Marcia is wonderful I had an emergency and my vet was full. We planned a cruse over a year ago and the money was non-refundable. We had her watch our 2 cats. She emailed us on a daily basis and all was great.

We first met Susan in Virginia, where she was a vet tech at our vet's office. After we moved to Florida, we arranged for Susan to stay at our house and take care of our five dogs while we were away on vacation for a week. Susan did a great job in all aspects. She was very professional, making sure she had all the information about each dog's particular habits and needs, any anxieties (we have a couple that are afraid of heavy weather, for example), feeding, where they sleep, etc. She also made sure to have contact info so she could update us every day on how they were doing, which she did. Also, Susan happens to be great with animals. She developed an instant rapport with every one of the dogs. I highly recommend her, and we are already planning when we will ask her to come again.

I moved here a year and 1/2 ago from out of state with my 13 year old Golden Retriever Maggie. I didn't know anyone and my biggest concern was my Maggie when I was at work. Not only is Maggie a senior dog but she had severe arthritis issues that caused her mobility issues. When I met Shannon I felt immediately that she had the experience and compassion to deal with an aging dog. Shannon not only is an excellent caregiver whom I trust implicitly, but she is a great source for all things dog. She has referred me to a great vet, a very skilled surgeon and helps me troubleshoot the numerous health issues that Maggie has on a regular basis. The most important thing to me is I know that I can trust Shannon 100%. I leave the house knowing that if Shannon is scheduled to visit Maggie she will show up and I don't have to worry about a thing. I don't know what I would do without Shannon, she has been our lifesaver here in Florida. :-}

Jeff has helped me tremendously with obedience training for my young Brittany spaniel. Jeff is a very experienced dog trainer and has worked with a wide variety of breeds. He provided me with a customized training program that was specific to my dog's breed and energy level. The training support that I received from Jeff was highly effective. I was most impressed by Jeff's personalized approach to dog training. His ability to work with both the dog and the owner in order to properly implement training and handling techniques is outstanding. Jeff is an excellent dog trainer and I highly reccomend his services.

We brought a new puppy in to our home with two other dogs, an Aussie and a Lab. From day one they did not take to our new puppy. The lab was highly aggressive to her and also was becoming aggressive towards us. My husband said that was a big NO NO and I needed to get rid of our lab (3 yrs). I cried for a week before deciding maybe he was right - nothing was working and I was scared he would soon land a fatal bite to the puppy. My vet said he wished we had a dog whisperer like like Cesar Millan in our area. In desparation I went online and typed in Dog Whisperer asking God to give me a miracle. He did! I saw Will Thomas' web site and called him. He answered my call that night, spoke to me for over and hour, and we set up an appointment for that weekend. I am amazed at the results. It wasn't necessarily my dogs but me, and how I interacted with them. My husband balked when I first told him about the appointment saying he'd believe it when he saw it. He now believes and tells all our friends the story and change in our dogs. The lab and puppy are now best buddies, I am no longer stressed out and our home is much happier. He made a difference in just a few hours! Of course we had to follow through with the exercises he showed us for a couple weeks and now everything is second nature. -Riverview, FL

I have used Purple Lotus Pet Care for the last few years to take care of my 3 dogs and a cat. She has come to our house to walk the dogs when we had long days at work. She has dog sat for us when we are on vacation. She has even taken the pups to the vet when we could not take them. The dogs are always happy to see her and I love that she will text me and send pictures of them. KV

It doesn't get any better than Gaby! I took my 18 month English Mastiff to her for Boot Camp because her personality didn't fit her body. She was about 140 pounds but scared of her own shadow. If a sprinkler would kick on, she would run away. If someone tried to pet her, the tail would tuck between her legs and head would go down or she would just run away. She used to let our little dog (15 pounds) eat her dog food (ok - sometimes she still does!) She was petrified of visitors and would run to another room with no chance of getting her to come back and meet them. Now I can say with confidence, our lives have been changed, all thanks to Gaby! Today, I had an appointment in my house with someone my dog had never seen before. My dog, let the stranger come in, sit down, and conduct business. This was a FIRST for us. She didn't bark, run away or scare the visitor. She was so calm, that during our meeting, my dog laid down beside my feet and even crossed her paws. That action definitely was a result of Gaby's training. I am50 years old and have had several dogs -my current dog is my third Mastiff - I'm not stupid, I am well read and well trained but in all my years, there has never been anyone like Gaby. She will change your family dynamics, if you let her! I take my baby back to Gaby for boarding and I have to tell you that Puppy might be a bit reluctant to leave my car, once she is out of the car and running with Gaby's dogs, she loves it! I have never had that positive response from any of our pets with any boarding. When I pick Puppy up, she has NEVER had any adjustment issues. It doesn't get any better than Gaby!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

      • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
      • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
      • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
      • What are your different walk routes?
      • When will you pick up and drop off?
      • How will we communicate?
      • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
      • What’s your cancellation policy?
      • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
      • How and how often do I pay you?
      • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

      What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

      What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

      • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
      • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
      • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
      • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
      • Wash and dry: $60
      • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
      • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut
