Great experience! Fast Moves was able to perform a same day move with only a few hours notice and to do it for a very reasonable price. The movers were professional and handled a very large and awkward item with extreme care. I would definitely hire them again.

I had a positive experience with LA Muscle Movers and would rate the moving process a 5 out of 5. However, the two gentlemen who carried out the move were dispatched with a moving truck that had a tire that was steadily losing air throughout the day. They were also not told by their manager that the move would be more complex than initially estimated. I think this was unprofessional and not at all fair to the two movers.

Eric led an outstanding team of movers, and owner Stephen Embrey went the extra mile to help me with my move. A great experience during a stressful time- don't know what I would have done without them! Before going to more expensive movers, call Embrey. They will go all out to do a great job for you.

Great help! I needed some large furniture moved into a storage unit and was having trouble locating reasonably prices movers. Rod and his son moved my items and although I paid more than I wanted to, it was definitely worth it knowing that I did not have to stress about getting it done. Wish I had hired him for my entire move! Thanks Rod!!

First off let me say Excellent movers! The movers arrived on time, they took extra care of my stuff. They were polite, and very professional. The manager Austin moved me before, it’s unfortunate he can’t do moves personally anymore. I didn’t have any problems with them. I would definitely recommend this company!

BayFlower Moving Group made our move across the country so much easier than we expected. The man who came out and appraised the move was very knowledgeable and really helped me save money on my move. I didn't know it at the time, but a move across country involves being charged by the footage, so it was important to throw out all the unneeded items. The appraiser walked through the entire house so we could get as exact a quote as possible. Thanks to the appraiser's advice, after everything was done, we came in under the quote because I knew to throw out anything I didn't really need. That's why I rated Alpha & Omega so high on honesty. Plus, even though I was still in the process of packing, the movers helped me round up the last items and provided extra boxes. They even helped a little with the packing by taping up some boxes and didn't even charge me. That's why I rated BayFlower Moving Group so high on customer service. We flew to Colorado, and we stayed in a hotel a couple days before our furniture arrived. The driver brought the truck around about when BayFlower Moving Group said he would. We were able to talk to the driver on the phone, so we knew when he was coming with our stuff as far as the exact delivery time. The movers were fast and efficient on both departure and arrival moves, and none of our precious antiques were damaged. BayFlower Moving Group contacted me to write this testimonial.

I am always willing to pay a good amount for the quality service. But I never want to waste my money. That is why I never go for the cheaper things. Recently I moved to Memphis, TN from Orlando, FL and the move went really smooth. I would like to give full credit to my moving partner - Sunrise Van Lines. I could have gone for several other cheaper movers but I preferred to go with the reputed one and the trick worked for me. These guys are very organized, they know what they are capable of, they have the knowledge necessary to manage a move and they are willing to give their best. I had many vulnerable items and some heavy and fragile furniture along with many electronic gadgets. They did awesome to wrap, box, load, move and unload all my stuffs. It was great that I did not have to encounter any broken or damaged things. Everything was delivered in one piece and within the schedule. I would definitely recommend Sunrise Van Lines to all my friends.

I was contacted by an agent within minutes of submitting my request for a quote. Not only was their quote the most cost effective, but I feel as if the team that completed my move couldn't have been any more wonderful to work with. My experience was a top notch 10 out of 10 for sure. I will recommend anyone I can their way!

This company is awesome! Starting with Sheila who runs the office. She is very pleasant to deal with and extremely knowledgable with all types of moves and was very helpful. Her estimate was precisely what the move cost, time frame and expense. When the movers arrived we did a quick walk through and they immediately got started. I had a three bedroom house with stairs and a grand piano. This is there specialty and I could see why as they made moving my piano effortless. I was amazed how hard and quickly they worked. It was apparent they were all very experienced and exceptional movers! They were also very friendly and a joy to have preform my move. To my amazement not one single item was damaged in anyway. I could not have been any happier and won't hesitate to use them again! I would recommend this company to anyone!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

      • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
      • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
      • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
      • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
      • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
