We used several contractors during our remodel and none were as good as Brent. It's not "keep his business card", his name is in my cell phone. I won't call anyone else. Highly recommended.

Completely replaced the privacy fence around the yard, including 3 gates. Highly recommend. They added in additional support posts where they felt it was needed. The fence is level with precision accuracy. Every day when leaving the job, the yard was clean up and then on completion, the area was immaculately put back to original and improved landscaping. Reasonably priced and provides the exact job you request. Treats your home as if they working on their own home. Will definitely hire again.

I contacted Fain Property Maintenence after deciding to sell my home. I met Joel Fain, who was very profesional, and he did a walk through of my house giving me advice on repairs and fixing up that would increase the value of my home. The pricing was fair and the work was completed in a timely manner. I had my realtor give me a quote before and after the repairs were made and there was a huge difference in the numbers. My house wasn't even on the market 24hours before I had two cash offers. There is no doubt in my mind had I not hired Fain Property Maintenence, I would not have been as pleased with the sell my property. I recommend him to anyone looking to do repairs on their home. I have since recommended him to my mother who hopes to put her home on the market as well. The work done was amazing and I plan on keeping him in mind with repairs needed to my new home. And I just want to say thank you for the job well done.😆

McCammon Construction did a fantastic job on my addition. The work was done with quality material and the crew payed attention to the details which some contractors overlook. The owner was always available and responsive if I had questions . Most importantly, the the job was priced fairly and I felt that the owner truly was working the job in my best interest. I will 100% use McCammon Construction the next time I need a contractor.

I needed help replacing some fallen and sagging aluminum siding, repair to a porch roof and some heavy yard work done for a rental property. These were small, aggravating jobs that many contractors would not come look at. Richard arrived when he said he would, and gave me an estimate that evening in writing that I thought was very reasonable. He did all the work unsupervised, when he said he would do it, and did a quality job. He also called my attention to a problem that needed to be fixed that I had not noticed. He took pictures and explained precisely what the problem was and what needed to be done to fix it. He is a very personable young man who communicates well. I found him to be competent, trustworthy, and dependable. I am so happy to have found him on Thumbtack and willingly recommend him.

I hired Tommy to repair and paint the interior walls of my home. It was a multi-day job and his team showed up on time and ready to work every day. They were professional, courteous and respectful of me and my household goods. I didn't have to worry about someone showing up late, hungover or high (those of you who have worked with some contractors know what I'm talking about). The repair/paint job is excellent and I am very pleased. In addition, they also replaced flow valve and fill valve assemblies in my guest bathroom, installed a new double sink with faucets and hung a new door on my screened patio enclosure. (Thank you Donnie and Jeff). All of the work was done at very reasonable rates and Tommy was not satisfied until everything was perfect. I would not hesitate to recommend or hire Universal in the future. Thank you guys for a job well done.

Mark Taylor and PFIM has done some extensive work for us over the last few years. He has done work both in my home and as a subcontractor for me at Eglin AFB. The home work has included a remodel of our upstairs that included a dormer and all the finish work. He has installed tile and even made suggestions how to achieve the fine finished look in our 1920 house. The end result is a space that respects the bones of our house but also brought it up to date. Mark also designed and installed custom awnings and sunshades...people literally stop their cars to ask us who did them! He has a great eye for detail and is a think on his feet problem solver. On Eglin, my company contracted him to build custom cabinetry. Both my company and our customers are very happy. I would suggest anyone looking for an honest, hardworking Contractor give Mark and his crew serious consideration. He truly is a fix it man!

I originally hired Dan to finish work on a 820+sf home addition. Dan completed the framing, doors, insulation, drywall, wall & ceiling texturing, and crown molding. After that, Dan's wife Brenda managed the painting of the project. Dan has returned to perform many other projects over the years; such as, custom tile, wood flooring, kitchen remodel, custom archways, lighting & ceiling fans, garage door opener, custom closet, and much more. Dan makes suggestions on where to save the customer money and offers discounts when available and supports our military. Dan has always been trustworthy with my home in his craftmanship and security. Thanks Dan & Brenda, P.S. Looking forward to the next project.

My new landlord was in a bit of a time crunch to paint the apartment (the standard off-white) because he was running behind on some of the other things the apartment needed. I didn't want another set of off-white walls anyway, but he informed me that my color choice AND a painter would be up to me to pay for and organize. I liked the review for Bruce here on Thumbtack, and the fact that he used complete sentences. This shows he isn't the type to just jump on a job request with the other competitors. Plus, his bio offers handyman skills. This way I could tackle two move-related things at once. Because the apartment is older and a little unloved, it also bothered me to have to look at previous bad paint jobs and plaster repairs on trim and walls. Bruce is particular about his work, and the result is a pretty seamless new paint job. He is also knowledgeable about the process of sampling, mixing and purchasing paint. Since I am a first-timer, this was very helpful. The curtains were as tricky as they always are, but he didn't complain. Likewise, they are as gorgeous in the new place as they always are. He replaced the screens on the outgoing apartment's tall Victorian porch windows which had been clawed at by neighborhood cats during staring contests with my indoor ones. Lastly, I had a summer visitor from Savannah who rehabbed a vintage mansion, so these two had a great time discussing their trade. When I was wondering whether I should spend the money or just put up with another off-white rental experience, my Savannah visitor said, "Hire him." Bruce came in and worked alongside the landlord and other contractors... and then... THEY hired him too! And all of the above in 4 days! Highly recommended.

Excellent small business, These people actually stand behind what they do. Mr. Kirkland has the ability most small businesses don't. He does the work he agrees to, at the price agreed upon, in a timely manner. That is hard to find in a local contractor. Keep up the good work!

Rick was critical in addressing my home repairs in order to close on the home I was selling in Gulf Breeze, FL. He addressed a number of repair and maintenance issues that were specified to be corrected prior to the closing on the home. Rick was prompt, efficient, fairly priced and an overall pleasure to know. I highly recommend GCDH for home repairs, remodeling etc.

Creative Home Transformations, and Hal Whittemore, acted as general contractor on a complete remodel (to flip the house) we did in Denver in 2015. CHT stuck to the budget, did quality work, and completed an attractive remodel which we sold prior to the open house.

Mike with Steel Standing is a great contractor. Came by the day after I first called him. He took pictures, measurements, asked me what my expectations were, and 2 days later emailed me an estimate with the scope of work (2 other contractors walked in gave me a figure and walked out). Mike and his crew were very polite and respectful. I now have a new house and an additional friend. I highly recommend Steel Standing LLC. Thank you Mike!

We recently had the good fortune to have Alex Bresnock come on board to help our contractor finish a pretty large remodel of our home. I wish we’d had him at the beginning of our project! He installed a beautiful wrought iron stairway for us and every spindle and tread is perfect, as He is a perfectionist! We were comfortable having him in our home when we were away And I would not hesitate to give him a key to our home. You will be more than happy with his work.

Ronnie is a pleasant, friendly professional who I would recommend to anyone wanting to employ a competent contractor. He installed all of my outdoor lighting, and I am thoroughly pleased with the results. I am going to ask him back for all of the household repairs that I require. Thank you for giving him a call with your home needs.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
