good taste and recommendations are priceless. I would trust them to choose everything but they made sure the home suited our likes and wants and they worked tirelessly with us to achieve this and make it our own. They went above and beyond the scope of interior design. They educated us every step of the way and gave us background on even the smallest details of the project. They even went ahead and helped us eliminate an ant problem that they noticed and educated us on hurricanes, insurance, cleaning products, table coverings and much much more. Finally, they are honest, quality people of extremely high character and we are lucky to have met them and feel as we are now friends! We would use them over and over and over!!!!!!

35 West Design is AMAZING!!! I recently hired 35 West Design for my living/dinning room remodel. I had never used an interior designer before so wasn’t sure what to expect. Alex and Andrea were awesome throughout the whole thing. They helped me identify a budget that made sense for the project and helped me really articulate what my wife and I wanted to accomplish in the space. The space had a lot of challenges – very high ceilings, no separation between Living and Dinning and not a lot of character. We wanted to make the space feel more intimate and cozy where we could really entertain for dinner parties. We really like the Restoration Hardware look, but know that it can be a budget buster. We also wanted a space that didn’t look cookie-cutter like all the other space in Miami. To that, we really wanted the space to be one that we could be proud of when we had friends and family over. Alex and Andrea were so knowledgeable with lighting, paint and space planning that it was very easy and fun working with them. They were both very approachable and always ready to offer suggestions. They worked well within my budget and totally feel that its money well spent. We used to never use these spaces now, my wife and I find ourselves making excuses to stay at home and enjoy the space. We truly never thought we’d have a space that so fit us and out family. The team at 35 West Design delivered. I highly recommend them. We’re actually having them work on our bedroom next. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
