We purchased a new home and were painting immediately upon closing so I was under a ton of pressure to get the paint selection to the paint team. The first person I hired did not show up!! Needless to say, I was a "hot mess" and that is when I contacted Susie. She calmed me down, and offered to come the next morning ready to work. I cant say enough about the experience. I am a very conservative person and stick to safe colors. That would have been the wrong decision for this house I just purchased! Fortunately, Susie stuck with me and after about 12 hours she had gently nudged me out of my comfort zone and we had picked the colors for the entire inside of the house. She listened to me to understand my personality and likes/dislikes, looked at my home as a whole unit, and then guided me to pick something that was modern, flows well from room to room, and makes the house feel like MY home. Nothing was ever forced on me. Susie was very good at helping me understand how each color I picked would affect the room and all the surrounding rooms. I was afraid of decorators because I have always felt that they would try to take my home and and make it "theirs".... so in the end it would be what they like and think is great but not what I like. We started the day with tears of stress and ended with tears of joy. I would be more than happy to speak with anyone personally about my experience.. just ask Susie. She knows where to find me as she will be helping me with projects in the future.

Rick has helped us with a TON of projects. We basically completed our kitchen remodel with Rick's assistance. He is on-time, knows his stuff and acts professionally- something we have had a tough time finding here in South Florida. We will be using him some more in the New Year without reservation.

I recently hired Judith Proctor, Eye of the Designer, to redecorate our home. Judy is extremely creative with a great “design eye” and from the moment my husband and I met her we knew she was the one who would transform our house into a home we would be proud of. Judy gets me and she gets my taste. I gave her my favorite color and decor style and she worked with me on all the design details (fabric, furniture, pricing and quality). She listened to my vision of what I wanted so it was very easy for us to come together and decide on the perfect rug, furniture, light fixture, accessories, accent wall material, paint color, etc. Judy took the time to understand my needs, helped to recommend and coordinate all the trades needed, returned all of my calls and emails promptly and did an amazing job of finding unique pieces for our space. Judy used some of our existing pieces and incorporated them into the design pulling our ideas together into a cohesive plan which gave our home a polished, magazine-cover look. She has impeccable taste, an excellent eye for color, and very creative ideas to make any home beautiful and outstanding which is exactly what she has done for our home and provided excellent service all the way through. I can’t thank her enough! Judy is a pleasure to work with and makes the whole experience relaxing and fun. For all your interior design needs, contact Judith Proctor, Eye of the Designer. You will be so glad you did! Marjorie Jackson, Coral Springs, Florida

My wife and I have been living in a 6000 sqft. house without proper window treatments, carpets or “grown up” furniture. Neither one of us really had an appreciation for design, nor what is could do for our home, but we do now! After meeting with us a few times, Mark presented an elegant, but very livable design plan that made our house a home. Also, since Mark is a certified LEED Accredited Professional, he installed LED lighting throughout the house, used no VOC paints, switched to on-demand hot water, automatically programming thermostats, touchless faucets. He also installed carpets and pads that were LEED compliant, they didn’t smell! We now have a house tailored to fit our lives and sustain our health. Beautiful and healthy is a great combination. We love to point out the details to our friends, thermostats that learn. Clean, tailored design that is elegant but not fussy. Our home is part of our family and we love it.

We had an extensive remodeling project underway that quickly became overwhelming. Once Keith became involved, he quickly sorted through the entire project. He was able to oversee everything, select materials and finishes with ease, all the while respecting our desires and incorporating them into an extraordinary result. We are thrilled with the expertise and level of professionalism that Keith has provided. He has definitely made our house a place we want to come home to everyday. Thank you, so much, Keith!!

He is such a hard worker. I had him to replace 5 existing ceiling fans without lights to new ones with lights, and fix the glasses door to the balcony. He encountered difficulties but he never gave up until he made it right. He came to my house at 11 and stayed until almost 8 p.m. My husband and I are very impressed by his effort to make things right, we actually paid him more than he asked. Thank you so much Mr. Luiz! You not only fixed my ceiling fan/glass door, but also showed my three little children the value of hardworking.

Vee knocked it out of the park. Hired Vee to design a home office. From concept to finish she was there every step of the way. The results are amazing, there is no way we could have incorporated so many elements without her guidance, knowledge and great taste. She thinks of every detail and has a wealth of relationships for every aspect including furniture, fabrics, electrical, painting, wall coverings, technology, lighting, carpentry and who knows what else. She sources each item from the best supplier for your needs / tastes, which is much more work but the results are astounding. I would definitely recommend Vee to anyone and will be using her to help with the rest of the house. She's a great find!

Katherine helped me design and renovate a large open bathroom. Throughout the entire process she frequently came up with unique and stylish ideas that pushed me just far enough outside my comfort zone to ensure that the end result would be something fresh, functional, and very stylish. She also knew just where to compromise so that I stayed on budget and on time with contractors. Overall I’d work with Katherine on any design project. I wish I would have had her help Fornino my kitchen!

I highly recommend Eden! Our interior designer Moe did a fantastic job. We were skeptical at first, but after we shared our vision with him, he made it a reality and better. He wasn’t pushy and considerate of our opinions and requests. And when he says it works, BELIEVE HIM because it does! Over all it was a fantastic experience and our home looks great.

Andrea worked with us to decorate/design our completely empty beachfront apartment. That meant selecting everything from furniture to fabrics to painting to a new kitchen backsplash and cabinets. But she didn't stop there-the tile and furniture on our outdoor lanai created an additional (and often favorite) living space. We appreciate that Andrea listened to us and understood exactly what we wanted and then helped us do that within our budget. All this while we were often more than one thousand miles away! Within three months we enjoying our fully furnished space. She has excellent taste and offered ideas and solutions we didn't think of.

My husband and I would EXTREMELY HIGHLY recommend Hatley and Thompson. There AREN'T ENOUGH STARS IN THE SKY TO RATE THEM!!!! We hired Hatley and Thompson for our newly constructed home in Florida while still living up north. Everything was done by email and telephone. We didn't have to spend any money or time to travel to Florida at all during the process. The finished product is breathtaking!! Every room from ceiling to floor and wall to wall is absolutely stunning and beautifully put together. We could never have done this ourselves in several lifetimes. Their expertise and extremely good taste and recommendations are priceless. I would trust them to choose everything but they made sure the home suited our likes and wants and they worked tirelessly with us to achieve this and make it our own. They went above and beyond the scope of interior design. They educated us every step of the way and gave us background on even the smallest details of the project. They even went ahead and helped us eliminate an ant problem that they noticed and educated us on hurricanes, insurance, cleaning products, table coverings and much much more. Finally, they are honest, quality people of extremely high character and we are lucky to have met them and feel as we are now friends! We would use them over and over and over!!!!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
