Our family hired Blaze Tree Service for tree removal and stump grinding projects at two homes within our family. From the start of the inquiry process (interacting with staff at their office) to the onsite bidding process and actual hiring and removal/grinding processes, all of Blaze's communications were very prompt, professional, and courteous, with a personal feel. They were able to schedule both projects for the same day. One was a one-tree removal and stump grinding. The next was a removal and grinding involving five trees, including a sturdy but leaning pine tree about 40 feet tall. Both projects involved were within smallish backyards surrounded by fences, and the first removal involved working around power lines. The crew performed every step efficiently, safely, and cleanly. Looking at the yards afterward, it was very difficult to tell that they'd just completed the two projects that they did, considering that downing trees can result in a whole lot of debris. Blaze performed to a T -- or, should I say, to a TREE! -- all for a good price. If necessary, we would hire them again in a snap.

Terra Group Services was great to work with. After reviewing the work and visiting the site, the difficult tree removal was scheduled within a week. Work was performed well and on time. Clean up and debris removal was on a daily basis. The yard looks great after the work was completed.

I broke my foot and arm, and was unable to clean my entire patio area for over 6 months. It was a huge mess! Abaco came out to trim all of my shrubs, pull weeds, rake leaves and add mulch . And they did it all in a very short period of time and in the rain. Highly recommend them to all!!

Called and asked for a quote. They came out first thing in the morning the following day to remove a tree that I had in my yard. I had them grind the stump down too so it would be easier for my fence installation. Professional prompt service!

Overall a very good price for the tree removal and tree trimming that needed to be done. Scot is very personable and knowledable and on time. His crew could be a little more careful about where some of the debris falls. There was some "collateral damage" on some of my wife's ornamentals outside. A large amount of leaves were left around the outside air handlers at my business which could have turned into a bigger problem if we had not recognized that and cleared the air handlers ourselves.

Nate and his team did a great job sourcing the trees for a surprise Christmas gift. He provided options, and several suggestion that really helped me narrow down the final selection. The install work was very professional and everything was cleaned up like new after it was completed. Thanks for a great job.

Ongoing lawn and garden upkeep. Semiannual tree trimming and regular shrubbery clipping. They do an excellent job, rather than "just good enough"!

LJ removed 3 mature norfolk pines and 1mature live oak from my property. LJ's arrived on time with a professional crew and equipment. After safeguarding the property from debris, LJ climbed each tree and removed sections in a controlled manner. Debris was removed the same day. Despite 8hrs of tree removal, no one was harmed nor was property damaged. In addition, LJ trimmed several trees in my font yard. The trees now look healthy and maintained.

My parents, who are seniors, needed two recliners removed from their home. Once I created a junk removal project here on Thumbtack, River responded promptly. He was professional and very courteous--he also offered to come same day, which was fantastic. Just as he promised, River gave me a call to let me know when he was roughly 30 minutes away from my parents' home. He was wonderfully polite when I spoke with him over the phone. According to my parents, River arrived when he said he would, and was genuinely friendly and professional. I wholeheartedly recommend River to anyone considering his services! My parents and I will contact him again if we have need of the services he offers in the future.

Josh was very professional, punctual and did a great job in trimming and cleaning up trees, removing debris and going above and beyond. I will definitely be using him in the future. As you can see, the trees and patio were quite the mess. The area and fence is all cleaned up. Heck, I didn't even know I had a BBQ Grill under all that mess. I've tipped the table to remove it. Hope you can view photos and see what a great job. Josh cut and hauled off all debris and there was a lot. Thanks, Josh!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
