Maureen provided an immense amount of help for us and our pup who was afraid of going outside! By giving us a different perspective on the situation, her intuition and expertise helped solve the problem almost immediately. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a dog/puppy trainer. She was a pleasure to meet and work with!

David Ochoa, in my opinion, is probably one of the best dog trainers I have had the pleasure to work with. I have some physical limitations, that he was able to address & modify to my particular needs, while teaching me a different approach to train my 73 pound black lab mix named Churchill (he also helped me with my 13 pound dog, Winston). I had had several bad falls while walking Churchill. I desperately need help to stop Churchill lunging at barking aggressive dogs. David explained what I had to do, why I needed to think like an alpha canine, and how I was to implement the corrections with Churchill. David's knowledge about dogs is incredible; he truly understands what he is doing & his love of dogs is clearly seen. Just trust him and remember you must be the top dog in the house. I highly recommend David, as does my spouse! Already, after 2 days, I have gotten compliments on how good Churchill is behaving. David said I could call him at any time if I had any further questions about handling my dogs. He knows what he is doing!!

Mike is a highly-skilled and trustworthy dog trainer. He is very easy to communicate with regarding scheduling and discussing the specific training objectives you would like fulfilled for your dog. Furthermore, it was easily discernible that my dog bonded and that he loves and takes good care of the dogs he works with. I would highly recommend him to anyone!

I am the owner of a very energetic Black Labrador. I knew that I had a dog with high energy and needed professional help with training my puppy. I found Martha Bernal through a friend at work who was happy with her dog training. Martha guided my puppy through ten sessions of puppy training (basic puppy obedience). I was very pleased with her obvious love of dogs and immediate results with each lesson. Martha has a gentle, effective approach to training dogs and my dog responded very well to her training sessions. The end result for me was that my Labrador became a lot more easy to manage because he understood the commands (requests) that I made such as "Come" "Sit" "Stay" "Leave it" and he also stopped jumping up on people. I enjoyed seeing my dog learn and am very happy with the dog training that Martha provided to my dog. He remembers everything she taught him and it makes our family happy to have a well trained big dog. I would recommend her highly to anyone considering a dog trainer.

Gregg knows dogs, he loves dogs and is an incredible trainer. Sweetie is now 11 years old, walks offleash, comes, stays, sits, and understands all the commands that makes life with her an unbelievable experience. You can't go wrong with Gregg Flowers. He is the best.

Christopher was hired to visit my two dogs and give them a break outside after being kenneled all morning. My larger dog is aggressive to other dogs and can't be let out if other dogs are around, so this can be a challenge. Christopher has met it head on with a calm demeanor. Both my dogs (and my cat, who has taken advantage of having a new person to shed on) love him and look forward to his visits. I will definitely hire Christopher again the next time I need a sitter.

Christine is awesome! She did a great job helping us train our 10 week old Brittany Spaniel puppy, Lola. She listened to what we wanted to work on each week and incorporated it into our training session. Rather than training your dog for you, Christine teaches you what to do so your dog will listen and follow your directions. She uses positive reinforcement so your dog is always happy. Lola is our pet but also a hunting dog every now and then. So, Christine learned how to train her for hunting purposes. She is incredibly knowledgeable and made the training sessions easy to understand, fun and enjoyable for Lola and us. She also followed up with additional information and tips after each session. Christine has also helped us during the day by coming over and taking Lola for walks. We always get cute pictures and an update when she leaves on how the walk went. I would highly recommend Christine to anyone looking for training, walking or sitting. We love Christine and so does Lola!

Rose has been a pleasure to work with. Her knowledge and patience has exceeded my expectations. She is what a real dog trainer should be. I have spent a lot of money in the past with others with no end result and after just a short time I have already seen great results that continue even after she leaves our home. My Pitbull and Bull Dog love her and are growing to have much better manners. We are very grateful for the work she has put into the training and educating us to be better owners. Will recommend to friends and family without a doubt!

I hired Tracy to help me train my 8 month old Newfypoo. I have used different trainers in the past for other dogs of mine and can honestly say Tracy has been the most attentive and has gone above and beyond to help us reach our goals. I was extremely impressed with her facilities and resources she has to train her dogs. I highly recommend the week training that she offers boarding the dogs, after that week our puppy came home with obvious improvements! We are extremely happy with the service we received, both my newfy and I :)

We adopted a very shy and undersocialized young dog from a local rescue. With training and group socialization led by Chelsea @ Canine Connection, we were able to transform into a confident and friendly little girl. We will always be grateful for the help she provided (and continues to provide) for us.

There aren't enough good things I could say about Angel and her work with our Baylee girl. Still in her "puppy" stage, Baylee came with a lot of energy, excitement, and curiosity. Angel was able to use all of that in a constructive way to help Baylee learn some boundaries. Thankfully Angel was very open with communication and sent updates frequently which was a big ease on our minds because we felt we could trust Angel, even not knowing a whole lot about her beforehand. We picked up our Vizsla yesterday and there is a huge difference in discipline. Obviously the first week back with us will be the most challenging, but if we do our part, there's no doubt in my mind that these new "tricks" will stick for good. We highly recommend Angel as a loving and hard working dog trainer.

Rick is an outstanding trainer! Our dog needed obedience training and she was always too excited and jumping on everyone. She's been back home for a few weeks now and she is incredible. She obeys, is easy to walk, plays great with our small children, and is no loner jumping. Definitely worth the investment. I would recommend Rick's services to anyone looking to change or improve their dog's behavior.

We recently got a new puppy named Wendy. Being that Wendy is a Miniature Dachshund, I was unsure how well she could even be trained because of how small she was. Rebekah far exceeded our expectations! Within 24 hours of Wendy being a part of The Streadfast board and train program, she was already successfully training her to not be the out of control puppy we knew. I got many updates from Rebekah on Wendy's progress, and my husband and I were in such shock of how fast she was learning! Upon picking Wendy up from her board and train, Rebekah was sure to show us everything she had worked on with Wendy so that we could continue consistency, and implement all of the training techniques at home. She also emailed an entire over view of her training and all of the steps to continue to have a successfully trained dog. We are incredibly happy with Steadfast Dog Training and Rebekah!

Amy's expertise came into our lives at an incredibly important time -- a few months after we had our first baby. Our beloved dog was not always so lovely with everyone. He was very protective and came across as aggressive to a lot of our visitors. Amy worked with us to develop strategies that accommodates our needs, as well as the needs of dog. She explained behavior to us that we had never fully understood. Most importantly, she helped us understand how to create a home that is safe for everyone: our baby, our visitors, and our dog. I only wish I had met her earlier so we could have done puppy classes. I cannot recommend Amy highly enough. She has a deep understanding of dog behavior and her training program is compassionate for the dog and the parents.

I couldn't be happier with the service Nikki has provided to our family and our Shasta girl. She is an aggressive breed dog and requires special attention. Nikki handles her so well and knows exactly what she needs. She also truly cares about her and treats her like her own.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
