The mechanical training of sounds, intonation, and accent patterns was very important and helped me understand how to position my tongue and produce the correct sounds. Whenever I felt that a sound was not good enough, or when I could not clearly hear or feel the difference, he guided me through reflection. He helped me understand how the sound felt from my perspective and how it should sound to the American ear. This reflective process helped me move forward and develop a deeper connection with the language. As a native Spanish speaker, I always felt that the culture of speaking Spanish is very different from the culture of speaking in an American accent. At times, I was even afraid that by developing my American accent, I might lose a part of my Spanish cultural identity. However, Prof. Alex helped me understand something very powerful: both cultures are important, and having both makes you a stronger and more complete person. This idea made me feel safe, secure, and confident during the entire program. Because of this approach, I did not only improve my accent — I also transformed the way I see myself as a speaker of English.
