I have an old house and needed a custom size cutting board to replace one that was worn out. I was surprised he was willing to do a small job. He got it done quickly and when we got crossed up on the exact size, he resized it and had it back in no time. We're very happy with his work.

My husband and I just had our sliding-glass doors replaced with a brand new custom window. The Rymar construction crew (Mark, Brian, etc.) were fantastic! They did an impeccable job and took the time to explain the process to us. They were also friendly and professional. We'd recommend Rymar Construction and Services, LLC, to anyone. Thank you!

WOW! Richard is a skilled craftsman. We have a large dining room table with two leaves. One got extensively damaged from moisture and mold. While it was beyond perfect restoration, he did an unbelievable job on it and made it look great. We now have a brand new looking leaf with a bit of history to it. Will be taking the rest of the table to him next week for refurb and may possibly have him build a custom cabinet for our bathroom remodel. Thanks Richard for the great work. Would recommend him for any wood working job.

Patching dry wall in my apartment. Jeff was a professional and knowledgeable worker. The job was a challenge as the holes were large and some were actually on a bedroom door. Jeff stayed late to make sure the job was done right. He helped me get my security deposit back from my apartment complex without issue. His price was fair. He's just a genuinely nice guy who's trying to help people by doing honest work and not price-gouge his customers. I'd give him six stars if I could.

Brian painted our master bedroom and master bath. He also repaired a damaged ceiling and added trim around windows and doors. He was very professional and polite. He was prompt and finished the work in the time frame promised. He did excellent work and was very neat, using plenty of drop clothes in the work areas. He moved several pieces of furniture for us. This was a very good experience and I highly recommend Brian.

I can not rave enough about Reel Construction, they are second to none. We are new residents of Seminole, FL and bought a home that ended up needing some MAJOR repairs and renovations (including structural). Not knowing anyone locally for the job, we had to depend on our gut to choose our General Contractor. We reached out to countless contractors, called numbers off of vehicles driving down the road and trolled the internet for more hours than we wished. Our scope included: -Demo the entire exterior of the house down to structural wood and replace 30 year old cedar planks with Hardie lap siding and nasty tar paper wrap with Tyvek. -Eliminate 2 windows entirely, convert 2 windows to doors (one sliding and one french), replace 11 other 30 year old windows with up to date, code compliant Anderson windows, convert 1 sliding glass door to a window and cut off a dilapidated, rotted 12ft x 8ft balcony on a third floor. -New roof. Which he was honest in telling me that I was better off contacting a roofer independently and gave me 3 roofers to contact. We ended up Going with Acoma Roofing...also a total home run, great experience, phenomenal outfit! So, after reaching out to dozens of people, it came down to 4 GC's... 1- Guy A, came by to look at the scope and after calling him for a week asking for a proposal, he finally answered the phone and said he did not have time for our job. 2- Guy B, was 3 hours late to a set appointment, "could not find our house", claimed he is a one man show with no overhead which is why his (incomplete) estimate that did not cover my entire scope of work and was suspiciously low...This dude was 80 years old and didn't really "listen" to me during his visit anyways. 3- Guy C, I had to beg him for a face to face meeting to go over the scope of our job for 3 weeks! He finally sent his "new foreman" and he showed up to our house late and with his wife and kids in tow...Then I had to beg him for 3 more weeks for a proposal which I still have not gotten as I write this review. And those are the ones that I got in touch with!!! This doesn't include the countless emails sent and voicemails left with responses that range from no call back or clearly incompetent outfits, to having a yelling match over the phone because "I didn't know what I was talking about and if we are going to start out by you telling me how I'm going to run my job, then go call someone else..." It is exhausting to even narrow it down to 3 equal, or even similar options to choose from. Also, if you are reading this and are wondering who these other outfits are, feel free to call me for more details, my name is Happy 904-716-1616 So on to the good stuff, from day one, Jory was punctual, attentive, accommodating and answered the phone (or called me back by COB) every time I needed him. He is friendly, clean cut and very professional. He is well educated, courteous around my wife and kids and well mannered. Basically the dude has it together and is not a disheveled mess. He made us feel comfortable from the moment we met. He caries himself with the confidence that no job is to big but remains humble enough that you would hire him for a simple bathroom remodel or an inexpensive deck addition...I can confidently say that he has the knowledge and skill to tackle any job. He took care of every detail from pulling permits to assisting with my material order from Home Depot. He negotiated with the scaffolding company on my behalf and took a bill that potentially was $10k to half of that. He coordinated every city and county inspection and did EVERYTHING on the up and up. I do not have a shadow of a doubt that he is the most honest General Contractor that I have met or will ever meet, and that extends to his crews BTW... On several occasions his crews worked at our house with full access to the inside (we had no option) while we were out of town or away for the entire day. Most of the time he was not there the whole day, leaving Crispin, his main foreman in charge. At no point were any valuables in our house (or garage) even looked at, there was plenty of opportunity for stuff to go missing and it never happened, it's not even a thought to these guys. With a lot of hesitation, I gave him the keys to my house, but our stuff remained as safe as if I was there watching them...it blows my mind that people this honest still exist. Everybody from Jory himself, Crispin, Pablo, Vicente, Thomas, Ken and down to the newest helper were there just trying to make an honest living. They represent what is great about America! The quality of his work: I am in the elevator business, I came from oil and power, I know my way around tools...on a few occasions I tried to cut some corners (not compromising the end product or look, but mainly to save money) and he put his foot down and did things right. On one occasion even saying that his name was on the line and he would work with me on the cost of doing it right if he needed to but refused to cut a corner, even when I was asking him to! In any event, we ran into a lot of water and termite damage to the house that was out of scope and he could have nickle and dimmed me to death but instead chose to keep my final bill reasonable (he is not the cheapest guy out there but he is the best by a long shot, and you truly get what you pay for). Now check this out, and I still have a hard time believing this myself, but, he started my job the day we agreed, he finished my job 15 days ahead of schedule and the final bill was within 2% of his original budget... Everything you have read so far is why I am taking the time (that I don't really have) out of my busy day to write such a detailed review. He deserves to be raved about and no, he did not bride me to write this! As you can read, Jory Romano and his crews far exceeded our expectations. I will never go to another outfit for my future remodeling or constructions needs nor will I ever stop raving about how impressed I am with Reel Construction!

Markus and Naomi built a custom breakfast nook and table for us. The breakfast nook had so much pride put into it down to every last detail - they even put quarter round on the INSIDE of the storage area to give it a finished look. It looks and fits perfectly. I was very particular about the farmhouse table I wanted and they nailed it! It has the rustic and custom look I wanted and the iron legs are exactly like the Pinterest picture I gave them for inspiration. Couldn't be happier! Don't order a table from pottery barn or anywhere else. So excited about my unique and custom table and nook!

Devil Dog repaired the overhang and soffit of my garage after a delivery truck ran into it. The garage is part of a custom built home with custom detail and materials. The repaired area looks like nothing ever happened. Definitely recommend Devil Dog!

Freddie took an antique library table with difficult S shape columns and was able to make modifications to customize the table to be the height of a coffee table. The results are excellent and the now antique coffee table looks as if that was the way the original builder had intended it to be. Great job Freddie!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
